64-year-old bystander wounded by stray bullet in Upper Manhattan, police say

A stray bullet wounded a 64-year-old woman while she was walking through the streets of Inwood, Upper Manhattan, sending her to Harlem Hospital. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. Monday when the woman claimed to have seen a group of young people nearby, according to police.

One of these individuals allegedly fired a 9mm round in the direction of the woman, striking her in the left buttock. Witnesses reported that the shooter fled southbound on Broadway after firing the shot. The victim was taken into stable condition at Harlem Hospital and is currently receiving medical attention.

As for the alleged shooter, police are still investigating the incident and have yet to make any arrests. This marks the latest example of gun violence in a neighborhood that has seen a significant decrease in shootings this year compared to last.

According to recent NYPD data, there have been nearly 60% fewer shootings reported in the 34th Precinct, which covers Inwood and Washington Heights. From January 1 through November 23, seven shootings were reported in the area – down from 17 at the same time period in 2024.

man this is crazy another innocent person gets hurt by some young dude with a gun like what's going on in our city? 🀯 people are tryin to make a living and live their lives but can't even walk down the street without bein shot at it's gettin outta hand, they need to do somethin about this gun violence for real

omg what's going on with these young ppl in NYC they're just shooting willy nilly no regard for human life 🀯 like what's the point of all this violence? the victim was just minding her biz walking down the street and BAM! next thing she knows she's in the hospital πŸ₯ how can we expect to rebuild our communities when ppl are more worried about their own drama than taking care of each other? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ and what's with the NYPD not making any arrests yet? is this just another case of ppl thinking they're above the law? πŸš”

πŸ€• This latest incident of gun violence in Upper Manhattan is a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle with crime in our communities 🚨. While it's great to hear that the victim, a 64-year-old woman, was taken into stable condition and is receiving medical attention, the fact remains that she was innocent bystander who got caught up in a senseless act of violence πŸ’”.

The statistics on gun violence in this area are truly heartening πŸŽ‰. The nearly 60% decrease in shootings reported in the 34th Precinct is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement and community outreach programs 🌟. However, we can't become complacent πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. There's still much work to be done to ensure that our neighborhoods feel safe for everyone, regardless of age or background 🀝.

The fact that witnesses reported seeing a group of young people nearby suggests that this may not have been an isolated incident πŸ’‘. It raises questions about the state of youth engagement and social services in our community πŸ€”. Are we doing enough to provide alternatives to violence and crime for at-risk youth? πŸ’

πŸ˜” This is just so heartbreaking! A stray bullet coming out of nowhere and hitting that poor woman... I can only imagine how scared she must have been. πŸ’” It's crazy to think that gun violence is still a thing, especially in areas that are supposed to be safer. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ The fact that there were people around who could've stopped it or called for help just makes me wanna scream! 😩 We need more community support and more action from our leaders to prevent this kind of senseless violence. πŸ’– My heart goes out to the woman and her loved ones during this tough time. πŸ€—

Man, this is so crazy! I was just walking around Upper Manhattan last month with my family, and we saw a group of young people playing basketball in Inwood πŸ€. We thought it was nice to see them out and about, but now I'm wondering if they were involved in something like this. The fact that there's been a decline in shootings in the area is definitely a good sign, but at the same time, you never know what's going on behind closed doors πŸ€”. I feel so bad for that 64-year-old woman who got hurt – her life could've been seriously impacted if that bullet had hit her somewhere else πŸ’”. The police are still searching for the person who did this, and it's just frustrating when you think about all the young people out there who might be involved in something like this πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Can we please find a way to make our communities safer? 😞

ugh this is so crazy a 64 year old grandma gets hurt by a stray bullet while just walking around... it's like they're not even safe anywhere πŸ€•. i'm really worried about my friends who are going to be out on the streets soon, especially at night when the sun goes down. it's like we can't feel safe anymore. and 60% fewer shootings this year compared to last is still way too many 🚫. what can we do as a community to make sure everyone feels safe? maybe more initiatives for mental health support or something? anyway, i hope the woman recovers soon πŸ’•.

🚨 Can't believe this is still happening in NYC 🀯. All these gun violence incidents just bring back memories of my grandma who was killed by a stray bullet in DC back in '92 πŸ’”. It's like they're trying to recreate a nightmare from the past. How many more innocent lives gotta get lost before we do something about it? 😩 The NYPD is still investigating, but what about the community coming together to help solve this? We need more people on the streets keeping an eye out for each other and reporting suspicious activity ASAP πŸ‘€

Man, this is just crazy! 🀯 I keep thinking that's not New York we live in. A stray bullet comes flying out of nowhere and hits a lady just walking down the street... it's like something out of a movie. And to think she almost made it to Harlem Hospital without serious injury? That's just a miracle, right?

It's so sad that this is happening in neighborhoods that are supposed to be safer now, thanks to all the efforts to reduce gun violence. 60% fewer shootings reported already this year compared to last... it's like we're making progress or something? πŸ€” But still, one incident like this makes you wonder what's going on behind closed doors.

We need more answers from the police, and we need them fast! πŸ’‘ But I guess that's just how investigations work, right? Fingers crossed they catch whoever did this soon.

πŸ€• this is just awful! another innocent person gets hurt by some young idiot with a gun... what's going on with these kids?! can't they see that their actions have consequences? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ and meanwhile, Harlem Hospital is probably overwhelmed again because of the city's lack of proper gun control measures... it's like, we're not doing enough to keep our citizens safe! 😩 I'm so angry right now... how many more people have to get hurt before something changes?! πŸ’”

πŸ˜”πŸš¨ Another day, another innocent life affected by gun violence πŸ€•. This incident in Upper Manhattan is just the latest example of how senseless these acts can be πŸ’”. I mean, what's going on with our society that young people feel the need to resort to violence? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It's not like there aren't enough resources available for them to channel their energy into something positive... anyway, this poor woman is lucky to have survived and now she'll have to deal with the aftermath of being shot πŸ˜“. And what about the shooter? Still on the loose, just chilling while his victims suffer πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. It's just so frustrating when you think about all the progress we're making in some areas, like a decrease in shootings in this particular precinct... but then incidents like this come along and make it all feel like a step back πŸ˜”.

Ugh this is getting crazy 😩 I mean, you'd think that with all the efforts to reduce gun violence, we're still seeing incidents like this where innocent people get hurt πŸ€• Like, what's going on? The stats are actually pretty good for Inwood and Washington Heights, but then this happens and it just feels like a step back. And the fact that it happened in broad daylight with witnesses around is just wild πŸ™„ I'm glad the woman is okay, though - 64 is way too young to be dealing with this kind of thing πŸ’”

πŸ€” so i'm reading this about some stray bullet hitting a 64-yr-old woman in upper manhattan and im thinkin' like, what's goin on here? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ gun violence is such a huge problem in new york city and we need to start takin' real action about it. 🚫 not just all these stats and data that show shootings are down in certain areas, we need to see more concrete solutions like increased community policing and mental health support.

and can we talk about how easy it is for these incidents to happen? some random kid with a gun shows up out of nowhere and BAM! someone gets hurt. πŸ’₯ where's the accountability? why ain't nobody gettin' held accountable for this kind of reckless behavior?

anywayz, i'm not sayin' that everyone in the 34th precinct is bad or nothin', but we gotta do better than just makin' excuses and hopin' for the best. πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€•πŸ˜· oh man this is crazy! I'm still trying to process what happened to that woman 😩. She was just walking down Broadway and suddenly gets hit by a stray bullet 🚫?! It's just not right, you know? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ the fact that there are people out there who can't even control their guns is just heartbreaking πŸ’”.

I've been living in New York for a while now, and I have to say, gun violence has gotten way too common 😑. It's like we're not doing enough to prevent it or hold these people accountable πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. The NYPD needs to step up their game and make sure that whoever did this is caught ASAP πŸ’ͺ.

I'm just so frustrated that a neighborhood that was supposed to be safer can still have incidents like this happen 😩. And now, the 34th Precinct is actually seeing a decrease in shootings? That's awesome πŸŽ‰... but not enough! We need to keep pushing for change and making sure our city is safe for everyone 🌟.

idk about this...like what's the real story here? is it really just some random stray bullet or is there something more to it? i mean, the fact that the shooter allegedly fired in the direction of a woman who was walking alone and then just took off? that seems pretty suspicious. and what's up with the police not making any arrests yet? is it possible they're covering something up? πŸ€” and btw, have you seen the stats on gun violence in this neighborhood? nearly 60% fewer shootings this year compared to last...that sounds too good to be true to me πŸ˜’

🚨😑 what's goin on w/ this stray bullet thing? someone gettin all reckless w/ a gun & hurts an innocent person πŸ™…β€β™€οΈ 64 yrs old woman, stable condition but still... how hard is it to keep a gun safe?! πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ NYPD got their work cut out 4 them. hope they catch the dude who did dis

Ugh, this is so crazy 🀯! Gun violence is just getting out of control, you know? I mean, a stray bullet hitting a woman just walking down the street? It's like, what even is that?! The fact that it happened in Inwood, which has seen a decrease in shootings, just makes it even more senseless. I'm glad the woman is okay, but can't we just have a safe community for everyone to live and walk around without worrying about being shot? πŸ™

And the police are still investigating, but it's been ages since there were any arrests... like what even happened to that person?! Did they get caught or what? It's so frustrating when these things don't get solved quickly enough. And now we're hearing about the 9mm round, which is just adding to the chaos. Can we please just have a safer city for everyone?! 😩

OMG u guys r like so relieved that gun violence is down in Inwood but this incident still hits hard πŸ€•. I mean, who needs a stray bullet to ruin ur day, rite? πŸ˜’ The fact that there's been a 60% decrease in shootings is def something to celebrate tho πŸ’ͺ. But idk how much of an impact the NYPD data really has if they can't even catch ppl who shoot ppl πŸ€”. It's like, we're making progress but we gotta keep pushin πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ. Can't nobody just live their best life without bein worried about gettin shot πŸ˜‚.

Ugh, I'm still shaking my head about this... a stray bullet hits an innocent woman walking home πŸ€•πŸš¨. Can you even imagine being out on the streets and just getting grazed by a bullet? It's like something out of a horror movie. The fact that it was just a stray round from some young person who thought they could just shoot without consequences is just, no πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. I'm glad the victim is okay, but this just goes to show how crazy life can be in NYC sometimes. It's like, you're trying to get on with your day and then BAM! You're dealing with gun violence all over again πŸ’”. Anyway, fingers crossed that whoever did this gets caught and held accountable 🀞.

πŸ€• this is really disturbing... i mean, it's one thing to hear about gun violence in news, but to see a specific person, a grandma, get hurt by stray bullet... 😱 it's just not right. and what's even more frustrating is that cops are still investigating, no arrests yet πŸš”. the stats on NYPD data showing 60% fewer shootings in the area this year compared to last is actually kind of heartening, but it's also a reminder that we're only seeing half the story... πŸ‘€ if one person gets hurt, it's just another statistic until someone takes responsibility and justice is served πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ.
