"The New Big Five: Wildlife Photography Book Highlights Animals on Brink of Extinction"
A new photography book, "The New Big 5," is shedding light on some of the world's most endangered species. The project, founded by British photographer Graeme Green, aims to raise awareness about the plight of these animals and inspire action.
In a twist on the traditional "Big Five" term, which once referred to the most challenging game animals in Africa to hunt, Green has created a global "New Big 5" that features species such as elephants, polar bears, lions, gorillas, and tigers. These five animals were chosen after a 2021 poll in which over 50,000 people from around the world voted for their favorite species.
The book, featuring stunning photographs by renowned wildlife photographers like Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen, as well as essays by conservationists and activists such as Jane Goodall, highlights the urgent need to protect these animals. Green says the book is a "global call to action" on issues such as habitat loss, poaching, pollution, and climate change.
According to the UN, nature is declining at an unprecedented rate, with around one million animal species facing extinction. The "New Big 5," all of which are threatened, serve as ambassadors for what's happening in the natural world, Green notes.
The book also explores potential solutions, such as rewilding and the importance of indigenous communities in conservation. A chapter on endangered species highlights the alarming threat climate change poses to animals outside of the "New Big 5."
Green spent nearly two years curating the images for the book, working with over 144 globally renowned wildlife photographers from around the world.
The book's release comes as a timely reminder of the urgent need to act to protect the planet's wildlife. As Jane Goodall notes in the afterword, "we have a window of time during which we can start to heal some of the harm we've inflicted on the natural world, but only if we get together and take action now."
"The New Big 5: A Global Photography Project For Endangered Wildlife" is now available for purchase, offering a powerful visual reminder of the importance of conservation efforts.
