The Grateful Dead's Stellar 1976 Boston Show Hits Vinyl on Record Store Day
Record Store Day has unveiled its annual release list, featuring over 350 titles across various genres and artists. Among the gems is a live album from the legendary band Grateful Dead, captured at their iconic show in Boston Music Hall on June 11, 1976.
This new release marks the fifth show of the band's comeback tour that year, where they were firing on all cylinders. The setlist spans classics like "Scarlet Begonias" and "Brown-Eyed Women," as well as newer material and reworked arrangements of their early hits. This iteration, with the return of drummer Mickey Hart, is considered one of the most powerful and precise versions of the band to date.
The album was mastered by Jeffrey Norman and produced by David Lemieux, the band's archivist. A limited edition of 7,600 copies has been pressed on 180-gram vinyl, featuring tape restoration and speed correction. The new iteration is a testament to the Dead's renewed focus on their vocals, which have never sounded as great as they did in June 1976.
Record Store Day takes place on April 18 this year, with Bruno Mars serving as ambassador. This release comes ahead of the band's first Record Store Day releases following guitarist Bob Weir's passing last month. The Grateful Dead will also release their collaboration with Dogfish Brewery, On The Back Porch Vol. 3.
The Boston Music Hall live album has been divided into five LPs and features an impressive setlist that showcases the band's range and versatility during this pivotal period in their comeback tour.
