Ellen DeGeneres left Trump's America. Will the British weather force her to return? | Arwa Mahdawi

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, two of America's most beloved celebrities, have left the Trump-led United States behind. The pair, who were based in California before Donald Trump won the presidential election last year, have made it clear that they are committed to staying on the "saner side" of the Atlantic.

However, their decision may be put to the test by Britain's famously unpredictable weather. Rumors are circulating that DeGeneres and her wife have grown tired of the harsh winter gloom in the UK and are planning a return to Trumpland. According to sources close to the couple, they miss their friends and can't bear the thought of another British winter.

While it's understandable that even the most hardened Brexit supporters might find the long, dark nights of winter unbearable, DeGeneres' decision seems more about politics than climate change. As her mother would tell you, a good American sweater is all you need to stay warm. But for those who can't cope with a little frost and wind, America might seem like a more appealing option.

It's not just DeGeneres who has left the US in search of greener pastures – many celebrities have made similar moves since Trump won the election. Amy Schumer, Miley Cyrus, Barbra Streisand, and Rosie O'Donnell are all among those who have relocated to the UK or elsewhere in an effort to escape what they see as a rising tide of fascism.

However, not everyone has followed suit. A number of high-profile figures, including comedian Courtney Love, have remained in the US despite growing concerns about Trump's policies and their impact on society.

One group that seems particularly affected by Trump is the expatriate community – people like DeGeneres who have made a living from their American careers but are now considering leaving due to the president's leadership. A recent poll found that 75% of researchers in the US are considering leaving, while international students are also showing signs of losing interest in studying abroad.

As the situation in the US continues to deteriorate, it seems likely that more and more people will follow DeGeneres' lead and seek a new life elsewhere. Whether they'll stay in the UK or opt for countries like Canada or Ireland remains to be seen – but one thing is certain: America's latest brain drain has begun with a bang.

🤔 I'm not sure about these celebs jumping ship to escape Trump, tbh... can't they just wear more sweaters? 🧶 Like, seriously though, I get why some people are leaving the US, but it seems like a lot of them are just following the crowd. Amy Schumer and Miley Cyrus were already living abroad before this whole Trump thing, so what's changed? And isn't it kinda rude to leave America when they've built their careers here? 🤷‍♀️

🤔 I'm not surprised, tbh. The US has always been about extremes - good vibes and bad, sunshine and rain. If you're looking for that "saner side" of the Atlantic, the UK might be more your cuppa. 🇬🇧 But on a lighter note, can we talk about how ridiculous it is to think that an American sweater will save you from Brit winters? Like, 50 degrees Fahrenheit doesn't exactly feel like sunshine ☀️

🌍️ I'm not surprised that celebrities are fleeing the US, tbh 🤷‍♀️ it's been pretty dramatic since Trump took office 😬. But what's really telling here is how scared they're not even willing to brave the British winter ❄️ just yet! Like, a good American sweater would literally keep them warm? 🧶👀 What does that say about our society right now? Are we so desperate for comfort and security that we'd abandon ship (pun intended) over a little bit of frost?

But seriously, this says something deeper about the kind of leadership we're willing to tolerate. If 75% of researchers in the US are considering leaving because of Trump's policies 📚💡, it's time for us to take a hard look at what that means for our collective future. Are we really as divided as we think we are? Can we find common ground and work towards something better than just escaping each other? Food for thought! 💭

I'm not surprised Ellen & Portia are outta there 🤯! Did you know 54% of Americans believe Trump's presidency will negatively impact the country's international reputation? And, fun fact, the UK's weather isn't that bad, especially compared to other countries like Canada where temps can drop to -40°C in winter ❄️! But seriously, 1 in 5 expats who left the US said they were motivated by concerns about "racism and xenophobia" 🚫. On a related note, have you seen the chart showing the growth of hate crime reporting in the US since Trump's inauguration? It's no joke, folks... 👀

I'm low-key surprised Ellen and Portia are leaving the US, I mean, it's not like they're going to start wearing sombreros and salsa dancing on their talk show 🤣. But seriously, I think there's more to this than just the weather (although, let's be real, British winters can be pretty harsh ❄️). The whole fascism thing might be a bigger deal for some people than they're letting on. And honestly, if you ask me, it's not like America's always been perfect – we've had our fair share of controversies and whatnot.

I'm curious to see how this plays out though. Will Ellen and Portia stick with their "saner side" or are they just looking for a change of scenery? And what about all the other celebrities who have made the move? Are they going to start a "US expats" support group or something? 🤔 Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure – this is gonna be interesting 👀
