“Players are selfish”: Fallout 2’s Chris Avellone describes his game design philosophy

😒 just read that Chris Avellone thinks players are selfish 🙄 it's kinda true, we do expect our games to be tailored to us 😎 but maybe he's taking it too far? I mean, shouldn't the designer be able to create their own vision without being too "player-centric"? 🤔 and what about the other people who play with us, don't they deserve some input too? 🤝

You know I'm an old-school gamer 🎮, but I gotta say, Avellone's design philosophy resonates with me on a deep level... in my day, we didn't have all these fancy graphics and whatnot, but we had heart, you know? We'd spend hours rolling dice, creating our own stories, and it was all about the experience 🤔. Nowadays, it seems like games are more about pushing pixels and making bank 💸. Don't get me wrong, I love a good graphics-intensive game as much as the next guy, but there's something special about connecting with a story on a deeper level... that's what Avellone's all about, I think. Players should be at the forefront of shaping their own experiences 🎯, and it sounds like he's got it figured out 👍. It's gonna be interesting to see how his studio's new project turns out! Fingers crossed they stick to the formula 😊

I love how some devs really get it! 🤩 Like Chris Avellone's approach makes total sense, you know? Players are the ones who'll spend all night playing your game, so you gotta give 'em what they want, right? I mean, have you seen those Skyrim mods? The community is like a whole new game, and that's exactly what Avellone's trying to tap into. It's all about creating this immersive world where players feel invested in the story. And, honestly, it makes sense why he started out with tabletop games - the collaborative nature of D&D is key to understanding player agency. I'm hyped to see how his new project turns out! 🚀

🤔 this guy gets it, you know? its not just about creating a cool game with fancy graphics, its about making the player feel like they're actually a part of something. like, i mean, ive played games where u just get to mow down bad guys or whatever and its fine, but when ur invested in the story and the characters, man... that's when things start to get real 🎮

I love how this designer puts players first 🤝 it makes total sense that every aspect of the game should cater to their desires and needs. I mean, who wants to play a game where you're just stuck on repeat? I've seen my kiddos get so invested in games like Minecraft or Roblox because they can build and shape their own worlds - it's amazing! 👶 It's all about creating that sense of ownership and agency, and Avellone's got it down pat. And I'm loving the focus on community and collaboration - that's something we should be doing more of in games, don't you think? 🤗
