Flu cases are down in NYC, but health officials say flu season is far from over

Flu Cases in NYC Show Signs of Decline, But Officials Warn Season is Far from Over

In a mixed signal for New York City's flu season, lab-confirmed cases continue to dwindle, with a 43% decrease reported last week compared to the previous week. The city's health department has seen a significant drop in cases, from over 32,000 cases in one week just a month ago to around 2,200.

However, despite this downward trend, health officials are cautioning against complacency. Dr. Toni Eyssallenne, the deputy chief medical officer at the health department, emphasized that flu season is far from over and the virus remains unpredictable. "Flu numbers are heading in the right direction," she noted, "but the virus is still out there, and we can't let our guard down."

The decline in flu cases is a welcome relief after last year's devastating flu season, which saw 289 pediatric deaths reported nationwide – a record number. According to the health department, only 89% of eligible children had received the vaccine, highlighting the ongoing need for increased vaccination efforts.

In addition to flu, the city is also tracking trends in RSV and COVID-19 cases. While RSV rates remain elevated, with over 2,200 lab-confirmed cases reported last week, there has been little decline over the past month. In contrast, COVID-19 levels are low and falling.

To mitigate these ongoing health concerns, city health officials are urging residents to take proactive steps to protect themselves. These include getting vaccinated, staying home when sick, and washing hands regularly – a message that is being echoed by experts nationwide in an effort to keep the public safe during this critical period of the flu season.

πŸ€” I'm kinda glad to hear that flu cases are decreasing in NYC, but at the same time, I'm also super relieved when reading that they're not ignoring the fact that it's still far from over 🚨. 43% less cases last week is def a good sign, but we can't get too comfortable here πŸ˜…. And those numbers for RSV and COVID-19? Not as great πŸ€•. I'm all for taking proactive steps to protect ourselves - vaccination is key πŸ’‰, handwashing is super important 🚿, and staying home when sick doesn't hurt either πŸ›‹οΈ. Can we get a clearer graph with these updates tho? That would make it way more digestible for me πŸ“Š

OMG I'm so relieved to hear that flu cases are finally starting to decline πŸ™Œ, but at the same time I'm super worried that people are getting too comfortable and forgetting to take precautions πŸ€’. Like we know the virus is still out there and can pop up anytime, especially during peak season in March or April πŸ’”. And with RSV and COVID-19 cases still lingering around, it's crucial we don't let our guard down, you know? 🚫 I mean, getting vaccinated is a no-brainer, but what about those of us who are already sick? Staying home and washing our hands regularly might seem old-school, but trust me, it's better than being stuck in the hospital with pneumonia 😷. Let's just keep being responsible and taking care of each other, you feel? πŸ€—

😊 I'm glad to hear that flu cases are on the decline in NYC! 43% less cases last week compared to the previous one, that's a big drop 🀩. I think it's awesome that health officials are being cautious and reminding us not to let our guard down yet πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. It's like they say, "you can't stop flu season" - you gotta keep on fighting! πŸ’ͺ

I'm also loving the focus on RSV and COVID-19 cases, it's like we're finally seeing some breathing room 🌟. Getting vaccinated is still so important, let's all make sure to get our shots and protect ourselves and those around us πŸ’‰. And if you do happen to get sick, staying home and washing your hands is the best way to slow the spread 🚿.

I'm just happy that we're seeing some progress and a little bit of hope on this flu season 😊. Fingers crossed it stays that way! πŸ‘

I'm not sure I buy the 43% decrease in flu cases... sounds like a pretty big drop if you ask me πŸ€”. Where's the data on how many labs have actually been testing? Are they just looking at isolated hotspots or is it a city-wide decline? And what's with the vaccine numbers - 89% of kids got vaccinated, but still had a record number of pediatric deaths last year... doesn't that tell you something about our current vaccination strategy? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

πŸ€” so the flu cases r goin down but still nobody's feelin too good about it, cuz the doc says its not over yet... like, we gotta stay vigilant 🚨 and keep washin our hands, get vaccinated, etc... cant just chill now, even tho its a relief 😊 that the numbers r droppin. RSV is still a problem tho, so gotta keep an eye on that too πŸ‘€

πŸ€’πŸ’‰ So I think it's good news that flu cases are going down, but we shouldnt celebrate just yet πŸŽ‰πŸ˜¬. The thing is, flu seasons can be super unpredictable and one week can totally turn around in a bad way πŸ’₯. I'm glad the health department is being cautious and reminding us to stay vigilant. It's also kinda sad that so many kids didn't get vaccinated last year... πŸ€• 89% isn't great, but at least it's a step up from nothing πŸš€. And omg, RSV cases are still pretty high πŸ€’. I guess we just have to keep on keeping on and washing those hands like our lives depend on it πŸ™πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€’ just a thought... seems like we're making progress with flu cases but i still think its easy for people to let their guard down πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ know when to take care of ourselves and our loved ones, not just wait for numbers to drop πŸ’Š vaccination rates are a good start tho πŸ‘

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s kinda weird how people are feeling relieved that flu cases are going down. Like, yeah, it's good we're not seeing as many cases, but also, let's not forget that flu season can pop up anytime and hit us hard again. And now we're just gonna relax because things seem to be slowing down? I'm all for taking care of ourselves, but I don't wanna see people get complacent. We need to keep getting vaccinated and taking precautions even when it seems like the virus is dying off. πŸ’‰πŸ€’

I'm kinda glad to hear the flu cases are coming down but still super concerned about them not saying we're outta the woods yet πŸ€”πŸ’‰ I mean, 43% decrease is a big drop, but it's like they say, you can't let your guard down or something will come along and mess everything up 😬. And don't even get me started on those low vaccination rates last year, yikes! The city needs to keep pushing for more vaxxers 🀝

πŸ€” oh man i'm kinda relieved that the flu cases are declining but at the same time i don't wanna be too optimistic lol like they're saying we shouldnt let our guard down... 🚨 2,200 new cases in a week is still crazy low tho πŸ‘€ and what's up with RSV rates? shouldn't those be way lower by now πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

πŸ€” I'm not surprised they're still seeing cases coming in, 43% might seem like a drop but those numbers are huge to begin with. And RSV rates are still elevated, it's gonna take more than just flu season to get back on top πŸ‘Š

ill be honest, its kinda weird dat flu cases r goin down in nyc, but every1's still talkin bout how bad last year was πŸ€”. i think we should b grateful it not as bad dis year, but also super careful cuz u never know what's comin' 🚨.

ive been lookin at some charts and its clear dat rsv rates r still pretty high πŸ“Š. i drew a quick diagram to show urself:
```
+---------------+
| RSV Rates |
| (Lab-Confirmed)|
| Elevated |
| (Over 2,200)|
+---------------+
|
| High
v
+---------------+
| COVID-19 |
| Levels |
| Low & Falling|
+---------------+
```
anywayz, i think we should all just be a bit more considerate of each other during flu season πŸ€—. vaccinate, wash ur hands, stay home when u're sick... its not that hard πŸ’ͺ

I think it's kinda unfair on people who got the flu last year πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Like, yeah, 289 pediatric deaths was a tragedy, but shouldn't we be giving a break to those who survived? I mean, 43% decrease in cases is def a good sign, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. Still think we should all just get vaccinated and take precautions, tho 🀝. Don't wanna see anyone else get sick πŸ€’.

I'm thinking, maybe people are just getting better at recognizing the symptoms or something? 43% decrease in cases is a big drop, but I guess we should still be cautious... πŸ€” The fact that RSV rates are still high and not going down is concerning tho 😟. We need to make sure everyone gets vaccinated and takes care of themselves, 'cause you never know when the virus might come back. And what's up with kids not getting enough vaccines? 89% is just not good enough πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. I'm glad COVID-19 levels are low, but we can't let our guard down yet... πŸ’ͺ We need to keep being vigilant and taking care of ourselves.

OMG u guys 2,200 lab confirmed cases of RSV last week? 😱 still really high if u ask me i remember when my little sibling had rsv back in 2020 and it was super scary but at least there's a vaccine now let's hope we can get those kids vaccinated ASAP πŸ’‰πŸ‘Ά NYC is doing a great job keeping flu cases low tho πŸ™Œ only 43% decrease last week compared to the previous one is still progress i guess πŸ‘
