Two Orange Line passengers took a daring detour off the rails on Wednesday afternoon. As an Orange Line train approached Roxbury Crossing station, its doors swung open – albeit unexpectedly – at the platform side while it was still stopped outside the station. The train, however, refused to budge, leaving two passengers stranded in the track area.
In a bizarre incident, both passengers managed to exit the train without falling out but instead walked freely off into the rail yard. Thankfully, neither suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital with minor ailments.
Orange Line supervisors and Transit Police officers rushed to the scene to assist the pair, ensuring their safe removal from the track area. An investigation by the T's safety team has so far ruled out any mechanical issues or problems with the train itself.
Service on the Orange Line was briefly suspended as officials conducted a routine inspection. However, normal service resumed later in the day, after the train had been taken out of commission for a thorough examination.
The incident has left authorities reviewing their protocols to prevent such events in the future, although they praised the bravery and quick thinking displayed by the two passengers who took matters into their own hands – literally.
