The Gambler review – kooky dancing and onstage rock in dizzying Dostoevsky adaptation

Chiten Theatre's adaptation of Dostoevsky's 'The Gambler' is a whirlwind of kooky dancing, onstage rock, and breakneck pacing that will leave even the most seasoned viewers breathless. This 90-minute rollercoaster takes the classic novella to dizzying new heights, delivering a frenetic experience that will challenge even the most familiar with the plot.

The production is constructed from fragmented pieces of Dostoevsky's text, delivered largely in Japanese at a breakneck speed, often struggling to keep up with the subtitles. The set, designed by Itaru Sugiyama, is an artful representation of the roulette wheel, its spinning action driven by the increasingly frenzied pushes of Alexei, the protagonist's exhaustion mirroring the thrills and drudgery of his addiction.

Chiten Theatre director Motoi Miura abandons naturalism in favour of a rhythmic dialogue that uses highly stylised movements to emphasize the characters' financial precarity. While this approach may not be for everyone, it results in some laugh-out-loud moments, particularly courtesy of Satoko Abe's scene-stealing performance as Grandmother, whose outbursts of 'HA HA HA!' become instantly quotable.

The seven-strong cast delivers a uniformly strong performance, with Takahide Akimoto standing out as the frantic Alexei. His monologues are intense and unflinching, conveying the depths of his obsession with roulette and those around him. The supporting cast, meanwhile, is given distinctive physical traits and phrases that bring much-needed levity to an otherwise dark subject matter.

Make no mistake: this production is not for everyone. The plot is recounting rather than acting out, and key lines are delivered directly to the audience. But if you're in the mood for a raw, immersive experience that puts addiction front and centre, then 'The Gambler' from Chiten Theatre is an unmissable event.

Omg I'm literally shaking after watching this production!!! 🤯 The pacing was insane and the dancing was on point! 😆 I know some ppl might find it weird that they're speaking in Japanese with subtitles, but honestly it added to the energy of the show. The cast is super talented, especially Takahide Akimoto's Alexei - his monologues were so intense 🤯. And Satoko Abe as Grandmother was hilarious 😂. I love how they used movement and physicality to bring out the characters' struggles with addiction. It was like being right there in the midst of the action! 💥 Can't wait for their next show 👏

🎭 I just got back from watching this adaptation of 'The Gambler' at Chiten Theatre and I'm still reeling! 🤯 The energy in the room was electric and I loved how they took this classic novella and turned it into a wild, frenetic ride 🚂. I mean, who wouldn't want to watch a dance party on stage with rock music and breakneck pacing? 😂 It's definitely not your grandma's theatre experience.

But what really stood out for me was the cast's performance – especially Takahide Akimoto as Alexei, he brought so much intensity to his monologues it was like I was right there with him 🤯. And Satoko Abe's scene-stealing moments had me giggling in all the wrong places 😂. It's clear that the director, Motoi Miura, took a risk by abandoning naturalism and going for a more stylised approach, but it totally paid off.

It's not for everyone, I get it – the plot is a bit fragmented and some parts feel like they're being spoken directly to you 😅. But if you're in the mood for something raw and immersive that'll put addiction front and centre, then this production is an absolute must-see 🎬.

omg I just watched this adaptation of The Gambler at the theatre 🎭🤯 and it was SO intense!! I mean, I've read the book before but nothing prepares you for a live performance like this 😲! the dancing and rock music added an extra layer to the story, but some parts felt kinda disorienting with all that Japanese dialogue going on fast 💨😂. the cast was amazing tho, esp Satoko Abe as the crazy grandma - she's hilarious! 🤣 and Takahide Akimoto's Alexei is just so brooding and messed up 🕷️. I'm not sure if I'd recommend it to everyone though, some parts felt a bit...out there 🤪

omg this production sounds like it's gonna be SO intense! 🤯 the idea of a 90-minute rollercoaster of emotions has me super intrigued 😲 i mean who wouldn't want to experience a frenetic whirlwind of kooky dancing and rock music? 🎸🔥 also Satoko Abe's performance as Grandmother sounds like it's gonna be EVERYTHING 💁‍♀️ gotta check out this Chiten Theatre production ASAP! 🎭

🤩 I'm so stoked to hear about this crazy adaptation of Dostoevsky's 'The Gambler'! The use of kooky dancing and onstage rock really brings the frenetic energy of Alexei's world to life 😍. And Satoko Abe's performance as Grandmother? Iconic 💁‍♀️. I can see how the stylised movements and abstract set design would be polarising, but for those who enjoy a raw, immersive experience like this, it sounds like an absolute thrill ride 🎢! Takahide Akimoto's monologues sound super intense, too... might just have to catch this show ASAP 💥.

I'm not sure what's with these new-fangled theatre productions 🤯. I mean, I loved watching plays back in the 90s, when we had real performances, you know? Nowadays it's all about gadgets and gizmos 📺. This 'The Gambler' production is like a wild rollercoaster ride 🎠, but sometimes I just want to sit back and enjoy a good story told properly. The dancing was crazy 💃🏻, but Satoko Abe's performance as Grandmother had me cracking up 😂! Takahide Akimoto's portrayal of Alexei was intense, though 👍. Still, it's not everyone's cup of tea, I suppose. Maybe I'm just old-school 📚...

omg, i loved this production of the gambler!!! 🤩 the way they broke down dostoevsky's text into smaller pieces and presented it in a super fast-paced way was so captivating! i'm not even kidding when i say my jaw dropped like 5 times during the performance. but what really got me was how the set design incorporated this crazy spinning roulette wheel that just added to the energy of the show 🎪

i have to say tho, i didn't quite get it at first - i mean, is this production more about acting out the plot or just kinda recounting it? 🤔 but once i got into it, i was completely hooked! and satoko abe's performance as grandmothers... girl, she had me DYING 😂. anyway, defo worth checking out if you're in for something different and intense 💥

🤯 I'm literally panting after watching this production! The energy was insane and I loved how it broke away from traditional adaptations of Dostoevsky's work. I mean, who needs subtlety when you can just have a huge dose of rock music and crazy dancing? 😂 Satoko Abe as the Grandmother is pure comedic genius, I died laughing every time she said "HA HA HA!" 🤣 The cast was all top-notch too, especially Takahide Akimoto's Alexei, he totally sold the desperation and obsession. It's not for everyone, but if you're in the mood for something wild and unapologetic, then this is the show for you! 💥

I just got back from this "whirlwind of kooky dancing" and I'm still trying to catch my breath... 😅 The set design was pretty cool, especially the spinning roulette wheel, but it felt like a bit too much - all that frenzied energy was kinda overwhelming 🤯. And what's with delivering most of the dialogue in Japanese? Like, I get it's meant to be fast-paced and immersive, but it made me feel like I was stuck in some kind of anime 😕. The performances were solid, especially Satoko Abe as Grandmother - that HA HA HA moment had me LOLing 💥, but for me, the experience just didn't quite land... 6/10, maybe? 🤔

OMG 🤯 just saw this theatre adaptation of The Gambler and I'm SHOOK 😲! Chiten Theatre's approach is SO bold and crazy 💥 it's like a wild rollercoaster ride that never stops 🎠. I mean, who needs naturalism when you can have STYLIZED MOVEMENTS 🔥? Satoko Abe's performance as Grandmother is HILARIOUS 👵 and the cast's energy is INSANE 💃! Takahide Akimoto's monologues are intense but also kinda mesmerizing 🤯. The set design is genius - that roulette wheel is EVERYTHING 🎲. Not everyone's gonna get it, I get it, but if you're feeling adventurous, GET READY FOR A WILD RIDE 🎢!

Omg u gotta check this new play by Chiten Theatre - its like a wild rollercoaster ride thru Dostoevsky's classic novella 🎭🔄! They took all the familiar parts and turned it into this super frenetic experience with lots of kooky dancing & rock music 😂🤩. The acting is on point tho, especially Takahide Akimoto as Alexei - his monologues are SO intense u feel like he's pulling u in 🤯! And Satoko Abe's scenes as Grandmother are hilarious 🤣...but honestly its not for everyone cuz its super stylized & fast paced 👀...if u r lookin 4 a raw experience tho, this is it 💥

🤯 just watched this theatre adaptation of The Gambler and I'm SHAKEN!!!! 😱 the dancing and rock music was wild but at times it felt like they were hitting me over the head with a hammer, all that rapid-fire Japanese dialogue was hard to keep up with 🙄 and don't even get me started on how intense some parts were, I literally felt my heart racing alongside Alexei's 😨. the cast did an amazing job though, especially Takahide Akimoto as the protagonist, his monologues were SO intense 🔥. I'm not sure if it was for everyone but I would def recommend it to anyone looking for a raw and immersive experience 💥
