Three-metre giant oarfish, 'palace messenger' of doom, washes up on Tasmanian beach

A rare and majestic oarfish has washed up on the shores of Preservation Bay in Penguin, Tasmania, sending shockwaves among marine experts. The three-metre-long giant, its body shimmering in shades of silver and blue, lay motionless on the beach, drawing a swarm of gulls to its side.

Local resident Tony Cheesman was the first to spot the oarfish, describing it as "massive" with "beautiful colours" and long fans protruding from its chin and head. While its unusual appearance is undeniably striking, Cheesman's reaction seemed more one of wonder than trepidation, as he noted, "It was too nice a day for that."

According to Professor Culum Brown, an expert in fish at Macquarie University, the oarfish is likely the giant oarfish, with some specimens reaching lengths of up to eight or nine metres. However, due to its deep-sea habitat, it's rarely seen by humans.

In Japanese folklore, oarfish are known as "the sea god's palace messenger," believed to herald calamity, such as an earthquake or tsunami. However, a study found no link between sightings of these slender creatures and imminent disaster. Brown notes that oarfish simply "rock up at random" with little predictability.

The discovery has sparked curiosity about the creature's legendary appeal, which is similar to other deep-sea dwellers like giant squid. According to David Waldron, an associate professor and historian, when sailors in the 19th century saw oarfish, it was often when they were ill and thrashing about on the surface.

The discovery has also drawn parallels with tales of sea serpents, with some speculating that the reported "mystic creature" at Penguin in 1878 might be an oarfish. One thing is clear: this majestic fish has captured the imagination of all who have seen it, inspiring both awe and speculation about its significance.

As for whether this particular oarfish was a harbinger of doom? Cheesman's response was characteristically downbeat, "It was too nice a day for that."

πŸ™„ So, like, the news about the oarfish washing up on the beach in Tasmania is pretty cool, but I'm surprised people are so worked up over it. I mean, yeah, it's a big deal that it's an oarfish and all, but like, we already know that from Japanese folklore and stuff.

And come on, if you're gonna make a splash (pun intended), at least get the facts straight! It was Tony Cheesman who found the thing, not some random person. And btw, it's only 3 meters long, not like 8 or 9 meters like they said.

I don't know why people are speculating about it being a harbinger of doom, though. I mean, we've got actual scientists saying there's no link between oarfish sightings and disasters. It's just "rocking up at random" with little predictability.

It's also pretty amusing that some people think it might be the same creature from 1878. Like, who even remembers that? πŸ™ƒ

omg u guys imagine seein an 8m oarfish on the beach lol i wish i c it in person!!1! 🀯🌊 i'm so fascinated by these sea creatures like r they from another world? πŸ˜‚ why do they always have to be so mysterious and deep-sea dweller or wut? πŸŸπŸ” i mean ppl are already freakin out about the "mystic creature" at penguin in 1878, now this one shows up and everyone's all abuzz πŸ—£οΈ i love how tony just said it was too nice a day for calamity lol what if we just need more oarfish sightings to calm us down? πŸ˜‚πŸŒ΄πŸ

🌊 just thinkin, like what's the vibe with these oarfish, man? They show up, look majestic, and then just... disappear. No big deal, right? 😐 some ppl think they're harbingers of doom, but probs just random deep-sea wanderers πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

omg u gotta see dis pic of da oarfish!!! 🐟😍

so like da experts say it might b da giant oarfish wit specs reachin 8-9 meters lol wut r da chances dat it just "rock up at random" πŸ˜‚? and yeah its all about da legendry thingy, but seriously who doesnt love a good sea monster story?

anywayz dis guy tony cheesman seems like a pretty chill dude, not freaked out by da whole thing πŸ™. maybe we should just be stoked dat da oarfish showed up on da beach 2 b all chill 😎

OMG 😍🐟 can you even imagine spotting one of these majestic creatures in real life?! 🀯 I mean, the colours and the fans on its chin/head are like something out of a sci-fi movie πŸ’«. And to think it's only 3m long... 🀯 mind blown!

I don't know about the whole "sea god's palace messenger" thing though πŸ˜‚, but it's pretty cool that oarfish just kinda show up randomly. Like, no warning signs or anything. Just a beautiful day and BAM, an oarfish on the beach! β˜€οΈ And who knows, maybe Tony was right... maybe it's just too nice a day for doom πŸ™.

I just can't get over how cool this oarfish is! 🐟 I mean, three metres long and shimmering in shades of silver and blue? That's like something out of a dream. And Cheesman's reaction is so calm, like he didn't want to ruin the vibe of the day with all that doom and gloom. "It was too nice a day for that" lol... I love it. I wonder how many people have seen this thing before? Like, what's the deal with oarfish being super rare but still showing up on beaches like they're just chillin'? πŸ€”

I'm also kinda fascinated by the whole Japanese folklore vibe around these creatures. Like, who comes up with this stuff? And it's crazy how some people think they can predict disasters based on seeing an oarfish. Newsflash: correlation doesn't equal causation, right? πŸ™„ I mean, we've got way more important things to worry about than giant sea fish showing up on our beaches.

I'm loving the historical connections too - like, sailors used to freak out when they saw these guys and it was usually because they were feeling sketchy. Like, okay, buddy, maybe that's just your hangover talking πŸ˜‚. But seriously, this oarfish is like a time capsule of marine mythology. Can we get more of this kind of cool stuff on our beaches? 🌊

omg thats so cool!! an oarfish finally making landfall in tasmania!!! 🐟😍 i can see why its drawing a crowd everyone should be super stoked to see this beautiful creature! no need to read all the other stuff about it being a bad omen lol πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ who needs that when you've got a fish as gorgeous as this?! lets just enjoy the awesomeness of this moment and not worry about any drama πŸŒŠπŸ’–

🐟 I mean, can you even imagine stumbling upon something like that just chillin' on the beach? 3 meters long and shimmering in silver and blue... sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie! 🀯 But what's really interesting to me is how locals are handling it. Like, Tony Cheesman just sees it as "too nice a day for that"... LOL. 🌞 It's almost like we're seeing this creature through the lens of folklore and mythology. I mean, who needs drama when you've got a sea god's palace messenger washing up on your beach? 🌊

🀯 come on guys, lets get real here... an oarfish washing up on the beach is like, super cool and all but it's not like its trying to send us some sort of cosmic warning or anything. Newsflash: it just swam too close to shore 🌊. and btw what's with the whole "harbinger of doom" vibe? Like, a 3m oarfish isn't exactly the end of the world πŸ˜‚. I mean sure it's cool that we got to see one, but let's not make it out to be something it's not πŸ™„

🌊πŸ’₯ I mean, think about it, folks! This rare oarfish washes up on the beach and suddenly everyone's all like, "Oh no, is this the sea god's palace messenger coming to foretell disaster?" 🀯 But let's not get carried away here. It's just a fish, right? 🐟 I mean, we know from history that oarfish were seen by sailors as omens of bad luck, but how reliable is that link in the first place? πŸ“Š And what about all those "mystic creatures" that got caught up in the 19th-century sailor tales? Just a bunch of tall tales if you ask me. 😏

And let's not forget Tony Cheesman's response when he saw it - "It was too nice a day for that." I love it! He's just being real, folks. Not getting caught up in all the hype and speculation. Maybe we should be focusing on how to protect these amazing creatures instead of making them into harbingers of doom? 🌊πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€” I mean, can you imagine stumbling upon something as epic as an 8-metre-long oarfish just chillin' on the beach in Tasmania 🌊😲? It's no wonder locals and marine experts are freaking out! πŸ˜‚ The whole "sea god's palace messenger" vibe is wild, but it's also kinda funny how Japanese folklore links these deep-sea dwellers to disasters. I mean, it's just a fish, right? 🐟 Not trying to predict tsunamis or earthquakes on its own. But seriously, the fact that sailors used oarfish sightings as a sign of being sick or cursed is wild πŸ€ͺ.

I love how the discovery has sparked this conversation about the ocean's mysteries and our fascination with deep-sea creatures. It's like, we're all just trying to understand these creatures' significance without getting too caught up in mythology or superstition πŸŒŠπŸ“š. And can we talk about Tony Cheesman's comment about it being a "nice" day? πŸ˜‚ Like, what's not nice about an oarfish showing up on the beach?!

🐟πŸ’₯ I mean, can you imagine stumbling upon something like that on the beach? Like, it's not even dead or anything, just lying there all elegant and whatnot. The stories about oarfish being bad omens are pretty cool, but I guess they're more like legend now. I've seen videos of giant squid and stuff like that, and yeah, they're wild too. But this one's on a whole different level. 🀯 The fact that it was spotted by some random dude who just happened to be outside is already kinda funny. And Cheesman's reaction? πŸ˜‚ "It was too nice a day for that" is literally the best way to put it.

🌊 Omg, can you even imagine seeing something like that on the beach?! 🀯 The way it just lay there all majestic and shimmering in the sunlight... it's like Mother Nature decided to put on a show! 🎭 I mean, three metres long is no joke, but I guess when it comes to an oarfish, size doesn't matter as much as being rare and beautiful! 😍 And can we talk about the folklore surrounding these creatures? Like, who wouldn't want to be seen by a "sea god's palace messenger"?! πŸŒŠπŸ‘‘ #OarfishSighting #TasmaniaWildlife #MysticCreatures

🌊 I'm thinking, what's up with these legends about oarfish being omens of disasters? I mean, it's just a fish! 🐟 They're like the celebrities of the deep sea – everyone knows who they are, but sometimes you wonder if there's more to them than meets the eye. The idea that this one particular oarfish showing up was a sign of bad things to come is just silly. It's like spotting a bird with an unusual plumage and suddenly thinking it's a sign from God or something πŸ˜‚. I guess what I'm saying is, let's not get too worked up over this. The fish is cool, but it's still just a fish πŸŸπŸ’¦

I think what's really cool here is the way nature can put things into perspective. I mean, we're always so caught up in our own worries and concerns, but this oarfish just kind of shows up, like. And Cheesman's right, it was a beautiful day, what's the point of being scared about something that's not even going to happen? It's like life is trying to tell us to chill out, you know?

πŸ˜‚πŸŒŠ omg can u believe the vibes on this thing?? i mean, it's like this massive silver giant just chillin on the beach and no one's freaking out... πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ except maybe the local birds who are all like "omg food!" πŸ˜‚ anyway, the oarfish story got me thinking - what's up with these deep-sea fish being sooo mysterious? like, they're just swimming around in the dark and we're all obsessed with them 🀯 david waldron mentioned that sailors used to see 'em when they were feeling crap... i'm kinda loving this connection between weird sea creatures and human drama πŸ˜‚ can't help but wonder what's next - a mermaid sighting? 🐠

I'm just reading about this massive silver fish on the beach in Tasmania and I'm fascinated by it 😍. The fact that it washed up here, 3 meters long, is already crazy enough, but what's even more interesting to me is how locals are reacting to it with wonder and not fear πŸ€”. Like Tony Cheesman said, 'It was too nice a day for that' - I can almost imagine him smiling while he looks at the fish 😊. And those long fans on its chin and head? Unreal! 🌊 The idea of oarfish being messengers from Japanese folklore is pretty wild too, but it's cool to know there's no link to disasters πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. Who knows what other secrets this creature holds?

🌊 think its cool how we get to experience these mysteries from the deep like, you know? our brains are wired to connect dots and tell stories 'bout this fish showin' up outta nowhere. but maybe thats just human nature. 🀯 anyway, all them warnings about calamity & sea gods... just another way of explainin' nature's power, right? 🌴 the fact that its not a harbinger of doom is refreshing – it's just a reminder to appreciate the beauty in unexpected places πŸ πŸ’™
