Magic wears off in ‘Wicked: For Good’ - Detroit Metro Times

The magic of Wicked has worn off, and its sequel, For Good, falls flat. The film picks up where the last installment left off, with Elphaba, now a powerful force as the Wicked Witch of the West, vowing to take down the oppressive regime in Oz. However, this setup only serves to highlight the fundamental issues plaguing the movie.

While Cynthia Erivo shines as Elphaba, her character's development is largely absent from the first film, making it difficult for the sequel to create meaningful connections with audiences. The story suffers from rushed pacing, and the love triangle between Elphaba, Galinda, and Prince Fiyero feels contrived. Even the iconic songs, like "No Place Like Home" and "For Good," fail to leave a lasting impression.

The film's intention is unclear – does it aim to reimagine The Wizard of Oz with a darker edge or serve as a glossy musical with forgettable tunes? Unfortunately, For Good tries to tackle both themes without successfully executing either. The subversive spirit that drove the first Wicked remains absent in this sequel.

Despite its visually stunning sets and design, Wicked: For Good is a shallow waste of resources. It's a disappointment that feels like it's more concerned with appeasing fans than delivering a cohesive narrative or meaningful commentary on fascism. As such, it's hard to muster up enthusiasm for the film.

🎥😐 I mean, who doesn't love a good sequel? Unfortunately, Wicked: For Good is just that - a sequel that's lost its magic 🔮. Cynthia Erivo's got some serious pipes on her, but Elphaba's development in the first film was basically non-existent 🤷‍♀️. And don't even get me started on that love triangle - it feels like the writers threw a bunch of emotions at the wall and hoped something would stick 💔. The pacing is all over the place, the music is forgettable 🎵, and the themes just don't quite land. It's like they're trying to be both dark and sparkly at the same time... how do you even do that? 😂 Anyway, it's a shame 'cause I was hyped for this one 👀. Visuals are nice, but that's about it 🎨.

i just saw wicked for good and it was meh 🤔 i mean cynthia erivo is still amazing as elphaba but the rest of the movie felt like it was sleepwalking through the plot 🕰️ the love triangle between galinda and fiyero felt so forced and didn't make any sense to me 😒 also the pacing was super rushed, it's hard to invest in anything when it feels like nothing is happening for a while ⏱️ i don't get why they tried to tackle both dark and musical themes without actually doing either justice 🤷‍♀️ the sets were so pretty tho 💃🏻

🤦‍♂️ I mean, come on! They messed up Elphaba so bad in For Good 🙄. She's all powerful and stuff, but where was her growth? How did she even get from being this misunderstood outcast to a full-on Wicked Witch? It just doesn't add up. And don't even get me started on the pacing – I swear, they were trying to cram too much into 2 hours 🕰️. The love triangle is whack too. Like, who cares about Galinda and Fiyero? Let Elphaba be the main focus! 😒

omg I'm so sad to hear that Wicked: For Good didn't live up to the magic of the first one! 🤕 I love Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and I was really looking forward to seeing her shine in this movie, but it sounds like she got a raw deal with her character development. 🤔 The story just felt all over the place to me, it's like they tried to cram too much into one movie. And those love triangle vibes were so awkward 😂 I'm still hoping that maybe the sets and design would make up for everything, but sadly it sounds like they just fell flat for me 🎭

I'm totally with you on this one 😒... I mean, not 🤷‍♂️. The Wicked sequel is a total mess! But at the same time, I think Cynthia Erivo's performance as Elphaba is still gonna save it... nope! 👎 Her character development is actually what makes me wanna see more of her journey. And those iconic songs? 🎶 I mean, they're super forgettable 😴. It's like they took all the magic away from Wicked and left us with a boring ol' musical. But hey, maybe it's just my expectations... nope! 👀 I was really looking forward to a darker, edgier Oz, but what we got is just a shallow, glossy mess 🌈.

ugh I'm so disappointed in this one 🤕 The magic of Wicked was truly special and I feel like they lost that spark in For Good 💔 Cynthia Erivo is still amazing as Elphaba but her character development made me sad because we didn't get to see her grow and change over time. And the pacing? 😴 it felt so rushed and like they were trying to fit too much into one movie. I also miss the subversive spirit of the first one 🤖 it's like they tried to tackle too many themes at once without really executing any of them. I'm all for a good musical, but this one just didn't resonate with me 🎵😔

I mean I've been checking out box office numbers and it seems Wicked: For Good has tanked like 40% globally, with the US gross being around $130m 📉. The production budget was a whopping $150m, so yeah that's gotta be a major letdown. Meanwhile, its Rotten Tomatoes score is just 22%, which is pretty mediocre 🤔. But hey, it did get Cynthia Erivo some awards buzz for her performance as Elphaba - maybe that's the only redeeming quality 😐. The film's also been getting some flak on social media, with fans expressing their disappointment and frustration 📱. I guess you could say Wicked: For Good has left a lot to be desired 💔. Here's a quick graph comparing its worldwide box office gross to other musicals in the same genre:

Wicked: For Good | $130m (US) | 22% (Rotten Tomatoes)
The Greatest Showman | $435m (US) | 88% (Rotten Tomatoes)
Les Misérables | $441m (US) | 67% (Rotten Tomatoes)

It's clear that Wicked: For Good just didn't live up to expectations 🤷‍♀️.

I'm really disappointed in this one... 🤕 Wicked is an amazing story and I loved the first movie, but For Good just didn't live up to expectations 😔. I think they tried too hard to make it darker and edgier than the original, but ended up losing what made Wicked special in the first place 👎 Cynthia Erivo is still a rockstar as Elphaba, though - her talent can carry a movie so far! 🙌 But overall, I'm sad to say that For Good feels like a waste of time and resources 🤦‍♀️. Maybe they should've stuck with what worked the first time around? 😔

omg i just watched wicked 2 and i'm so disappointed 🤕🎭 the music was okay but nothing compared to the first one, and elphaba's character was still kinda meh after 2 films 👀 i know cynthia erivo is talented but she deserved better storyline development. they tried to do too much with this sequel and it fell flat 😴 like, what even is the point of wicked 2? can't just rehash the same themes over again 🙄

I mean, I'm kinda disappointed in Wicked: For Good... 😐 The magic has indeed worn off 🤔. They tried too hard to bring back that original subversive vibe from the first one, but it just doesn't translate here. It feels like they're trying to check all these boxes for fans, instead of actually crafting a solid story 📝. And don't even get me started on the pacing... it's like they rushed through everything in an attempt to fit in too much 🕒️. Cynthia Erivo is still amazing as Elphaba tho 🙌, but the rest just falls flat 🤷‍♀️

idk what's going on here... think they took all the magic out of wicked and tried to make a sequel that's just a mess 🤔. Cynthia erivo is amazing as elphaba but her character development is non existent, so like how are we supposed to care about what she's doing now? 🙄 also, that love triangle feels so forced, it's like they threw in some random characters and expected us to be all emotional about it 😴. and don't even get me started on the pacing, it's like they were trying to cram too much into 2 hours. 🕰️ overall i'm just disappointed, feel like they sacrificed the subversive spirit of wicked for some glossy musical that's just...meh 😐

I was really looking forward to this sequel but it totally fell flat 🤕 The original Wicked was magic and I think they lost that special something in For Good. It feels like they're trying too many things at once and it just doesn't work. Cynthia Erivo is still amazing as Elphaba but her character's development is so lacking - it's like we're dropped into the story without any real background. And don't even get me started on that love triangle, it's like they took all the leftover drama from Oz and mashed it together with no purpose 😒

man I'm so underwhelmed by this sequel 🤕 it's like they took all the magic from the first Wicked and replaced it with just... nothing 💔 i mean don't get me wrong Cynthia Erivo is amazing as Elphaba but her character development is literally non-existent 🙄 and the story is just so rushed it feels like they're trying to cram too much into this one movie 😩 and that love triangle? ugh it's just so contrived 🤮 and can we talk about how confusing the themes are? like is this supposed to be a dark Oz or just a musical with pretty songs? 🎵 either way it feels like they're trying to have it both ways and failing miserably 🙈

OMG, I'm so boooored by this new Wicked movie 🤕🎭 - I mean, who needs an evil queen when you can just make her powerful and complex? They should've spent more time developin' Elphaba's character 'cause now she feels like a clone of the first film. And don't even get me started on Galinda and Fiyero, ugh! Their love triangle is so forced it makes me wanna roll my eyes. 🙄 The songs are okay, I guess, but they're not as catchy as "Defying Gravity" 😴. The whole thing feels like a mess - they tried to do too much and ended up with nothin' 🤷‍♀️...

I gotta say, I was really hyped about this sequel but now I'm just underwhelmed 🤔. The whole thing feels like they're trying to recapture lightning in a bottle and it's just not happening. Cynthia Erivo is still amazing as Elphaba but her character development is basically non-existent from the first movie. It's like they're assuming we all remember how she was supposed to be this complex character now, but honestly, I'm not buying it. The pacing is whack too - it feels like they're trying to cram in too many plot twists and songs. And don't even get me started on that love triangle. 😒 I mean, what's the point of it all? Is it a darker Oz or just a musical with some cool visuals? I'm not feeling either way about it... 🎬

I just watched this new Wicked movie and I gotta say...it was a letdown 🤔. I mean, Cynthia Erivo is amazing as Elphaba, but the story fell flat for me. It felt like they rushed through it and forgot to develop the characters properly. The love triangle was super awkward too 😒. And don't even get me started on the songs - they just didn't stick with me.

I think they tried to make this darker version of Oz, but it ended up feeling like they were trying way too hard 🤪. It's like they forgot what made the first Wicked so special in the first place. The sets and design were gorgeous, though 👏. But overall, I was really disappointed with how it turned out 😔.

Ugh 🤔 I just saw Wicked: For Good and I gotta say, it was total letdown 💔. I mean, they said it was gonna be darker and edgier like the first one, but all we got was more shallow drama 😐. And don't even get me started on Cynthia Erivo - she's talented as always, but Elphaba's character development? 🤷‍♀️ Non-existent, basically.

I also didn't buy that love triangle thingy... it felt like they were just trying to make room for more songs and dance numbers 💃. Newsflash: we don't need more of those forgettable tunes 🎶. The first Wicked was subversive and bold, but this sequel is just a watered-down mess 😒.

It's like they made the movie just to appease fans and not actually put any thought into it... what a waste of resources 💸! I'm really disappointed in this one 👎.

Ugh, I'm so disappointed in this movie 🤦‍♂️! I loved Wicked when it came out, but now that I've seen For Good, I just don't get it. The main character Elphaba is amazing, Cynthia Erivo is a total rockstar 💖, but her development is basically non-existent from the first one... it's like they forgot what made her cool in the first place 🤔.

The pacing feels so rushed and the love triangle is just awkward 🙄. And don't even get me started on the music... I mean, I love "No Place Like Home" but this sequel just can't top that song 🔥.

I think they were trying to do too much and it just didn't work out 💔. It's like they wanted to make a dark reboot of The Wizard of Oz or something, but instead it's just... meh 🤷‍♂️. All the pretty sets and stuff can't save this movie from being a total letdown 😐. I was really looking forward to seeing more depth and meaning, but it feels like they prioritized fan-pleasing over substance 🎉.

omg i feel you about wicked: for good being a letdown 🤦‍♀️... cynthia erivo is amazing but even she can't save this mess 😔. i loved the first wicked movie so much and was hyped for a sequel, but it seems like they just phoned it in this time around 📞. what happened to that subversive spirit that made us love elphaba in the first place? 💥 instead of exploring deeper themes like fascism, they're just coasting on nostalgia and pretty sets 🎨. for good better stick to making amazing music, not trying to be a complex story 😊
