Tech training hub Xchange Chicago opens Greater Grand Crossing facility

Chicago's Latest Job Creation Effort Unfolds with Launch of Xchange Hub

The city's latest bid to boost employment on the South Side has taken shape, as tech training hub Xchange Chicago officially opened its doors in a $20 million facility at 7247 S. South Chicago Ave. Spanning over 28,000 square feet, the state-of-the-art building promises to serve up life-changing career opportunities for more than 50 residents thus far.

According to Mayor Brandon Johnson, the initiative has already yielded impressive results, with thousands of jobs on the horizon. "Xchange has created dynamic career pathways and economic opportunities... paving the way for thousands of life-changing technology jobs here on the South Side," he stated during a recent opening ceremony.

At the heart of Xchange's endeavors lies an eight- to 18-week training program aimed at residents from South Side neighborhoods, including those with limited job prospects before enrollment. Hardik Bhatt, CEO of SDI Presence – the hub's anchor tenant – notes that artificial intelligence is far from eliminating IT jobs. Instead, it demands skilled professionals adept in AI applications.

Training focuses on sought-after skills like software development, cybersecurity, infrastructure management, and business analysis. According to Bhatt, companies such as Peoples Gas, insurer Aon, financial services firm Northern Trust, health data company MRO, and the city of Chicago are already lining up partnerships to provide employment opportunities for Xchange graduates.

While federal funding from the Good Jobs grant has come to an end, philanthropies and private sector investors have stepped in to bridge the gap. This summer, Xchange won a $500,000 prize sponsored by the Walton Family Foundation and the Siegel Family Endowment – further testament to its growing impact.

Currently on the waitlist with over 400 hopefuls, those seeking to enroll in Xchange can expect significant salary boosts after graduation. Annual salaries range from $50,000 to $70,000 for graduates placed with SDI, paired with full benefits. As P33 CEO Brad Henderson put it, "We are opening up real, life-changing opportunities in technology fields... bringing millions of dollars back to the U.S. and Chicago."

With corporate backing and community partnerships on the rise, Xchange's South Side hub is poised to bring fresh vitality to an area often overlooked by job creation initiatives.

I don’t usually comment but I think this Xchange Hub thingy in Chicago is kinda cool 🤔. The idea of training people with limited job prospects to get into tech jobs is really exciting 💻. I mean, AI isn't going away anytime soon, right? 😂 It's all about getting the right skills and companies like Peoples Gas and Northern Trust are already investing in this program 💸. I'm curious to see how it'll impact the South Side community 👥. If they can deliver on those promised salary boosts 🤑 and full benefits, that's a big win for people looking for better opportunities 🙌.

I'm not convinced this $20m facility is doing enough to address the root cause of unemployment on the South Side 🤔. What are the concrete numbers showing how many people actually got jobs vs those who left the training program? Have they considered the potential impact on local businesses and workers already employed in IT fields? I need more info on this before I believe Xchange's claims that it'll bring 'thousands of life-changing technology jobs' to the area 💸

🤔 so like they're opening this training program for people on the south side who don't have a lot of job prospects? that's kinda cool i guess... but like how much of a salary boost can you expect exactly? 🤑 is it just gonna be $20k more or like $50k more depending on where you get hired? and what's the deal with AI not eliminating IT jobs? isn't that what everyone was worried about? 😂 and why did they need to spend 20 million dollars on a building? couldnt they have just started online or something? 🤷‍♀️

🤔 Like, yay for a $20 million facility that's gonna change lives or whatever... 50 people are already in? That's like, super inspiring 🙄. I'm sure the waitlist of 400 hopefuls is just buzzing with excitement 💼. And who needs federal funding when you've got Walton and Siegel throwing some cash around 🤑? The city's basically creating a tech job hub to save the South Side from itself 😂. But hey, if it means people are getting paid $50k-$70k and bringing millions back to the US, I'm all for it 💸👍

Yooo, this is fire! 🤯 I'm hyped for people in Chicago having access to training programs that can boost their careers and earn a decent salary 💸. It's dope that companies are partnering with Xchange to provide employment opportunities for its graduates 🚀. I think it's awesome that philanthropies and private investors are stepping up to support the initiative too 🙏. The fact that it's focused on skills in AI, software dev, cybersecurity, etc... will definitely give people an edge in the job market 💻. Can't wait to see how it all plays out! 😎

And the fact that companies are already lining up to hire Xchange graduates is a major win. Plus, it's awesome that philanthropies and private investors are stepping in to support the program, even after federal funding ran out. I'm curious to see how it all plays out - fingers crossed for those 400+ people on the waitlist! 😊

Yaaas this is so awesome! 🤩 I'm loving the fact that they're focusing on training people in tech skills like software dev, cybersecurity, and AI apps. It's all about creating a pipeline for good jobs and helping those who need it most. The partnerships with big companies are also a huge win – it shows that there are people willing to invest in the community.

I'm excited to see this initiative take off and make a real difference on the South Side. Those salary boosts after graduation? 💸 Can't wait for folks to start seeing the impact of Xchange's work. And let's be real, who doesn't love a good underdog story? This is all about leveling the playing field and giving people access to career opportunities that might've been out of reach otherwise.

I'm also hyped that philanthropies are stepping in to support the program – it just goes to show that there are still good people out there doing good work. Keep pushing forward, Xchange! You're making a real difference in Chicago 🙌

im lovin this xchange hub initiative its about time chicago gets some real tech jobs for the south side ppl been talkin bout how stagnant it is down there but now theres a chance for growth 💻💸 like what i dont get is why companies are so slow to adapt to change theyre already makin millions but still rely on outdated skills its all about AI and cybersecurity now so lets get trained up 💪

Yooo, did you know that the unemployment rate in Chicago's South Side was around 9% before this program started 📉? Now it's down to 6% and rising! That's a big deal, fam 😎 According to data, for every dollar invested in Xchange, the city sees a return of $1.50 💸 They're talkin' about $4 million in funding from private donors, that's a lot of change 🔥 And with companies like Peoples Gas and Aon on board, these new graduates are gonna be makin' bank 💸 The training program is all about gettin' people ready for the AI revolution 🤖 Not just buildin' robots, but makin' tech jobs that don't require AI expertise 💻

By the way, here's a chart showin' the growth of Xchange since its launch:
