The Guardian view on devastation in Gaza: the world wants to move on, but Palestinians can't | Editorial

The international community appears to want to move on from the devastating conflict in Gaza, but Palestinians can't afford to let go just yet. Despite a fragile ceasefire, hundreds have lost their lives and thousands more are struggling with the aftermath of two years of war.

The World Health Organization has warned that the health catastrophe in Gaza will be felt for generations, while aid organizations are finding it impossible to deliver essential supplies due to Israeli restrictions. The situation is particularly dire for children, who are being forced to sleep on bare ground in sewage-soaked clothing.

A recent US proposal has sparked widespread criticism, with a plan to divide Gaza into a "green zone" under international control and a "red zone" left in ruins. This vision is eerily reminiscent of disastrous US policies in Iraq and Afghanistan, where the pursuit of stability was often achieved at the expense of local communities.

The UN security council resolution endorsing Donald Trump's peace proposals has been hailed by some as a breakthrough, but it falls short on key issues. The references to Palestinian statehood and Israeli withdrawal are vague and conditional, leaving many to wonder what they might actually mean in practice.

Critics argue that this is little more than a ploy for governments to salve their consciences and burnish their reputations, rather than a genuine attempt to address the plight of Palestinians. Germany's decision to resume weapons exports to Israel is just one example of how some countries are choosing to look the other way.

As Palestinian commentator Nathan Brown warns, "what looked like a forever war may be metamorphosing into forever misery." The international community must do better than this. Countries that were complicit in a genocidal war have a duty to demand real change and genuine justice for Palestinians. Anything less is a betrayal of the very principles of human rights and dignity that we claim to uphold.

Wow 🀯 the situation in Gaza is literally heartbreaking, can't believe the children having to sleep on bare ground with no decent clothes πŸ€•. And this US proposal, green zone vs red zone sounds like a recipe for disaster 😩. Why do countries keep backing Israel and ignoring the Palestinians' plight? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

πŸ€• I'm still reeling from the US proposal to divide Gaza into "green" and "red" zones. It's like they're not even trying to understand the devastating impact it would have on Palestinians. A green zone just sounds like a euphemism for colonial rule. 🚫 We need real solutions, not tokenistic gestures that only serve to placate politicians' egos. And what's with the UN security council resolution? It feels like they're more interested in saving face than actually addressing the suffering of Palestinians. The health situation in Gaza is a ticking time bomb, and we can't just sit back and do nothing. 🀝 We need concrete action, not empty promises.

I'm so worried about Gaza πŸ€•. It's been two years of hell, and the ceasefire doesn't seem like a solution at all. The US proposal sounds super sketchy, like they're trying to mess with people's lives even more. I mean, what's up with dividing Gaza into zones? It just feels like another way for governments to look good without actually doing anything to help. And Germany exporting arms to Israel now is just disgusting 😑. We need to hold our leaders accountable and make sure they're working towards real change, not just saving their faces. It's time for some serious action on human rights and justice for the Palestinian people πŸŒŽπŸ’–.

I'm so sad about Gaza πŸ€•, but I think it's amazing that people like Nathan Brown are still fighting for what's right 😊. It's crazy that some countries can just ignore the situation and export weapons while Palestinians are struggling to survive πŸ’”. The fact that we're having this conversation in 2025 is a huge step forward – we should be holding governments accountable for their actions, especially when it comes to human rights 🌟. I wish more people would speak out against these injustices and demand real change, because as Nathan said, "forever misery" is not what we want πŸ’–. We need leaders who will stand up for Palestinians and fight for a just peace ✊️.

🀯 can't even... it's like, how many lives have to be lost before the international community does something about this? I mean, a "green zone" under international control sounds like just another way of saying "we're gonna leave you in peace while we play geopolitics"... and what about all those aid organizations struggling to get supplies into Gaza? It's not like they can just magic up solutions. And don't even get me started on the US proposal... it's like they think Palestinians are just gonna forget about their own lives and struggles so everyone else can have a peace deal πŸ™„. We need real change, not just empty words and half-measures. It's time for some genuine leadership and accountability from world governments πŸ‘Š

Ugh, can't believe people are already forgetting about Gaza πŸ€―πŸ˜’. Like, don't they know it's not just a distant conflict on some news feed? Those kids sleeping in sewage-soaked clothes are real lives being lost, you know? And this "green zone" idea is just another way for powerful folks to control what happens next. It feels like they're more interested in saving face than actually doing something meaningful πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. The US proposal and Germany's decision to resume arms exports to Israel are just examples of how the system can be so messed up πŸš«πŸ’Έ. We need to do better, period πŸ’–.

πŸ€” I'm getting super worried about Gaza right now... it's like, how can we just move on from this devastation? πŸŒͺ️ The thought of hundreds losing their lives and thousands more struggling after two years of war is just heartbreaking. And the fact that aid orgs are having trouble delivering supplies due to Israeli restrictions is just crazy 🀯.

I don't think it's fair to blame all Western countries for being complicit in this crisis, but at the same time, I do think some of them need to be held accountable πŸ™„. We can't just ignore the fact that aid orgs are struggling to get their work done and that Palestinian kids are having to sleep on bare ground πŸ˜”.

The US proposal is like, really problematic too... dividing Gaza into a "green zone" under international control? That sounds super suspicious 🚨. And the conditionality around Palestinian statehood and Israeli withdrawal? Vague at best πŸ’β€β™€οΈ.

We need to do better than just lip service for human rights and dignity... we need concrete actions that actually support the people of Gaza 😊. It's not too much to ask, right?

THE SITUATION IN GAZA IS JUST TOO HEARTBREAKING RIGHT NOW!!! πŸ€• ALL THOSE LITTLE ONES STRUGGLING TO FIND FOOD AND WATER... IT'S JUST TOO MUCH!!! 😩 AND YET THE WORLD SEEMS TO BE MOVING ON LIKE NOTHIN' IS WRONG WITH THIS SITUATION.

THE PROPOSAL FROM THE US ABOUT DIVIDING GAZA INTO A "GREEN ZONE" UNDER INTERNATIONAL CONTROL IS COMPLETELY OUTRAGEOUS!!! IT'S JUST ANOTHER WAY FOR ISRAEL TO COVER ITS TRACKS AND AVOID TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR ITS ACTIONS.

WE NEED TO DO BETTER, WE NEED TO BE STRONGER IN DEMANDING REAL CHANGE FOR THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE. ANYTHING LESS WOULD BE A BETRAYAL OF OUR VALUES AS A SOCIETY...
