‘Zootopia 2’ Directors on Paying Homage to ‘The Shining’ and Why They Scaled Back the ‘Silence of the Lambs’ Nod

Zootopia's directors paid homage to The Shining in a thrilling sequence that sent chills down fans' spines.

The plot of Zootopia 2 was tailor-made for the duo to flesh out their idea, which drew inspiration from Stanley Kubrick's classic horror film. In one pivotal scene, the Lynxley family patriarch, Milton, tries to keep the truth about the city's history under wraps, all while hiding in a maze within his grand manor.

The Shining concept came early on in the script's development, with Bush and Howard initially envisioning Nick and Judy navigating the labyrinthine maze. However, as they delved deeper into the project, they realized that bringing this idea to life would be an enormous undertaking.

"We had this idea of these lynxes that were obviously the villains, and it made sense to have this grand manor, and then this giant maze in the back of it," Bush explains. The animators faced a daunting task: creating a snow-covered maze with millions of leaves that could withstand destruction via a giant Snowcat.

The visual effects team's challenge was immense, requiring them to rig the animation to be "destroyed" seamlessly. As a nod to Jack Nicholson's iconic character, Pawbert limps through the maze in a scene reminiscent of The Shining.

Disney animator Louaye Moulayess was an ardent fan of The Shining and wore a t-shirt from the film on the day his shot was assigned out. He successfully petitioned for the role, bringing "unhinged" Pawbert to life in a memorable sequence that left Bush in stitches during the lighting review.

Michael Giacchino's score added an extra layer of tension to the scene, perfectly capturing the ominous atmosphere reminiscent of The Shining's famous theme.

While some may miss the original four-minute-long scene from The Silence of the Lambs, Bush and Howard wisely scaled back their homage to avoid overwhelming their core audience. They opted for a more concise nod to Jonathan Demme's classic horror film instead.

By drawing inspiration from these iconic horror films, Zootopia 2's directors created a thrilling sequence that showcases their creativity and attention to detail.

omg i was literally screaming at the screen when pawbert limped through that maze lol 🤣👀 it's like they took all the best parts of The Shining and mashed them into zootopia 2, but you know what? it kinda works 🤔 i mean, the idea of a creepy grand manor with secrets hidden in every nook was always gonna be cool. and that animation team is insane 🤯 their work on that snow-covered maze was seriously impressive. i'm so here for this 😆

omg u gotta see this latest zootopia movie!! 😂 they took the shining and made it into this epic maze scene with pawbert limping around like nick from the shining lol imagine that 🤣. but honestly, i think its kinda cool how they scaled back the homage to avoid overwhelming the audience. plus micahel giacchino's score is giving me all the chills 🎃️. can we get a sequels now though? 🤔 zootopia 2 pls!!

omg I'm so down for the homage to The Shining in Zootopia 2!!! 🤩 it's such a clever move by Bush and Howard to draw inspiration from Kubrick's classic horror film, especially with the maze scene 🌳💀. I mean, who wouldn't want to see Nick and Judy navigating through that crazy labyrinth? 😱 Michael Giacchino's score added so much tension to the scene too! 💀🎵 it's awesome how they scaled back the homage to avoid overwhelming their core audience, but still managed to pay a sweet nod to The Shining 🙏. can't wait for the movie to come out!! 🎥

you know what's weird, i was just thinking about this the other day, have you ever noticed how some movies can transport you to another world, but like, in a good way? not like, in a "i'm stuck here forever" kind of way. like, i was rewatching old episodes of my favorite anime and i started thinking about the animation process, and how they use lighting and shadows to create this whole other atmosphere... anyway, zootopia 2's homage to the shining was so cool! i love how they took a horror classic and made it their own. 🤯🎥

I gotta say, that sequence in Zootopia 2 had me on the edge of my seat! I mean, who wouldn't want to see Judy and Nick navigating through this crazy maze? 🤯 The way they paid homage to The Shining is super clever, especially with Pawbert limping around like Jack Nicholson's character. 😂 And that score by Michael Giacchino just adds to the tension! I loved how they scaled back the scene from The Silence of the Lambs, it would've been a bit too much for some viewers. 👍 The attention to detail is insane, especially with the animation and visual effects team's work on the snow-covered maze. It's clear that Bush and Howard really put their heart into this project! 😊

OMG I'm low-key obsessed with the new Zootopia 2 scene 🤯! The Shining vibes are EVERYTHING 🕵️‍♂️, and I love how Bush & Howard scaled it back for the big screen - still gives me chills 💀! Michael Giacchino's score is on point too 🔊! And can we talk about Pawbert's limping scene? 😂😂😂 that's pure perfection 🙌. What's your fave part of this epic homage? 🤔

🤔 I'm not convinced this was actually inspired by The Shining... just because the directors mentioned it doesn't mean they were heavily influenced. All we have is their word for it 🙃. And what about the timeline of the script development? How do we know they weren't working on other ideas first? 🕰️ The article mentions the team was "daunted" by bringing the maze to life, but that could be code for "we didn't know how to make it happen". 🤯

omg i loved the nod to The Shining in Zootopia 2 🤩 that maze scene gave me major chill vibes 😱 i was totally sold when pawbert limped through it like jack nicholson's character 🙌 michael giacchino's score just added more tension and made it feel so much more intense 💥 i think the directors did a great job of scaling back the homage to avoid overwhelming the audience, but still getting their creative juices out there 🎨💡

OMG u guys zootopia 2 is literally giving me major chills!! 🎃 The way they incorporated The Shining vibes into the scene w/ Pawbert limping thru the maze was SOooo eerie & suspenseful 🕷️ I'm a huge fan of both Zootopia & The Shining, and to see Disney pay homage to Kubrick's classic in such an epic way is just WOW 😲. They did an amazing job scaling back the homage tho, cuz if they went full-on Silence of the Lambs it would've been a lot for the main audience 🤯. Can't w8 2 see more of this movie!!! 💥

🤔 I gotta say, using The Shining as an inspiration for the maze scene in Zootopia 2 was pure genius 🎥! It added this whole new level of tension and suspense that made me feel like I'm right there with Nick and Judy navigating through that crazy maze 😬. And can we talk about how cool it is to see those animators' skills put to the test trying to make that Snowcat destruction look realistic? 🤯 The music added to it all, too - I love how Michael Giacchino's score captured that same eerie vibe as the original theme song 👻. It's amazing how they took this classic horror film and made it work with a cartoon like Zootopia 2. Definitely one of those cool Easter eggs that makes me appreciate the filmmakers' creativity even more 💡

I'm loving this movie! The way they took The Shining concept and made it work in Zootopia is pure genius 🤯👍. I mean, who wouldn't want to see Judy Paws navigating a crazy maze with all those lynxes lurking about? 😂 And that Pawbert scene though... Michael Giacchino's score just added to the tension - chills down my spine every time! 😲 What's your favorite part of this movie? Has anyone seen it yet? 🎥👀

omg i just watched zootopia 2 and that maze scene in the shinning vibes was giving me major chills!!! 🤯😱 i love how they took inspiration from classic horror films and made it work with the zootopia universe, it's so cool! 😎 michael giacchino's score added this extra layer of tension that just brought it all together. i think it's awesome how bush and howard stayed true to the original while still making it their own. 🤩 also louaye moulayess's portrayal of pawbert was SO on point lol 😂

OMG 🤯 I'm so loving the Shining vibes in Zootopia 2! 😎 The labyrinthine maze is giving me all the chills, it's like they took straight out of Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece. 🎃 But you know what's even crazier? The amount of planning that went into creating that epic scene - I mean, millions of leaves and a snowcat that can destroy it all? 💥 It's mind-blowing how much work goes into making our favorite cartoons feel so real!

As for the nod to Jack Nicholson's iconic character, Pawbert... 😂 I love how they brought his "unhinged" energy to life. It's like he's channeling all the madness from The Shining! 🤪 And can we talk about Michael Giacchino's score? 💔 It's giving me goosebumps every time I listen to it.

You know what's wild though? How much you can appreciate the horror influences in a kids' cartoon like Zootopia. Like, who would have thought that The Shining and Silence of the Lambs would be inspirations for a film meant for all ages? 🤯 It just goes to show how versatile and creative the directors are.

man I remember watching The Shining on DVD back in the day 📺 and it was like my heart was literally racing during those scenes where Jack Nicholson's character is going crazy... fast forward to Zootopia 2 and they managed to capture that same vibe with the grand manor maze scene, it gave me chills 😱 especially when Pawbert limps through it like Jack 🙏 Michael Giacchino's score added this extra layer of tension too, it was like I was right there with Nick and Judy trying to survive that maze 🤯

omg I'm literally shaking just thinking about that maze scene 🤯😱 it's like they took the best parts of The Shining and mashed them with Zootopia's already amazing world 😂🦊 and I gotta say, that Pawbert limping scene was pure gold 💃🕷️ Michael Giacchino's score is everything and more for me 🎵😍 I don't think they missed the original 4-minute-long scene from The Silence of the Lambs either, because let's be real, who needs all that drama when you have a Snowcat 🚂💨 and a majestic manor with a maze? 😎

omg u guys i just watched zootopia 2 and that maze scene from the shining is EVERYTHING 🔥😱 i was on the edge of my seat thinking pawbert limped his way through that labyrinth and michael giacchino's score had me shivering like a leaf 🎃💀 but seriously who needs the silence of the lambs when u can have snowcats & lynxes fighting for control? 😉

I'm getting so sick of all the nostalgic nods they're shoehorning into every Disney sequel 🙄. Like, I get it, The Shining is a classic horror film and all, but do we really need a maze in Zootopia 2?! It's just distracting from the actual plot and making everything feel like a shallow attempt to appeal to old-timers. And can we please just have some new ideas for once? 🤯 These directors are smart, I'll give them that, but they're relying too much on familiar tropes instead of innovating. The score was nice, I guess, but it didn't make up for the whole "we're trying too hard to be cool" vibe 🎶
