‘100 Nights of Hero’ Review: A Mischievous Fairytale Laid Low by Its Withheld Approach

"100 Nights of Hero" Falls Flat Despite Star-Studded Cast

In this fantasy romance, writer-director Julia Jackman's mischievous spark is all too often doused by a lackluster approach to its source material. Based on the graphic novel "100 Nights of Hero" by Isabel Greenberg, the film takes cues from "One Thousand and One Nights," but in Jackman's hands, these narrative layers feel more like thinly veiled extensions for their fictitious storyteller - a queer reimagining of Scheherazade that fails to quite live up to its promise.

The film begins strong, with Felicity Jones narrating the origins of the story and introducing us to Cherry (Maika Monroe), a melancholy woman who's married off to Jerome (Amir El-Masry) in a Victorian dollhouse conception. Jerome's neglectful nature sets the stage for their lackluster progeny, and we're introduced to Hero (Emma Corrin), Cherry's loyal servant with pixie hair, who maintains a watchful eye on the proceedings.

As Manfred (Nicholas Galitzine) takes an extended leave of absence from his castle, he makes a wager with his scheming friend to seduce Cherry in his stead. But it's Hero's nightly stories that truly bring the house down - literally at times, as she appears to call on witchcraft, causing Manfred to lose all sense of days and weeks.

However, these enchanting tales are often more like a tease than a payoff, leaving us with more questions than answers about the secret society of storytellers that Hero's yarns gesture towards. The film gestures towards feminist themes and queer pairings, but they're never presented with enough passion or subtlety to truly ignite.

The film's visuals are undoubtedly gorgeous, capturing a lush, dreamlike quality that's reminiscent of Wes Anderson's aesthetic. But despite its picturesque world, the camera seems hesitant to explore it, instead lingering on the still panels of its comic source material. The actors' chemistry is undeniable, but they're seldom allowed to explore it either.

Ultimately, "100 Nights of Hero" feels like a film that's more told than felt - a story of love and companionship beset by hegemonic structures that's never quite brought to life on screen. Despite its star-studded cast and mischievous spark, the film is a disappointment, with only its visuals managing to evoke a sense of allure.

I mean, I was really hyped for this one 🤔... but honestly, it just didn't live up to the hype, you know? The cast is incredible - Felicity Jones, Emma Corrin, and Maika Monroe are all so talented! 💫 But despite their best efforts, the story feels like it's missing something. I think the problem is that the film tries to do too much at once 🤯... it's got this gorgeous visuals, but they're not fully utilized because the pacing is all over the place ⏱️.

And can we talk about how Hero's stories are just... tease-y? 😐 They're so tantalizing, but then you're left with more questions than answers. I mean, what's up with that secret society of storytellers? 🤔 It feels like a major plot thread that's just kind of... dropped.

For me, the film feels like it's stuck in this limbo between fantasy and reality, and it never quite finds its footing 🌪️. The chemistry between the actors is undeniable, but they're not given enough to work with. Overall, I'd say it's a solid effort, but it's just... disappointing 😐

I was really hyped for this movie 😐, but honestly it felt like they watered down the whole "100 Nights of Hero" vibe. I mean, Emma Corrin's character, Hero, is supposed to be this fierce and magical storyteller, but she just seems so... reserved. I love Felicity Jones' narration tho 👍, that part was fire 🔥! But yeah, it feels like they didn't quite live up to the graphic novel's potential. The visuals were def gorgeous tho 💕, wish they'd explored them more in the story 🤔

man... i was hyped for this movie 🤔, but it sounds like it fell flat 🎬. the idea of a queer reimagining of "one thousand and one nights" is so cool 😎, but it feels like the film just phoned it in instead of really digging into the story 📚. felicity jones as the narrator is already a win 🙌, but then you hear her talk about how cherry's marriage is basically a prison sentence... it's just meh, you know? 🤷‍♀️ the visuals are gorgeous tho, like i can totally picture this film being a lush, dreamlike romp through history 🏰📸. and don't even get me started on the cast - emma corrin as hero is basically my spirit animal 👯‍♀️... but, yeah, it sounds like they didn't quite capture the spark that i was hoping for 💡

🤔

so i was super hyped for this movie but unfortunately it didnt live up to my expectations 🎬. i think the main problem is that the story gets lost in translation 📚. its like they took the graphic novel and just kinda... went with it? 🔄 instead of really exploring the themes and characters, we get these super short and sweet stories from hero's perspective 😊. and dont even get me started on how the pacing is all over the place ⏱️. sometimes its so slow you'll be like "are we still watching a movie?" 🤯.

i do love felicity jones tho 🙌 she's always so charming and engaging on screen 👀. and emma corrin as hero is pretty cool too 💁‍♀️. but overall, i think the film just kinda... fizzles out 🔥. idk man, maybe ill watch it again to see if my opinion changes 🤔. anyone else feel me? 🤗

🤔 so i just watched 100 Nights of Hero and honestly it was a bit meh for me 🎥 the story seemed kinda flat and didn't really make me feel anything 🙅‍♀️ don't get me wrong felicity jones as the narrator is amazing 👏 but the whole thing just felt like it was missing something 🔍 i mean we had this gorgeous world to explore but instead of digging deeper into the characters' emotions, the film just kinda... stopped 💤 amir el-masry and maika monroe were nice i guess 🙃 but they didn't really get to do much beyond their roles 😐 maybe it was just an off night for me because i've been binge-watching a lot of netflix lately 📺 still, 100 Nights of Hero's visuals are def one of its strongest points 💁‍♀️ what about you guys? 👀

I think I saw this movie 3 months ago 🤔 and I was kinda meh about it too... The thing is, Felicity Jones' narration is so strong, but then it feels like the rest of the film doesn't deliver on that promise 😐. They had some great moments with Emma Corrin's character Hero, but it felt like they were only scratching the surface. And don't even get me started on how underutilized Amir El-Masry's character was 🤷‍♂️. The visuals are definitely stunning, though - I mean, those dollhouse scenes were straight fire 🔥. But overall, it just feels like a missed opportunity...

I was really looking forward to this movie 🤔 but it just didn't deliver for me. I mean, who doesn't love a good fantasy romance? The cast was amazing, Felicity Jones and Emma Corrin were so great together 🌹 But what I loved the most about the movie's concept was how it explored themes of feminism and queer relationships 💖. It felt like it had so much potential but the execution just fell flat for me. The storyline was kinda confusing and hard to follow, especially towards the end 🤯. And yeah, the visuals were stunning, but that wasn't enough to make up for the rest of the movie's lackluster moments 😐. Overall, I'm sad it didn't live up to my expectations because I really wanted to love it ❤️

🤔 I don't get why they're criticizing the film for being too subtle 🙅‍♂️. Can't we appreciate art that's not just loud and flashy like some politicians' speeches 💁‍♀️? The visuals are gorgeous, but is it really the director's job to "ignite" themes or make them more "passionate"? Isn't that what the actors should bring to the table 🤷‍♂️? And by the way, who gets to decide what's considered a "feminist theme" in a movie anyway? 🤔 It just feels like another example of Hollywood trying to police itself and dictate what art is acceptable 💁‍♀️. Can't we just enjoy a film for its own sake without analyzing it to death? 😒

omg i'm so disappointed in this movie 100 Nights of Hero has such a great premise but it just falls flat the storytelling is all over the place and it feels like they're trying too hard to fit in all these queer themes and feminist messages without really exploring them properly the visuals are gorgeous tho but that's about it for me i mean felicity jones narrating at the beginning was so cool but then she's just kinda... there the rest of the time and emma corrin as hero is so underrated because her character deserves so much more development than we get

OMG, I was really hyped for this movie, fam! 🤔 But honestly, it felt like they just phoned it in? The story's so rich and interesting, but they didn't do it justice. I love that it explores feminist themes and queer pairings, but they needed to do more with it. It's like, the visuals are straight fire 🔥, but the storytelling is just meh. And don't even get me started on how they handled Hero's stories - it was like they were teasing us with something, but never actually delivered. 😐 I mean, I love Felicity Jones and Emma Corrin, but together they felt more like they were in a competition to see who could be the most introverted. 🤷‍♀️

🤔 i mean, can we really pinpoint what went wrong here? like, they had this incredible setup - a fantasy romance with a queer reimagining of Scheherazade and all that jazz... but did they truly live up to the hype? 🤷‍♀️ it feels like they just skimmed the surface, leaving us wanting more. i think what really hurts is how the film tries to tackle these heavy themes of love, companionship, and feminism... but in a way that's so... safe. where's the real passion? the fire under the surface? 🌡️ we get this gorgeous visuals, sure, but it's just window dressing. we need something more than just pretty pictures to make us feel like we're truly experiencing the story. 💔

I'm so underwhelmed by "100 Nights of Hero" 🤕... I mean, I love Felicity Jones, Emma Corrin, and Amir El-Masry - they're all amazing, but even their chemistry can't make up for the lackluster storytelling 😐. The film had some really cool ideas about female power and queer relationships, but it just never quite delivers on them 🤷‍♀️. And don't even get me started on how underutilized Maika Monroe's character is - I feel like she's stuck in this passive role from the start 💔. I was expecting so much more from a film with such a talented cast and a premise that sounds like it could be really special 🤞. Maybe I just had too high of hopes, but for me, "100 Nights of Hero" feels like a total letdown 😒.

I gotta say, I was hyped for this movie at first, like when "The Hunger Games" came out back in 2012 🤩. But now that I've seen it, I'm just kinda meh about it. I mean, Felicity Jones is always a plus, but even she can't save this messy story from itself 🙅‍♀️. The special effects are super pretty, like when "The Lord of the Rings" came out in 2001 and we were all blown away by Gollum's designs 💥. But it feels like they're just skimming over the surface instead of really diving into the world-building. And don't even get me started on how the story meanders along, like when "Harry Potter" was still trying to figure out its own pacing in the early books 🧙‍♂️. All in all, I'd say it's a decent watch but not the epic fantasy romp I thought it would be 😐

I went into this movie expecting it to be like one of those swoony rom-coms but honestly it fell flat for me 🤕 The fantasy part was super pretty but felt kinda tacked on and didn't really add anything to the story. And don't even get me started on how slow the pacing was - I zoned out like 3 times during the parts where Hero was telling her stories 💤 I think the movie had some great themes going for it, like feminism and queerness, but it just didn't quite make it work 🚫

🤔 i think the problem with this movie is it tries to cram too much in at once. like, hello we get it, hero's got some wild stories to tell 📚 but instead of letting us just vibe out to those tales, the film keeps trying to tie everything back to the 'mystery' of the secret society thing. newsflash: it doesn't need that plot thread 💁‍♀️ and honestly, i was kinda invested in felicity jones as the voice of cherry 🤗 but she gets pushed aside a lot in favor of hero's stories. and yeah, the visuals are def gorgeous, but they're not enough to make up for how meh the rest of it feels 😐

omg i was so hyped for this movie 🤩 but it kinda fell flat for me too 🤔 felicity jones as narrator tho 💁‍♀️ maika monroe and emma corrin had some amazing chemistry btw 💕 cant wait to see them in another project soon! 🎥 the visuals were insane though 🌸 i mean who wouldn't want to watch a story of love and magic unfold on screen? 😍 only wish it was more fleshed out 🤗

I'm really disappointed in this movie 🤔. I thought it was gonna be like a magical, fantastical world, but it just felt like a bunch of pretty pictures strung together 📸. The storytelling was so meh, I couldn't even keep track of who was supposed to be the hero and what was going on 🙃. And don't even get me started on how it barely explored its themes of feminism and queerness 🤷‍♀️. It just seemed like a bunch of cool ideas floating around without any real depth or substance 💧. I mean, I love Felicity Jones as an actress, but she was wasted in this role 😔. Overall, it felt like the filmmakers were more interested in looking pretty than actually telling a good story 📺.

🤔 I gotta say, I was super hyped for this movie but it totally fell flat for me 😐. The plot was so disjointed and hard to follow - like, what's up with Hero's stories? They're supposed to be these epic tales that bring the house down, but instead they just kinda... exist 🤷‍♀️. And don't even get me started on how underdeveloped the characters are 👀. I mean, Felicity Jones as the narrator is a total game-changer, but the rest of the cast gets so little to do 🤦‍♀️.

I think what really killed it for me was that the themes of feminism and queerness just felt kinda... tacked on 🙅‍♂️. Like, they're trying to make this big statement, but it's not even explored in a way that feels authentic or meaningful 💔. And those visuals? Gorgeous, yeah 👏, but they can't save the whole movie from its lackluster storytelling 😐.

All in all, I'm just disappointed 'cause I was really hoping for more 🤕. Maybe I'll give it another watch when it comes out on streaming or something, but as a one-time viewing experience? Nope 🚫

I'm so underwhelmed by this one... I mean, who wouldn't wanna watch Felicity Jones as the narrator or Emma Corrin as Hero? But the whole thing just feels like a bunch of pretty pictures and not enough substance 📺💔 The storytelling's all over the place and it's hard to get invested in Cherry's life when we're spending most of our time stuck inside her head with Hero's tales 😴. Don't even get me started on how they missed an opportunity to really dive into those feminist themes - or the queer pairings, for that matter 💁‍♀️. Maybe I'm just being harsh, but 100 Nights of Hero feels like a cinematic tease rather than a fully formed film 🤔👀
