A New Mural Will Commemorate Boyz II Men's Legacy in South Philly
Boyz II Men, the iconic R&B group behind hits like "Motownphilly" and "End of the Road," are set to get a permanent tribute in their hometown of Philadelphia. A new mural is on the way, courtesy of Mural Arts, which aims to capture the group's enduring impact on the city's musical landscape.
The mural, scheduled for a June dedication, will be painted near the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) at 1122 Broad St., where many of the group's members met and honed their craft. The project is part of Mural Arts' broader plans to celebrate Philly's musical heritage, as well as milestones in its semiquincentennial.
The nonprofit is now searching for an artist to bring the mural to life, with a goal of showcasing the group's diverse career and legacy. While there are no strict requirements, Mural Arts hopes that the final product will demonstrate Boyz II Men's place in Philadelphia's rich musical history.
The group's journey began in 1991 with the release of their multi-platinum debut album "Cooleyhighharmony." The album's title referenced a real Chicago school, but the members honored their roots with the single "Motownphilly," which hit No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Over the years, Boyz II Men has undergone some lineup changes, with original member Michael McCary leaving the group in 2003 due to health reasons.
The mural will be a welcome addition to South Philly's cultural landscape, joining the group's existing "Boyz II Men Boulevard" β a stretch of road named after them. With this new tribute, Boyz II Men will become an integral part of Philadelphia's visual and musical identity, cementing their status as hometown heroes.
