‘The New Big 5’: Wildlife photography book turns the lens on animals at risk | CNN

"The New Big Five: Wildlife Photography Book Highlights Animals on Brink of Extinction"

A new photography book, "The New Big 5," is shedding light on some of the world's most endangered species. The project, founded by British photographer Graeme Green, aims to raise awareness about the plight of these animals and inspire action.

In a twist on the traditional "Big Five" term, which once referred to the most challenging game animals in Africa to hunt, Green has created a global "New Big 5" that features species such as elephants, polar bears, lions, gorillas, and tigers. These five animals were chosen after a 2021 poll in which over 50,000 people from around the world voted for their favorite species.

The book, featuring stunning photographs by renowned wildlife photographers like Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen, as well as essays by conservationists and activists such as Jane Goodall, highlights the urgent need to protect these animals. Green says the book is a "global call to action" on issues such as habitat loss, poaching, pollution, and climate change.

According to the UN, nature is declining at an unprecedented rate, with around one million animal species facing extinction. The "New Big 5," all of which are threatened, serve as ambassadors for what's happening in the natural world, Green notes.

The book also explores potential solutions, such as rewilding and the importance of indigenous communities in conservation. A chapter on endangered species highlights the alarming threat climate change poses to animals outside of the "New Big 5."

Green spent nearly two years curating the images for the book, working with over 144 globally renowned wildlife photographers from around the world.

The book's release comes as a timely reminder of the urgent need to act to protect the planet's wildlife. As Jane Goodall notes in the afterword, "we have a window of time during which we can start to heal some of the harm we've inflicted on the natural world, but only if we get together and take action now."

"The New Big 5: A Global Photography Project For Endangered Wildlife" is now available for purchase, offering a powerful visual reminder of the importance of conservation efforts.

OMG u guys 🤯 this photography book is literally giving me LIFE! 🌟 I mean, who wouldn't want to save these majestic creatures from extinction? 😔 The fact that over 50k ppl voted for their fave species shows us how passionate people are about wildlife conservation. And the pics by Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen? To. Die. For. 📸

I'm so glad Graeme Green is taking a stand on habitat loss, poaching, and climate change. We need more ppl like him using their platform to raise awareness about these issues. The UN's stats are crazy, btw - 1 million animal species facing extinction? No thanks! 😩

But hey, the book also highlights some awesome potential solutions, like rewilding and indigenous communities in conservation. And Jane Goodall's afterword is like a wake-up call 🚨 we have to act now or risk losing these incredible creatures forever. I'm def adding this to my reading list ASAP! 📖

idk about this whole "New Big 5" thing... its cool that people care about these animals, but I think its kinda weird to make it a big deal with a global poll and all that 🤔. cant we just focus on saving them without making it some sort of trendy movement? also, I'm not sure if using popular wildlife photographers is really the best way to raise awareness... dont get me wrong, their pics are amazing, but maybe its time for someone from the community to share their story too 💕.

omg this is so disheartening 🤕 i mean its like every species is on the brink of extinction and we're still taking selfies with elephants and tigers 📸 like what are we even doing?! we need to take action NOW, not just click a button and hope someone else does it for us 💔

📸 I gotta disagree with this whole "New Big Five" thing 🤔. It's just a fancy rehashing of the old term. What's wrong with calling them out by their actual numbers? Like, elephants are #1, not some arbitrary number 🐘. And what's up with including polar bears in this group? They're not even native to Africa, so it doesn't feel right 🌍. I mean, I get the message about endangered species and all that, but can we please just stick to facts and stop trying to be trendy? 🙄

🐠🌿 the new big five is like super important 🤯 i mean we gotta raise awareness about these animals and their habitats or they'll be gone in no time 🕰️ 50k people voted for their favorite species which is pretty cool 💡 i wanna see more pics of elephants 🐘 and polar bears 🐻 and lions 🦁 and gorillas 🐒 and tigers 🐯 1 million animal species facing extinction is crazy 😱 gotta do something about it like rewilding or indigenous communities helping conservation 🌳💚

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that we're losing ONE MILLION animal species 🐠😱 at an unprecedented rate and there's this amazing book showcasing our last hope for saving them, like, what's taking us so long?! 😩 We need more people like Graeme Green who are willing to take a stand and use their platform to raise awareness. I wish more of these photogs were getting the recognition they deserve, it's not just about the animals, but also the humans who are fighting for them 💪

Ugh, can't believe these animals are still around, you know? 🐠 I mean, we've been talking about this stuff in the net for years and it's only just getting attention now... 50k people voting on their favorite species is pretty cool, though! 🤔 Anyway, it's awesome that Graeme Green is doing his part to raise awareness and get people to care. The pics look insane, I've already seen some of Ami Vitale's work online, super inspiring. We gotta do more than just take pictures, though - rewilding and supporting indigenous communities are key. 🌿💚 Can't believe we're running out of time for these animals...

omg i just read about this new photography book "The New Big 5" 📚🐠 and it's literally so eye opening... i mean, have you seen the pics of elephants in habitat loss ? 🌳😢 it's heartbreaking how quickly we're losing these amazing creatures to extinction. like, climate change is a HUGE part of this problem, i think we need more people talking about it on social media & sharing their own stories to raise awareness 💬👀 50k+ people voted for the new big 5 and it's awesome that everyone is coming together to make a difference 🌟

🌎 this project is super needed! i mean, who doesn't love animals right? but seriously, these five species are literally on the brink of extinction and it's not just about them, its about the whole ecosystem 🤯. it's crazy to think that we've only got like a year or so to act before things get out of hand. climate change is no joke and it's affecting animals everywhere 🌪️. i'm glad someone's taking action and using their platform for good 🙏. Graeme Green's book looks amazing btw, can't wait to check it out 👍

This book is literally breaking my heart... I mean, who thought it was okay to put these amazing creatures on the brink of extinction? Like, what's next? The new big 5: extinct animals? 🤯 I'm so done with humans destroying our planet and its inhabitants for their own selfish reasons. We need more books like this, but we also need real change, you know? Like, what are we going to do about it? 🤔 These animals aren't just statistics on a page, they're living beings that feel pain, fear, and joy. They deserve our protection, not just our Instagram likes 😩

Man, this book is like a wake-up call for all us humans who think we're above nature 🌎💦. I mean, come on, one million animal species on the brink of extinction? That's some crazy math right there. It's like the UN said, "Hey, guys, you need to step up your conservation game ASAP" 👊.

But let's be real, this whole thing is a classic case of supply vs demand. We're always talking about how we need to save the planet, but what do we actually do? 🤔 Do we just buy some polar bear calendars and call it a day? I don't think so. This book is saying we need to get our hands dirty, invest in rewilding programs, and support indigenous communities who know more about conservation than we ever could.

It's time for us to put our money where our mouth is. We can't just sit back and say "Oh no, poor polar bears!" when it comes down to it. We need to take action, make some changes, and hope that future generations don't have to deal with this mess 🤞.

omg this new book is so inspiring 🐠 i mean who wouldn't wanna save the planet's wildlife? 🌎 the fact that we can literally buy it and support the cause is amazing 💸 graeme green is like a hero for doing all that research and collab with so many talented photographers 📸 jane goodall's words are so true, we gotta act now or else 🕰️ i'm totally getting this book 🎁

I just read about this new book "The New Big 5" and it's really inspiring 🌟! I think it's awesome that they're using photography to raise awareness about endangered species. The fact that over 50k people voted for their favorite species is crazy! I'm loving the diversity of animals featured in the book, from elephants to tigers - it's a great reminder of how important conservation is 🐘💚. I also appreciate how the book highlights potential solutions like rewilding and indigenous communities playing a role in conservation. We really do have a window of time to make things right! 🕰️ Let's all do our part to help protect these incredible animals and the planet 🌎

omg i'm literally so inspired by this book!!! 🤩 Graeme Green's idea of redefining the term "Big Five" to highlight endangered animals around the world is genius! 🌎 I mean, who wouldn't want to help save elephants, polar bears, lions, gorillas, and tigers? 🐘🐻🦁🐒😍 We need more people like Jane Goodall leading the charge on conservation efforts! 💪 And the photos are STUNNING 📸 can't wait to get my hands on this book and share it with everyone i know!!!

I'm getting major vibes from this 🌟🐠 project! I mean, who wouldn't be inspired by a book that's literally showcasing the most endangered species on our planet? It's like, we need to wake up and smell the coffee (or in this case, the elephant poop) - climate change and habitat loss are REAL DEALS!

I'm loving how Graeme Green is using a fresh spin on the classic "Big Five" term. It's time for us to move beyond just being conservationists, we gotta be the solution! 🌱💚 And can I just say, those images by Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen are MIND-BLOWING?! The way they're highlighting the beauty and majesty of these creatures is giving me ALL THE FEELS 💖

We gotta take action now, or else we'll be saying goodbye to some incredible animals. 🐳💔 It's time for us to step up and make a difference. Let's get behind conservation efforts and support organizations working tirelessly to protect our planet's wildlife! 🌟

I'm actually really excited about this new book "The New Big 5" 📚🌟! I mean, who doesn't love animals and want to help them thrive? It's awesome that all these talented photographers came together to raise awareness about endangered species. And can we talk about how cool it is that the public got to vote for their favorite species? It's like a big group project to save the planet 🌎💚! Plus, I love that Jane Goodall wrote an afterword - she's like the ultimate conservationist icon 💪! Of course, we gotta take action on climate change and habitat loss, but at least there are people like Graeme Green making it easier to see what needs to be done. And let's not forget all the gorgeous photos in this book... it's gonna make a difference, one image at a time 📸💕!

🐠 I'm so glad to see this photography book coming out 📚! It's like, we need more people sharing their passion and creativity about wildlife conservation 🌟. I mean, have you seen some of these animals on the brink of extinction? Like, elephants are literally losing their habitats because of human activities 🤯. We gotta do something about it! I love how Graeme Green is using his platform to raise awareness and inspire action 💪. And featuring Jane Goodall's words in the afterword? Exactly what we need more of - people speaking truth to power 💕. It's time for us all to step up and protect our planet's precious wildlife 🌎💚

I'm all for this project 🌟📸, it's amazing that someone like Graeme Green has taken it upon themselves to shed light on these incredible animals. I mean, who doesn't love an elephant or a polar bear in their lifetime? 😍 But, at the same time, I'm not sure if we're just being romanticized here... are we really taking concrete actions to stop their decline? 🤔 Like, what's the actual plan of action besides rewilding and, um, more conservation efforts? 🌿💪 We need numbers, folks! How many species do we need to save before it's too late? And what about these indigenous communities that are being highlighted in this book - how can we support them more effectively? 💬

🌟 I'm so stoked to see this new book coming out! It's like, we need to raise awareness about these animals ASAP 🐘💨, and it's awesome that there are people like Graeme Green who care enough to do something about it. The fact that 50k+ people voted for their fave species is so cool 😮, and I love how they're featuring pics from renowned wildlife photographers 👍

But what really gets me is the scale of the problem 🌊. Like, one million animal species facing extinction? It's heartbreaking 😭. We need to take action, and this book is a huge step in that direction 💪. I'm definitely gonna grab a copy and share it with my friends 📚

It's also great to see indigenous communities getting the recognition they deserve 🌟. They've been taking care of these animals for centuries, and we should be learning from them 🤝. Rewilding is another idea that resonates with me – we need to get back to nature more often, not just talk about it 🌳

Anyway, I'm all for this book being out there, inspiring people to care about the planet's wildlife 🐠💕. Let's do this! 🎉
