The Sound of Music review – a rich, relevant revival big on the bangers

Nikolai Foster's richly entertaining revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic musical The Sound of Music is a testament to the enduring power of music as a balm for the human spirit. While the show's serious intent remains intact, Foster's production adds a new layer of emotional depth to the familiar story of the Von Trapp family's flight from occupied Austria.

The real-life tale of personal loss, political integrity, and the healing power of music is expertly woven throughout the narrative, with Maria's love for Captain von Trapp at its core. Molly Lynch brings boundless energy to the role, launching into her numbers with a guitar hero flourish that sets the tone for the entire production.

David Seadon-Young's walking wounded Captain von Trapp is a poignant portrayal of a man torn between his grief and his duty as a father. His performance in Edelweiss is particularly notable, conveying a sense of forlorn defiance that adds complexity to the character.

Foster's production is a masterclass in atmosphere and feeling, with a set design by Michael Taylor that transports the audience to the Austrian mountains. The singing and dancing are equally impressive, with the ensemble delivering high-energy performances that showcase their vocal talents.

The choreography by Ebony Molina is a highlight of the show, with its lolloping rhythms and wonderfully darting moves bringing joy and exuberance to the proceedings. The three alternating casts of children bring an infectious energy to the stage, relishing the chance to sing, dance, and feel again amidst the turmoil.

Ultimately, Foster's revival of The Sound of Music is a richly relevant and emotionally resonant production that honors both its serious intent and its bangers – catchy tunes that have become synonymous with the musical theatre experience.

I'm not buying it 😒. This musical is just a feel-good propaganda fest 🎶. I mean, come on, we're supposed to believe that everyone in Austria was just singing and dancing along to "Do-Re-Mi" while the Nazis were coming for them? 🙄 It's all just a sugarcoated historical drama 🍭. And don't even get me started on the set design – it looks like they took every cliche from a Disney movie 🏰. I'm sure the real-life story is way more complex and nuanced than this watered-down adaptation 😒.

idk why ppl r saying this new sound of music revival is just a retread... Foster's take on it actually feels fresh? like, i get that the story's classic and all, but he's managed to tap into something deeper this time around. Molly Lynch's energy as maria is infectious, and Seadon-Young's captain von trapp has a haunting quality to his performance 🎵🤘

I don’t usually comment but I just saw this show and it was like nothing I’ve ever experienced before 🤯 The music, the dancing, the acting... everything came together in a way that felt so authentic and heartfelt 💕 I loved how the set design transported me to Austria, it felt like I was right there with the Von Trapp family 🌄 And Molly Lynch as Maria? Wow, she brought this crazy energy to the role and had me singing along to "Do-Re-Mi" on repeat 🎶 The choreography was also insane, I loved how it blended traditional Austrian dance with modern flair 💃

I just saw this weird dream I had last night where I was flying over the mountains on my bike and it felt so real 😴. I mean, I'm pretty sure I actually left my phone at home, but when I got back to my place, I found this old video of me doing a sweet trick on my bike from like 5 years ago 🤹‍♂️. Anyway, has anyone else ever had one of those weird dreams that feel so vivid? And speaking of vivid, have you tried that new energy drink that's all the rage? I'm not sure if it's just me, but I feel like my senses are on 10 now 😎.

I loved this show 🎵👏! Molly Lynch was amazing as Maria, I felt like I was right there in the mountains with her. And David Seadon-Young's Captain von Trapp just broke my heart every time he sang Edelweiss 😭. The kids were so talented too, it was adorable watching them dance and sing on stage. But what really got me was how beautifully this show wove together history and music - it's like the songs are still healing wounds even 70 years later 💔. Can't wait to see what Foster does next 🤞

just saw this revival of sound of music on broadway 🌄 and i'm totally blown away 🤯 the cast is phenomenal, especially molly lynch as maria she's got some serious pipes goin' on 🎤 david seadon-young as captain von trapp is soooo good, his emotions just pour outta him every time he sings 🌟 and that choreography by ebony molina? 🔥 my jaw dropped multiple times 😲 the whole production just feels so alive and energized, like they're really celebrating life amidst all the hardships ❤️

🎭💕 I'm loving this revival of The Sound of Music! 🙌 Nikolai Foster's got it right, the music really is a game-changer. I mean, who doesn't love "Do-Re-Mi" or "My Favorite Things"? 😊 But what I love most about this production is how it brings depth to the story. Like, I'm not just singing along to the catchy tunes, I'm invested in Maria and Captain von Trapp's journey too. 🤗 And David Seadon-Young as Captain von Trapp? 🙌 He's got some serious acting chops, bringing this broken man to life with such emotion.

And can we talk about the set design for a sec? 🤔 It's like you're transported to the Austrian mountains or something. I'm totally here for it! 😍 And those kids in the ensemble? So full of energy and joy - it's infectious! 💃🏽🕺

All in all, this production is a masterclass in atmosphere and feeling. It's not just some cheesy musical, it's got heart. ❤️

I just saw this amazing show 🎭🌄 Nikolai Foster's direction has totally nailed it, I love how he's brought out the emotional depth in the characters, especially Captain von Trapp - David Seadon-Young is so talented 😊. And Molly Lynch as Maria is giving me LIFE! 💃 The set design by Michael Taylor is like a breath of fresh air, totally transported me to those Austrian mountains 🌉. I also loved the choreography by Ebony Molina, it's so joyful and infectious! 🤩 And can we talk about the children's cast? They're like little bundles of energy and talent, bringing so much joy to the show 💖. Overall, just a masterclass in production values, I'm totally sold on this revival 🎉

I loved this show, it was like I was transported to Austria 🤩! The energy on stage was electric and the kids were so talented, I was literally clapping along with them 👏. But what really got me was David Seadon-Young's performance as Captain von Trapp - his emotions just poured out of him and you couldn't help but feel for the guy 😔. And that set design? Mind blown 🤯! It felt like I was right there in the mountains with them. The music is still iconic, but it's amazing how a good production can take these old classics and make them feel fresh again 💖.
