Colorado funeral home owner sentenced to 40 years for abusing 189 bodies

Colorado Funeral Home Owner Sentenced to 40 Years for Abusing 189 Bodies

A shocking case of corporate greed and abuse has come to a head in Colorado, as a funeral home owner was sentenced to 40 years in state prison for stashing 189 decomposing bodies in a building over four years. The crimes were committed by Jon Hallford, the co-owner of the Return to Nature Funeral Home, who gave grieving families fake ashes and charged them exorbitant fees.

The case drew emotional testimony from family members of the deceased, who described how they had been subjected to nightmares, guilt, and grief as a result of their loved ones' bodies being treated with such disregard. "I'm a daughter whose mother was treated like yesterday's trash and dumped in a site left to rot with hundreds of others," one family member, Kelly Mackeen, said during the sentencing hearing.

The Hallfords' motives for the abuse were allegedly driven by greed, as they spent lavishly on luxury items while profiting from their victims. The couple was found guilty of nearly 200 counts of corpse abuse and pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges after cheating the government out of nearly $900,000 in pandemic-era small business aid.

During the investigation, authorities discovered that the Hallfords had stored bodies at room temperature, stacked on top of each other, with swarms of bugs and decomposition fluid covering the floors. The remains were identified through fingerprints, DNA, and other methods, but many families received fake ashes instead.

The sentencing marks a significant shift in Colorado's lax funeral home regulations, which have been tightened by new legislation passed in May 2024. The bill gives regulators greater enforcement power over funeral homes and requires routine inspections of facilities after one shuts down.

Jon Hallford apologized during the sentencing hearing, saying he would regret his actions for the rest of his life. His former wife, Carie Hallford, who also co-owned the Return to Nature Funeral Home, faces a separate sentence of 25-35 years in prison and is set to be sentenced on April 24.

The case has sparked outrage among family members and community leaders, who have called for greater accountability and regulation of the funeral industry. As one of the victims' families said, "My mother's remains were treated like yesterday's trash... I ask God every day for grace."

Ugh ๐Ÿ˜ฉ this is just so wrong - you'd think people would be able to trust their loved ones when they pass away, and these folks just took advantage of that trust for cash ๐Ÿ’ธ. 40 years in prison is still too lenient if you ask me ๐Ÿค”. I'm glad some of the regulations are getting tightened up though ๐Ÿ‘ now funeral homes have to answer to someone who actually cares about keeping families safe ๐Ÿ’•. It's disgusting what these Hallfords did, it's just common decency and human respect... any self-respecting business should treat their customers with dignity and compassion ๐Ÿ™.

Man, this is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿค•. The thought of those 189 bodies being stored like that is just disgusting ๐Ÿšฎ. And to think they were giving fake ashes to grieving families and charging them an arm and a leg ๐Ÿ’ธ? It's no wonder the family members are still dealing with nightmares and guilt ๐Ÿ˜ฉ.

I feel bad for the victims' families who got scammed out of nearly $900k in pandemic aid ๐Ÿค‘. And the fact that it took this long to catch these guys speaks volumes about the lack of regulation in the funeral industry ๐Ÿ’ฅ. But at least now there's a shift towards tightening up those regulations, so maybe we can prevent something like this from happening again ๐Ÿ™.

It's crazy how some people can be so greedy and put profits over human dignity ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿšซ. Jon Hallford apologizing for his actions is a good start, but I hope he spends most of that 40-year sentence reflecting on what he did ๐Ÿ˜”.

this is just disgusting I cant even imagine how many nightmares those family members had to go through after finding out what happened to their loved ones it sounds like a really dark and twisted game of greed vs humanity 40 years is way too short for someone who literally treated human bodies like trash and profited off them meanwhile they're living their best lives now

๐Ÿคฏ just can't believe what some people will do ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ to make a buck... 40 years is way too much time but i guess it's better than nothing ๐Ÿคž. the diagram of their crimes would be a massive, festering corpse with hundreds of maggots crawling all over it - that'd show them ๐Ÿœ๐Ÿ‘Ž. and what really gets me is how greedy they were, spending thousands on luxuries while profiting from people's grief ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ˜ก. the new laws should have caught them sooner, though ๐Ÿ™„. anyway, hope the victims' families can finally find some closure ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ๐Ÿ’”.

Man, this is a total scandal ๐Ÿšฎ๐Ÿ‘Ž. It's unacceptable that Jon Hallford thought he could just dump 189 bodies in a building and get away with it. I mean, what kind of greed drives someone to treat human remains like trash? ๐Ÿคฏ The fact that they spent thousands on luxury items while the families were left with fake ashes is just disgusting.

This case highlights the need for stricter regulations in the funeral industry. It's not too much to ask for some basic decency and respect for the dead, right? ๐Ÿ™ I'm glad Colorado took action by passing new legislation to tighten up those lax regulations. But we can't just stop at one state โ€“ this is a national issue that needs to be addressed.

The fact that the Hallfords thought they could cheat the government out of pandemic-era small business aid and get away with it? That's just outrageous ๐Ÿ˜’. And now, Kelly Mackeen's family has to deal with the aftermath of being treated like yesterday's trash. No wonder they're still dealing with nightmares and guilt.

This case is a wake-up call for all of us. We need to stand up against corporate greed and demand better. It's time for some real change in the funeral industry, not just lip service ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ.

Ugh, this is so messed up ๐Ÿคข... you know what's even worse? Those fancy coffee shops that serve those weird iced lattes with the microfoam on top... I swear, it's like they're trying to make a latte art out of the money people pay for those drinks ๐Ÿ˜‚. And have you ever noticed how some places put those 'artisanal' labels on their food and stuff? Like, dude, if I work hard enough, I can put an 'artisanal' label on my own homemade granola... ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐Ÿคฏ just saw this and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it 40 years is a looong time, but I guess you gotta make an example out of someone who thought they could get away with abusing bodies like that ๐Ÿšฎ. It's crazy how greedy can cloud your judgment, especially when it comes to people's loved ones. The fact that they were living large while their victims' families were suffering is just sickening ๐Ÿ’ธ. I'm all for tough laws and regulations, but it's also sad that this kind of thing had to happen in the first place ๐Ÿค•. Does anyone know how many funeral homes in Colorado are still operating with lax regulations? We should be keeping an eye on that ๐Ÿ‘€.

I just saw this crazy movie with my friend last week ๐Ÿฟ, it was about a guy who got lost in the woods and had to survive with nothing but his wits. It totally blew my mind how he managed to start a fire and find food without any tools. I was like "how does that even work?" ๐Ÿ˜‚ I guess it's all about being resourceful and using your imagination. Anyway, back to this funeral home case... 40 years in prison seems way too harsh for the guy, don't you think? I mean, he made some really bad decisions, but did he really deserve to rot in jail like that ๐Ÿค”

Ugh I'm still shook ๐Ÿ˜ฑ by this whole thing! 40 yrs is way too long imo. Can't believe some ppl will do this to grieving fams just 4 the sake of $$$ ๐Ÿ’ธ. And what's even more crazy is that these ppl thought they could get away w/cheating the gov outta almost a mil ๐Ÿค‘ in pandemic aid?! That's just wrong, you feel? The fact that the mom's remains were treated like trash and left 2 rot 4 years is just sickening ๐Ÿ˜ท. I'm all 4 stricter reg's on the funeral home industry now. Can't let ppl take advantage of ppl in such a horrific way ๐Ÿ’”

omg ๐Ÿ˜ฑ this is so messed up can u even imagine having 189 bodies just rotting away in a building? it's like they didn't care that people's loved ones were still alive out there grieving ๐Ÿคฏ and the worst part is the greed, like come on guys who do that to people for money? ๐Ÿ’ธ 40 years is way too long, imo, but i guess justice can be hard to get sometimes. what's crazy is how lax funeral home regulations used to be in Colorado, now they've changed that with new laws ๐Ÿ‘ hopefully more accountability and less of this stuff will happen again ๐Ÿคž

Ugh what can you even say about this dude Jon Hallford ๐Ÿ˜ฑ he's literally sent 189 people to an early grave and now he's just going to rot in prison for 40 years? Like, the families are still dealing with trauma and grief from these losses and he gets to live out his life behind bars. And to think he was profiting off of them too... it's sickening. I feel bad for Carie Hallford getting a separate sentence, but at least she won't be serving as much time as Jon did. It's crazy how lax the regulations were in Colorado and now they're finally getting some new laws passed to prevent this kind of thing from happening again. At least justice is being served, even if it's long overdue ๐Ÿ‘Ž

Ugh ๐Ÿคฏ, can't believe these two are getting away with this kinda stuff ๐Ÿ˜‚. Like, 40 years in prison is probably not enough considering all the lives they ruined and families affected ๐ŸŒŽ. I mean, who does that? storing bodies like trash on top of each other? ๐Ÿšฎ It's disgusting ๐Ÿ’€. And the greed part? Like, come on! Cheating the government out of $900k for pandemic aid? ๐Ÿคฅ That's just cruel ๐Ÿ˜ข. The whole system needs a major overhaul ๐Ÿ‘Š. These new regulations in May 2024 are a good start, but we need to see more ๐Ÿ’ช. And what about the victims' families? They deserve so much more than a half-hearted apology ๐Ÿ™.

omg this is soooo sad!!! ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜ฑ 40 yrs is way too much but i guess the law has to be strict about these kinda thingz. u feel? the thought of all those ppl dying and being treated like trash is just... *shudders* i cant even imagine how the fam members felt ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ‘€ the hallfords' greed was just insane tho ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ˜’ they shouldve been shut down for good when they were still alive lol. anyway, im glad the new legislation is in place to protect ppl from this kinda abuse ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’ฏ

OMG this is just insane ๐Ÿคฏ! I mean, I've heard of some shady funeral homes before, but this takes the cake. The fact that they're getting away with storing bodies in a state of decomposition and scamming grieving families out of their hard-earned cash is just disgusting ๐Ÿ˜ท. And to think they were doing it all for the sake of luxury shopping and getting rich quick ๐Ÿ’ธ - what's wrong with people?! ๐Ÿ™„

I do have to give props to the authorities for finally taking action and shutting down the place, but I wish this wouldn't have had to come to such a dramatic and disturbing conclusion. The families who were affected by this are still dealing with trauma and grief, and it's just not right that they're having to relive those feelings all over again ๐Ÿค•.

It's also interesting to see how this case has sparked some much-needed change in Colorado's funeral home regulations ๐Ÿ˜Š. Maybe this will be a wake-up call for the industry as a whole - we need more accountability and transparency, especially when it comes to something as sacred as death ๐ŸŒน. Fingers crossed that we'll start seeing some real reform and better practices in the future ๐Ÿ’ช

man this is just heartbreaking the way those people were treated its like they forgot that those bodies belonged to human beings with loved ones who still care about them ๐Ÿ˜” 40 years might seem like a lot but it's probably not enough considering how hurtful and dehumanizing it was for those families to deal with. i hope the new legislation helps bring more transparency and accountability to the funeral industry because clearly some people just don't get it ๐Ÿ’€

๐Ÿ˜ฑ This case is a total fail of corporate America ๐Ÿคฎ. The fact that Jon Hallford was able to go four years without anyone noticing 189 bodies stacked up in his funeral home is just mind-boggling. It raises so many questions about how lax our laws are when it comes to regulating the funeral industry. I mean, who lets a couple run a funeral home like that? ๐Ÿค‘ It's clear that greed and corruption led to this abuse of innocent people, and now we're paying the price with stricter regulations. ๐Ÿ’ช The new legislation passed in May 2024 is just a band-aid on a much deeper problem. We need to start asking some tough questions about how our laws allow this kind of exploitation to happen. Can't we do better? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

omg this is just so sick ๐Ÿคฏ, 40 yrs is way too lenient if u ask me ๐Ÿ˜ก, these ppl deserve life in prison or worse considering what they did to those poor families ๐Ÿ™, funeral homes r supposed to be providing care & respect not exploiting grieving people for cash ๐Ÿ’ธ, and the greed ๐Ÿค‘ of these Hallfords is just mind blowing ๐Ÿ‘€, all that money & luxury items while leaving bodies 2 rot like trash ๐Ÿšฎ, no wonder they got caught ๐Ÿ˜‚, new legislation in CO is a good start but we need more ๐Ÿ’ช, family members deserve justice not fake ashes or empty promises ๐Ÿ’”
