"Filmmaker Peter Hedges had a stroke of genius when he came up with the idea for 'Pieces of April', but it almost never made it to the big screen.
In 2002, while living in New York City, Hedges' mother was diagnosed with cancer. The experience sparked an idea that would become his breakout film: a story about a young woman, played by Katie Holmes, who struggles to host her estranged family for Thanksgiving on the Lower East Side.
Hedges wrote and directed 'Pieces of April', but he faced numerous challenges in getting the film made. Despite securing $6 million in financing, which was unheard of at the time for an indie film, the project fell through due to logistical issues.
However, fate intervened when the initial funding fell through. Hedges eventually shot the film on a shoestring budget of just $300,000 with InDigEnt digital movie collective, using a camcorder and paying his cast relatively low wages.
Despite these hurdles, 'Pieces of April' went on to become a critical and commercial success. The film won multiple awards and exceeded its budget by 10 times in box office receipts. Hedges has said it is the only one of his films he revisits regularly, and that Thanksgiving is his favorite holiday and most special project.
Interestingly, the film was initially intended to be a score-free production. However, after consulting with colleagues, Hedges decided to opt for a soundtrack featuring Stephin Merritt's haunting tunes, which added to the film's emotional impact.
