Wetherspoon's to open first pub in Spain – offering garlic prawns and beer from 6am

Wetherspoon's Takes First Leap into Continental Europe with 6am Pub Opening at Alicante Airport

Alicante, Spain - Get ready for the ultimate sun-kissed pub experience. Wetherspoon's, the UK-based chain of pubs, is set to open its first pub outside the UK and Ireland next January, catering exclusively to holidaymakers arriving back home from Spain's Costa Blanca.

Located at Alicante airport, the newly built pub will serve up a taste of both British comfort food and Spanish local specialties. From fry-ups and burgers to garlic prawns and omelette, the menu promises to be a fusion feast for travelers waiting for their gates. And, with beers flowing from 6am every day, these early risers can kick-start their holiday hangover in style.

The arrival of Wetherspoon's at Alicante airport marks a significant milestone for the company, which has been eyeing European expansion for nearly a decade. As revealed by founder and chair Tim Martin, who was vocal about Brexit, the chain aims to establish itself on the continent in the coming years. This latest venture comes as news that Wetherspoon's has seen slower sales growth, but still managed to boost revenue by 3.7% over the past 14 weeks.

The new pub, named after a historic medieval fortress in Alicante, boasts an enviable location with outdoor seating - perfect for topping up those sun-kissed tan. With 93 sq meters of floor space, it's surprisingly compact compared to some Wetherspoon's locations, but don't be fooled: this pint-sized pub packs a punch when it comes to delivering the usual hospitality.

When asked about the venture, Martin expressed excitement about bringing Wetherspoon's to Spain. "We believe our overseas pubs will be popular with people travelling home from Alicante airport," he said. With this first step into European waters under its belt, it won't be long before Wetherspoon's makes more waves in the continent's pub scene.

🤦‍♂️ lol what a weird location for a pub 🌴 airport, dude? i mean, i get the need to cater to travelers, but 6am opening is just too early even for a pub 🍺💤 also, how much are they gonna charge for a pint when you're trying to sleep off your flight 😂 anyway, good luck with this new venture wetherspoons 👍

I mean what's up w/ Wetherspoons opening a pub at an airport? It's like they're catering 2 tourists who just wanna drink & eat while they wait 4 their flight. I guess it's a good move, tho - who doesn't love a free breakfast @ 6am ☕️. But let's be real, it's still a pub, not a luxury hotel. They're probably gonna serve up some rubbish food & overpriced beers 2 those tired travelers 🤪. I'm all for the Brits trying 2 make it big in Spain, but this feels like a bit of a cop-out. Can't they just open a normal pub somewhere w/ decent foot traffic? 😂

🍺🌞👍 so they're gonna open up a wetherspoons at Alicante airport and cater to people waiting for their flights back home 🤩 it makes sense, who doesn't love a good fry-up or burger after a long flight 😊 and I'm loving the idea of having beer from 6am every day ☕😂 the layout might be compact but i think that's part of the charm 🏠👌

omg can u imagine sipping on a cold beer and enjoying a full english breakfast at 6am 🍺🥐 while waiting for ur flight back home from spain? wetherspoons is killing it with this new airport pub in Alicante! who cares if its not the most spacious place, its got that iconic wetherspoon's vibe going on ☀️ and a menu that'll satisfy even the hungriest of travelers 🤤. i'm all for them expanding into europe and bringing more of that british hospitality to the continent 👍

lolol, so now we're gonna get a taste of British pub life at 6am? who needs sleep when you can have Wetherspoons and a warm pint... I mean, what's next, 24hr McDonalds at JFK airport? 🤣♂️ The Spaniards must be thrilled to welcome another British chain to their airports. "Hey, we've been drinking beer for centuries, you guys can join the party too"... or something like that 😏

lol what a genius move by Wetherspoons 🤯! I mean, who wouldn't want to kick off their holiday with a hangover-friendly breakfast at 6am? And can you imagine the Instagram pics with that beautiful Alicante airport backdrop 📸?! But seriously, this is a great way for them to capitalize on all the Brits heading back home from Spain's Costa Blanca. I'm actually kinda excited to see how it plays out - maybe they'll even create some delicious Spanish-inspired menu items that'll make us non-Spanish folks go wild 🤤!
