You may not like the Liverpool red card, but it was the right call | Jonathan Wilson

Liverpool's dramatic defeat to Manchester City on Sunday was overshadowed by the contentious VAR decision that awarded a free-kick instead of a goal for what appeared to be an obvious penalty against Dominik Szoboszlai. The Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, and former player Wayne Rooney were among those who lamented the call, with many pundits labeling it a "killjoy" moment that "killed one of the great moments."

However, football's governing bodies have made it clear that referees must follow the letter of the law, even if it means making difficult decisions. The VAR review in this instance was deemed necessary to ensure that the laws were upheld, and Szoboszlai was subsequently sent off for denying a goalscoring opportunity.

While some may question the wisdom of awarding a red card in such circumstances, others argue that it is essential to maintain fairness and consistency in refereeing decisions. After all, if players are allowed to exploit loopholes by committing fouls and then being rewarded with an advantage, the integrity of the game would be undermined.

The consequences of this decision could have far-reaching implications for Liverpool's Champions League qualification hopes, as well as the title race between Arsenal and Manchester City. The question on everyone's lips now is: what if Szoboszlai had stayed on the field and scored the winning goal against Sunderland? Would that be a fair outcome in the grand scheme of things?

Ultimately, refereeing is an extremely challenging job that requires split-second decisions and a deep understanding of the laws of the game. While it's natural to feel frustrated with calls like this one, it's essential to recognize that referees are only doing their best to ensure that the game is played fairly and within the rules.

As the saying goes, "fun is not the referee's job." Their primary responsibility is to uphold the law, even if it means making unpopular decisions. As the debate surrounding this incident rages on, one thing is clear: refereeing is an art, not a science – but with VAR in place, we have a crucial tool to help referees make the right calls in high-pressure situations like this one.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around that VAR call 🤯. I get why refs gotta follow the rules, but it's hard not to feel for Liverpool when it seemed like a clear penalty. But at the same time, I can see both sides - we don't want players exploiting loopholes and ruining the game.

I'm just wondering, what if that free-kick had been converted? Would Arsenal still be in contention for the title? 🤔 The beauty of football is its unpredictability, but this VAR call has added a whole new layer of complexity to the game. Can't wait to see how it all plays out! 😬

Man, that penalty call still got me thinking 🤔... I feel for Klopp and Rooney, they seemed so right. But you gotta respect the refs' decision-making process - VAR is there to help prevent blatant mistakes that can ruin the game. It's all about maintaining consistency and fairness. Imagine if Szoboszlai had scored that goal, it would've been a total game-changer 🏆. The debate might be intense now, but at the end of the day, referees are just trying to do their job 💯. VAR is the best tool we have right now to help them out... even if it doesn't always go in our favor 😊.

i feel for lfc fans, that was a tough pill to swallow 😔. i get why refs need to stick to the letter of the law, but sometimes it feels like the var system is more about following procedure than common sense 🤦‍♂️. dominik szoboszlai did look like he'd been fouled pretty clearly, and if he'd stayed on the pitch and scored that goal, it's hard to argue with the result ⚽️. but i guess that's just the way the game goes sometimes 💔. maybe next time lfc will get the break they need, but until then, we'll just have to accept that the refs are doing their best 🙏.

omg i'm still reeling from that var review 🤯 it's like they're trying to send shivers down our spines 😅 as a format freak, i gotta say, the lack of clear guidelines on when to award a free-kick vs penalty is giving me major layout anxiety 😬 what if they had just given them a straight red? 💔 would've been so much easier for us to digest 🤯 anyway, refereeing is a tough one - those refs are under so much pressure all the time 💪 gotta respect their effort even if we don't agree with every call 🙏
