Detroit's Iconic Majestic Theatre and Garden Bowl Mourns Loss of 'Papa Joe' Zainea, A True Community Leader

At the age of 92, Joseph John Zainea, affectionately known as "Papa Joe" to his customers and staff, has left an indelible mark on the city's entertainment and culinary scene. As a longtime steward of the Majestic Theatre Center and Garden Bowl, Zainea played a pivotal role in shaping Detroit's vibrant cultural landscape over the past several decades.

Born on January 4, 1934, Zainea's legacy began to take shape when he purchased the historic Garden Bowl building in 1984. Under his guidance, the beloved bowling alley transformed into a gathering place for generations of Detroiters, fostering a sense of community that extends far beyond the lanes. As the business grew, so did its reputation, becoming one of the nation's longest continuously operating bowling alleys.

However, Zainea's vision went beyond mere nostalgia; it was also rooted in innovation and progress. He expertly expanded the Garden Bowl into what is now known as the Majestic Theatre Center, a thriving complex of venues and restaurants that has become synonymous with Detroit's vibrant arts scene. From hosting local and touring musical acts across multiple genres to offering a welcoming space for community events, Zainea's hands-on approach ensured that his business remained an anchor in its neighborhood.

Zainea's commitment to putting people first was exemplified during the 1967 Detroit uprising, when he opened the Garden Bowl as a haven for law enforcement officers, firefighters, National Guard members, and others seeking refuge and sustenance. This selfless act embodies the very essence of Zainea's character – one that prioritized community service over profit.

Beyond his impressive business achievements, Zainea was an active advocate for civic and nonprofit causes. In 2008, he received a lifetime achievement award from Preservation Wayne for his tireless efforts in preserving Detroit's cultural heritage. He also served on the board of The Children's Center of Wayne County, supporting vital mental and behavioral health services for children and families.

As the news of Zainea's passing resonates throughout the city, his loved ones are left to cherish memories of a life well-lived. With a wife of 68 years, Mary, by his side, Joseph John Zainea is survived by their three children, Leane, David, Kathryn, and Joe, as well as two grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on February 11 at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Detroit, followed by burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. As the community comes together to mourn the loss of a true Detroit icon, Zainea's enduring legacy serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to putting people first – a principle that will continue to inspire generations to come.

🌱💕 just saw the news about Papa Joe Zainea and I gotta say... he was literally the heartbeat of Detroit's community! 92 yrs old is still young when you're living life like that 🤩 his dedication to creating a space where people from all walks of life can come together & feel welcome is something we could all learn from 🌈

I mean, who else gets to say they helped create one of the longest-running bowling alleys in the US? 🎳 or that they were a haven for law enforcement officers during a time of unrest? 🕊️ his legacy goes way beyond just running a business - it's about building bridges & fostering connections between people

I'm sending all my love to his family & loved ones right now... he may be gone but his impact on the city will never be forgotten 💗

the thing is I'm not really sure why everyone's making such a big deal about 'papa joe'. don't get me wrong, the guy was super dedicated to his community and all that jazz 🤷‍♂️. but at 92, he lived a pretty full life and accomplished so much. i mean, who needs that many awards and accolades when you've got a community that's genuinely thankful for your service? maybe we're just projecting too much onto someone who was always about keeping it real 🤑.

man this guy "papa joe" zainea was literally a community leader thru and thru 🙏 92 years young and still makin moves all those years he had the garden bowl goin on but he didn't just stop at bowling it was a whole vibe 50s diner, live music, and people from all walks of life comin together what's even more admirable is how he put people over profits especially during that tough time in detroit history 1967 uprising he gave his space to the cops firefighters and others who needed a break he deserved a lifetime achievement award for that alone but it's not just about him it's about all the orgs and causes he supported 2008 preservation wayne and the children's center of wayne county he left a mark on detroit that'll be remembered for generations

🤝 just learned about Papa Joe Zainea... man he was like the heart and soul of Detroit's entertainment scene 92 years old but still going strong all those years he did so much for the community from the Garden Bowl to the Majestic Theatre Center he was the real deal 🎥 his legacy will live on and I'm sure there are a lot of people who are gonna miss him 💔

🙏 You know what really gets me about this story? It's not just about some guy who had an amazing run with the Garden Bowl, but it's also about how he put community above all else. Like, can you imagine if more people prioritized serving others over making a quick buck? 🤑 We could solve so many problems if we just took a page out of 'Papa Joe's' book and focused on building bridges instead of walls.

I think this is like, a super valuable lesson for us all to learn. We get caught up in our own little worlds and forget that everyone else has needs too 🌎. Zainea's story shows us that when we put people first, amazing things can happen – not just for the individual, but for the entire community. So let's take a page out of 'Papa Joe's' playbook and start serving others more often. Trust me, it'll make all the difference 💖

Papa Joe Zainea was definitely ahead of his time 🙏. The way he turned the Garden Bowl into this vibrant community hub is really inspiring. I mean, who else would've thought to create a space where law enforcement and firefighters could find refuge? 🤝 His commitment to people over profit is something we should all strive for. And let's not forget about his legacy in preserving Detroit's cultural heritage - that's some serious work 💪. Yeah, he might not be with us anymore, but his impact on the city will live on for a long time 🌟.

🤔 92 is old, but I think it's crazy how one person can keep making a difference in the community for so long... like 68 years with Mary! 🚶‍♀️ That's love & dedication right there. Zainea might be gone but his mark on Detroit won't fade away. I mean, who needs more bowling alleys when you have places that bring people together? It's nice to see someone care about the community so much... even if they're not a politician 🤷‍♂️

omg u gotta feel 4 papa joe 🤯 he was literally da heart of detroit 4eva! i mean, 92 is old age in any culture but this guy still managed 2 bring ppl together thru his garden bowl & majestic theatre center... talk about a community leader 💖 what i love most abt him is that he put ppl over profits 1000% u can tell he was all about spreadin positivity & bringin good vibes 2 da city 🌈 RIP papa joe we'll miss u but ur legacy will live on in our hearts ❤️

🤕 Another community leader gone too soon, another opportunity for the city to put up a commemorative plaque and pretend like they actually care about their history 📸. I mean, it's great that he was a good guy and all, but let's not get too sentimental here – he was only 92, which is practically ancient in today's fast-paced world ⏱️. And what's with the "Papa Joe" nickname? Sounds like something out of a bad Hallmark movie 🎬. Still, I guess it's nice that his loved ones have each other to grieve... but I'm sure they'll just end up fighting over who gets to control the family business now 😂.

just had breakfast at this old diner near my place and saw an ad for garden bowl's 40th anniversary party 🍴🎉 its crazy to think how much the garden bowl has changed over the years, from being just a bowling alley to becoming a whole complex with restaurants and venues. kinda makes me nostalgic for when papa joe used to run the place 🌟 i remember people talking about him as this iconic figure who brought everyone together 🤗 anyways, sad news about his passing but it's awesome that he lived an amazing life doing something he loved ❤️

omg sorry to hear about papa joe 🤕 i had no idea he was that old like 92 lol what's the deal with bowling anyway? how did it become such an institution in detroit? and omg what a cool thing he did during the uprising can you imagine being able to just open up your business as a safe space for cops and firefighters? 🤝

😔🎬 The sad news about "Papa Joe" Zainea is really hitting home 🤕. I mean, the man was a total legend when it comes to Detroit's entertainment and food scene 🍴. He had this amazing vision of turning the Garden Bowl into a community hub, which not only kept people entertained but also brought them together 💕. And let's not forget his selfless act during the 1967 uprising – it's just so impressive that he opened up the bowling alley as a safe space for law enforcement and others 🙏.

It's crazy to think about how much impact one person can have on their community 🤯. Zainea was all about putting people first, which is why his legacy will live on long after he's gone 💪. We should definitely take a page out of his book and prioritize kindness and compassion in our own lives ❤️. Rest in peace, "Papa Joe" – you'll be deeply missed 🙏💫

Mama mia! Just another reason to hit the lanes at Garden Bowl and relive some good ol' memories, 'cause we lost Papa Joe 🤠. I mean, 92 years young is still pretty crazy, but I guess even superhumans gotta go eventually 😔. But seriously, the guy was like a one-man community center – bowling alley, theatre, restaurant, and all that jazz 🎭. I'm glad he left behind a legacy of love for the city, 'cause Detroit's gonna miss his heart ❤️. RIP Papa Joe, may your memory strike up some bowling alleys and keep the vibes alive 💥
