Newborn dies after mother drinks raw milk during pregnancy

A New Mexico baby has died from a bacterial infection contracted through unpasteurized milk consumed by its pregnant mother, according to the state's health department. The mother's drinking raw milk may have led to a severe Listeria infection in her child, which ultimately resulted in the infant's death.

Raw milk has been linked to several serious illnesses, including listeriosis, campylobacteriosis, cryptosporidiosis, e. coli infections, and brucellosis. Pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to these pathogens.

According to health officials, unpasteurized milk can transmit a range of disease-causing germs, including Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, which can cause severe infections in pregnant women and their unborn babies. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that eating unpasteurized milk products increases the risk of listeriosis by 150 times.

The American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists warns patients that newborns infected with Listeria during pregnancy may be born with serious infections, including intellectual disability, paralysis, seizures, blindness, or problems with their brain, kidneys, or heart.

I gotta say, I'm all for individual freedom and stuff, but in this case, I think raw milk is just too much risk for some people πŸ€”. Like, pregnant women and newborns are already super vulnerable to illness, so it's just not worth the gamble. I know some folks might be like "but it's natural, it's good for us" and all that, but honestly, who needs a little extra freedom when there's a chance someone could get seriously sick or even die from eating unpasteurized milk? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ The benefits of raw milk just don't outweigh the risks in my book. Plus, think about all those other illnesses it can give you - campylobacteriosis, cryptosporidiosis... it's like a laundry list of health problems 😬. Pasteurization is like, the best thing since sliced bread when it comes to keeping people healthy.

ugh this is just so sad πŸ€• my heart goes out to the little one and its family cant even imagine losing a child 😭 like what happened in new mexico couldve been avoided if just pasteurized milk was consumed i mean we all know the risks of raw milk but like how many ppl actually do it anyway?! πŸ™„ its not like its hard to find pasteurized milk in stores or anything like why risk it for some kinda "natural" thing?! πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ anyway, my mind is on the baby and the fam rn they must be living nightmare right now πŸ’”

OMG u gotta be careful w/ unpasteurized milk 🀒🚫 I mean, I know some people are all about raw milk & stuff, but honestly, the risks just aren't worth it. My cousin's sister had a kid who died from Listeria or something & it was straight up tragic πŸ’”. And yeah, CDC says unpasteurized milk increases the risk of listeriosis by 150 times 🀯! So many people get seriously sick or even die from eating that stuff. I'm not gonna lie, I've had some friends who were like "oh, I only drink raw milk" but then they get sick & it's all over social media πŸ˜‚. No joke, pregnant women & newborns are super vulnerable to these pathogens. We should be so careful about what we put in our bodies 🀝

I don’t usually comment but... the news about this New Mexico baby is really scary πŸ€•. I mean, who would have thought that drinking raw milk can be so deadly? It's crazy how these bacteria can just hide in the milk and cause such severe infections. Pregnant women are already super vulnerable to all sorts of things during their pregnancy, but this is just insane. 150 times more risk of listeriosis from unpasteurized milk? That's a lot! And what about the babies who get infected? It's like, they're not even born yet and they're already at risk for so many serious problems 🀯. I don't know how people can just drink raw milk without thinking about all these risks... it's just not worth it πŸ˜‚

omg u guys this is soooo sad!! 😱 a baby's life cut short cuz of something we can prevent like pasteurizing milk 🀯 it's just not fair to the mom either who thought she was doing what was best for her child but in reality she put them in danger πŸ’” we gotta be careful what we drink, especially if we're pregnant or immunocompromised πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ 150 times more likely to get sick from unpasteurized milk? that's crazy! πŸ’€ and those health issues can be so severe too... intellectual disability, paralysis, seizures... it's all just too much πŸ’” i'm just glad the health department is spreading awareness about this and hopefully ppl will take it seriously πŸ™

πŸ€• just saw this thread about a baby in NM who died from raw milk... and I'm still trying to process it πŸ˜”. It's so crazy how one mom's decision to drink unpasteurized milk can put her entire family at risk 🀯. I mean, I get that some people might think raw milk is healthy or whatever, but the risks are just not worth it πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ. Pregnant women and newborns are already vulnerable enough without having to deal with these kinds of super serious health issues πŸ’”. And the fact that it's so preventable by just pasteurizing the milk makes me wanna scream 😩. I wish more people would educate themselves on the risks associated with raw milk πŸ€“. Anyway, RIP to the little one who didn't get a chance to live a full life πŸ’•.

πŸ€• this is so sad πŸ™ i'm all for supporting local dairy farmers and the whole 'grass is greener' thing but come on... raw milk is literally a death wish πŸ’€ especially for pregnant women and newborns. i mean, we know it's got some benefits or whatever but is it really worth the risk of getting sick to death 🀯 like that one baby in new mexico who sadly lost its life... it just doesn't seem worth it to me πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

Man I'm just so relieved no one in my family drinks raw milk πŸ™. That's just crazy stuff. It makes me glad we have pasteurized milk here in the US πŸ˜‚. And yeah I can see why pregnant women should be extra careful with what they drink, you never know what's gonna happen to their unborn kids πŸ€°β€β™€οΈ. 150 times riskier from unpasteurized milk? That's wild πŸ’₯. It just goes to show how important it is for farmers to follow safety guidelines and for people to educate themselves about the risks. I feel bad for that poor baby who passed away, it's heartbreaking πŸ˜”.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one πŸ€”. I mean, I get it, unpasteurized milk is a risk, but 150 times the risk of listeriosis? That sounds like a pretty big number to me πŸ“Š. Where's the source on that exact figure? Is it from some study or CDC report that I haven't seen? Also, what's with the emphasis on newborns being born with serious infections? Can we get some real data on how many cases of listeriosis in babies actually result in those specific outcomes? I'm not trying to be a skeptic (lol), I just want to make sure we're talking about facts here πŸ’‘.

πŸ˜• this is just so sad... a baby's life lost to something that could've been avoided πŸ€• raw milk can be really bad news, especially for pregnant women and newborns. it's crazy how much risk there is - 150 times more risk of listeriosis from unpasteurized milk than regular pasteurized stuff! 🀯 the CDC is right to warn people about this, and I just wish more mums knew about it too... πŸ˜”

πŸ˜” this is just so sad about the little baby who passed away due to a bacterial infection from raw milk... it's crazy how something as simple as drinking unpasteurized milk can lead to such severe consequences. i mean, we know that listeria and other bacteria are super bad news for pregnant women and newborns, but still... πŸ€• shouldn't we be able to just enjoy our milk without worrying about getting sick? πŸ₯› the stats from the CDC are crazy - 150 times more risk of listeriosis just because we drink raw milk is just not worth it. πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ

Ugh 😷 I'm so worried about the mom and her baby... raw milk just isn't worth it, you know? πŸ€• I've seen some friends who drink raw milk all the time, but they always get sick anyway. Like, why take that risk? πŸ™„ It's just not fair to your child. I think we need to be more aware of the risks and educate people about the dangers of unpasteurized milk. πŸ€“ And what really gets me is that this happened because someone thought raw milk was a good idea... πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ Like, have they even heard of pasteurization? πŸ˜‚ It's just common sense, you know? We need to protect our babies and make sure they're safe and healthy. πŸ’•

I'm like totally shocked by this 🀯 news! Raw milk is just not worth the risk, you know? I mean, think about it - those tiny little babies can't even defend themselves against something as small as a bacterial infection. And the worst part is that this mom might've been trying to be all "natural" and health-conscious, but really she was putting her baby's life in danger πŸ’”. The CDC stats are wild, though - 150 times more risk of listeriosis from eating unpasteurized milk? That's like, a whole different level of crazy 😲. And what really gets me is that pregnant women and newborns are basically sitting ducks for these pathogens. It's just not worth the gamble, you feel?

OMG 🀯 I'm literally shaking thinking about this! Raw milk is not worth the risk, you know? My cousin used to drink it all the time and now she's super paranoid about getting sick. Pregnant women, especially, need to be super careful what they eat. Like, have you seen those commercials where they show people drinking raw milk and then suddenly being like 'oh no I'm so sick'? That's real life right there 🀒. And it's not just Listeria, either - all those other diseases can happen too. We need to keep pushing for pasteurization, you know? My aunt had a friend who used to sell raw milk at this one place and now she's all out of business. I guess that's what happens when you're reckless with people's health πŸ’”
