Trump-led abuses amid 'democratic recession' put human rights in peril, HRW report says

The global human rights landscape is facing an unprecedented threat as almost three-quarters of the world's population lives under autocratic rule, levels not seen since the 1980s. The situation has been described as a "democratic recession" where key pillars of democracy are being eroded, and human rights are in peril.

US President Donald Trump has been instrumental in this trend, carrying out a broad assault on American democracy and the global rules-based international order. His administration's actions have undermined trust in elections, reduced government accountability, attacked judicial independence, and defied court orders, among other abuses.

HRW executive director Philippe Bolopion warned that every day brings new confirmation of this trend, but when viewed from a broader perspective, it becomes clear that there is an organized, relentless, and determined assault on checks and balances designed to limit executive power in US democracy. The situation has become so dire that Trump has boasted about not needing international law as a constraint, instead relying on his "own morality."

The report highlights the UK's role in this crisis, where the Labour government's punitive approach to immigration had emboldened far-right rhetoric and undermined the right to protest. Bolopion also warned that anti-migrant rhetoric is a growing danger for human rights not just in the UK but also in France, Germany, and other European countries.

The global situation has become a "perfect storm" for human rights, with 72% of the world's population living under autocracy. The undermining of the rules-based order by Russia and China has created an environment where human rights defenders are working tirelessly to advance norms and protect freedoms.

HRW is calling on democracies, including the UK, European Union, and Canada, to form a strategic alliance to preserve the international order and counter policies that have undermined multilateral trade governance and human rights. Bolopion emphasized that such an alliance could become a powerful force and substantial economic bloc, offering incentives to counter negative trends.

In this challenging time, civil society is crucial in promoting human rights and freedoms. While there are dangers ahead, Bolopion remains hopeful, citing public protests across the globe as evidence of people's determination to fight for their rights and freedoms.

I'm gettin' so tired of all these authoritarian regimes poppin' up everywhere πŸ€―πŸ‘Ž. It's like we're losin' sight of what democracy is all about, ya know? The whole thing with Trump's administration is super worrying - it feels like they're just takin' a big ol' sledgehammer to the system and expectin' everything to magically fix itself πŸ’”.

And don't even get me started on the UK's role in this mess πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§. All that punitive immigration stuff just fuels the fire of far-right rhetoric, man... it's like we're more concerned with tearin' people down than buildin' 'em up πŸ”₯.

I wish there was a way to put a stop to all this, you know? It feels like we need a global coalition or somethin' 🀝. But for real, though - can't we just get some respect for human rights already?! 😩

πŸ€• The state of human rights globally is super worrying 🌎. I think it's crazy how much power the US has right now, especially under Trump 🀯. It feels like democracy is being slowly dismantled πŸ’”. The fact that almost 3/4 of the world lives in autocracy is just insane 😲.

I'm also really concerned about the UK's role in this πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§. Their policies on immigration have been super divisive and it's affecting protests and human rights πŸ‘Š. But I do love that HRW is trying to bring democracies together to fight for human rights 🀝.

It's scary to think that 72% of the world lives under autocracy 😡, but at the same time, public protests show us that people won't give up on their rights and freedoms πŸ’ͺ. We need more alliances like this to counter negative trends and protect multilateral trade governance 🌈. Fingers crossed for a better future 🀞

πŸ€• I'm getting really worried about what's happening with democracy around the world. It seems like we're losing our grip on human rights and it's all because of some leaders who don't care about the future of our planet 🌎. I mean, Trump is a huge example of this - his actions are like, totally undermining everything that democracy is supposed to stand for 😩. And now with Russia and China leading the charge against the international order, it's like we're stuck in some kind of global nightmare 😳. I'm not sure what the solution is, but I do know that we need to support each other as a global community and work towards creating a more just and equitable world 🌈. And I think civil society is exactly where it should be - on the front lines fighting for human rights and freedoms πŸ’ͺ. We can't give up hope just yet! πŸ’•

I don’t usually comment but I’m really worried about what’s going on with democracy around the world πŸ€•. It feels like we’re losing so much ground in terms of human rights and protections. The idea that almost three-quarters of the population is living under autocratic rule is just shocking 😱. And it’s not just the US, other countries are struggling too.

I think what bothers me most is that this isn’t a partisan issue, it affects everyone 🌎. We need to work together as democracies to protect our values and human rights. I love how HRW is pushing for an alliance between countries to counter negative trends πŸ’ͺ. It’s so true that civil society is crucial in promoting change.

I don’t know what the future holds but I do know that we can’t give up hope 🌟. Those public protests around the world are a great reminder of people’s determination to fight for their rights and freedoms. We just need to keep pushing forward and supporting each other πŸ’•.

omg, this is really concerning 🀯... i mean, i was just starting to think that democracy was safe πŸ™, but it seems like we're living in a scary time where ppl r being oppressed and human rights r being ignored 😒. usa is setting an example for other countries with trump's actions πŸ‘Ž, like how he's undermining trust in elections and attacking judicial independence 🀯. and it's not just the usa, uk and europe are also dealing w/ this issue πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

i think it's super important for democracies to form a strategic alliance to counter these negative trends πŸ’ͺ... and civil society is so crucial in promoting human rights and freedoms 🌎. but at the same time, i'm also hopeful cuz ppl r still protesting and fighting for their rights 🌟. we just need more awareness and action πŸ“’πŸ’₯.

I'm really worried about what's happening with democracy around the world πŸ€•. It feels like we're losing our way on human rights and it's scary to think that so many people are living under autocratic rule 😬. The fact that Trump is basically flaunting his disregard for international law and norms is just appalling 🚫. We need more leaders who understand the importance of checks and balances in protecting individual freedoms.

I'm also concerned about the rise of anti-migrant rhetoric, it's a ticking time bomb 🎯. If we don't stand up to these toxic ideologies, they'll spread like wildfire and destroy our communities. We need to support human rights defenders and civil society who are bravely fighting for what's right πŸ’ͺ.

Let's hope that the UK, EU, and other democracies can come together to form an alliance to counter this trend 🀝. We need to preserve our international order and protect multilateral trade governance, it's not just about human rights, it's about our economic future πŸ’Έ.

πŸ€” Honestly, I'm not surprised by this "democratic recession". It feels like we're just now waking up to how fragile our systems are 🚧. Trump's antics are a symptom of a deeper issue – a lack of critical thinking among politicians who think they can just disregard international law and norms πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ. The fact that 72% of the world's population lives under autocracy is terrifying, but it also makes me hopeful 🌟. If we, as individuals, are willing to speak out and take action (and not just on social media), maybe we can create a counter-trend πŸ’ͺ. Governments need to listen to civil society and work together to preserve the rules-based order πŸ“œ. It's time for a strategic alliance of democracies to form and show that we're serious about protecting human rights 🌎πŸ’₯

OMG you guys I'm literally so worried about our world right now πŸ€• like 72% of the population living under autocracy is crazy talk! And Trump is like a supervillain or something, always trying to undermine democracy and human rights πŸš«πŸ’”

I know some people are all like "oh but we have checks and balances" and stuff, but honestly I think it's getting harder to see that even in countries with democratic systems πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. And what really scares me is the rise of far-right rhetoric everywhere... like, can't we just get along?! 🀞

I'm all for a strategic alliance between democracies to counter these negative trends though πŸ’ͺ, and I love how HRW is calling out Trump's admin for their shenanigans πŸ‘Š. But at the same time, it's not all doom and gloom... I mean, have you seen those public protests around the world? πŸŒŽπŸ’– people are fighting for their rights and freedoms, and that gives me hope 🌟
