Jack and the Beanstalk review – 'moooosical' caper gives the cow's eye view

A fresh take on a classic tale has taken centre stage, with Caroline and the Beanstalk reimagining Jack and the Beanstalk for the modern age. But don't be fooled by the title - this isn't your grandmother's fairy story. Instead, it's a high-stakes caper starring a plucky cow named Caroline, played to perfection by Suzie McAdam.

When Caroline joins Jack's family, she quickly becomes an integral part of their lives, providing them with a steady supply of milk for their artisanal ice cream brand, Glen and Sherry's. But as the business fails, Caroline finds herself in a petting zoo, forced to hatch an escape plan with some unlikely accomplices - a hen, llama, and pig.

In Stephen Whitson's production, the show comes alive thanks to a talented 10-strong cast and the booming voice of Brian Cox as the giant. However, this shift in emphasis has come at the expense of the original story's magic. Gone are the sense of wonder and terror that once defined Jack and the Beanstalk. Instead, we're left with a meandering caper about a single-minded cow, marred by cynicism and poor decision-making from the human characters.

The show's attempt to teach lessons through exposition feels heavy-handed, and many of the songs - an Americana-influenced collection that ranges from Broadway to vaudeville to rap - only serve to delay the action. Even so, those numbers are undeniably lively, with crisp choreography by Lisa Darnell and gorgeous harmonies under Isaac Savage's musical direction.

Despite its flaws, Caroline and the Beanstalk has built a showbiz illusion of something greater being at stake. McAdam shines in her power ballad Udderly Alone, complete with key change and all. The production will continue to run at Dundee Rep until December 30th, but it's unclear if this fresh take on a classic tale is enough to justify its existence.

I don't know, I just feel like they're trying too hard to make something modern and relatable out of an old story 🤔. I mean, I love the talent involved - Suzie McAdam's performance as Caroline is really impressive 💁‍♀️ - but it feels like they've lost sight of what made the original so magical. The sense of wonder and fear that comes with a classic tale just doesn't feel the same here 🌫️.

And yeah, I'm not sure about the lessons being hammered home through exposition - it feels kinda heavy-handed 💔. But at the same time, those numbers are catchy! The choreography is top-notch, and I love how they incorporated different styles to make it unique 🎶. Maybe the production just needs a bit of fine-tuning to get it right?

I gotta say, I'm intrigued by the reimagining of Jack and the Beanstalk, but it feels like they've lost some of that timeless magic in the process. I mean, I love Suzie McAdam's performance as Caroline - she brings a lot of sass to the role! But at times, I felt like the human characters were just going through the motions. And those songs? They're definitely catchy, but sometimes I felt like they were used more for show than substance. The giant's booming voice is still great though 🤩. Overall, it's a solid production, but I'm not sure if it's enough to make me want to see it again anytime soon... maybe just for that power ballad 😂

I'm not sure about this one 😐. I mean, the cast is super talented and Brian Cox as the giant is always a bonus 🤣. But the story just doesn't feel like "Jack and the Beanstalk" anymore. It's like they took all the magic and wonder out of it and replaced it with...well, not much 😔. The cow is cool and all, but I'm still rooting for Jack and the original tale 🐂💫

I'm so over this reimagining of Jack and the Beanstalk 🙄. I mean, who thought putting a cow in the lead role was a good idea? It's just a bunch of nonsense trying to pass off as art. The original story had magic, it had wonder, and it had terror - what did we get instead? A meandering mess about a cow with delusions of grandeur 🤯. And don't even get me started on the "lessons" they tried to cram in there like they were spoon-feeding us or something 🙄. I swear, this show is just trying to be all edgy and cool but really it's just a mess 🤪. Give me the original any day of the week 💫

OMG, I'm so stoked for this modern retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk 🤩! Suzie McAdam as Caroline is absolutely udderly fantastic 🐮😍 - she brings so much sass and personality to the role! The addition of a cow as the main character is genius 👏. I love how they've incorporated elements of social commentary, like the artisanal ice cream brand and the petting zoo plot twist 🤯. It's like they're saying, "Hey, we can still have fun and teach valuable lessons at the same time!" 🎉.

But, I gotta say, the pacing can be a bit wonky at times ⏱️. Some of the songs do feel like they're dragging out the action, but hey, who doesn't love a good musical number, right? 🎶 The cast is talented, and Brian Cox as the giant is absolute perfection 😮. Overall, I'm loving this fresh take on a classic tale! Let's see if it can run for longer than just 6 weeks ⏰!

OMG, I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing 🤯... I mean, who thought it was a good idea to put a cow as the main character in Jack and the Beanstalk? It's like they took all the magic out of the original story and replaced it with a bunch of animals trying to escape from a petting zoo 🐄🚫. Don't get me wrong, Suzie McAdam is talented and all, but I just can't help feeling like this whole thing is missing something... maybe that's just me, though 😅?

idk why ppl think this "caroline and the beanstalk" thing is a good idea 🤔... i mean, it's just a lazy retelling of jack and the beanstalk with a cow instead of jack. it's all about the money now - a single-minded cow (lol) who thinks she can save the day? pls, it's like they took every cliche from a fairy tale and mashed them together into this messy, meandering show 🙄... and don't even get me started on the songs, they're just there to fill space while the plot stalls 🎵... but hey, i guess suzie mcadam is alright in her big number 😒

i'm not sure what's more cringeworthy, the fact that they're trying to pass off a cow as the new jack in this adaptation or the complete lack of originality - it's like they took every decent idea from the original story and replaced everything with 'cows are cool now' nonsense. i mean, what's next? a show about a talking eggplant? 🥔 the cast tries its best, but even suzie mcadam can't save this mess from itself. the music is probably the most enjoyable part of the whole production, but that's like saying the sprinkles on your ice cream are the best part - they're just trying to distract you from the fact that it's all just a bit rubbish 🤣

meh 🤔 I went to see Caroline and the Beanstalk last week and I'm still trying to figure out what it was all about 💭 The cow, Caroline, just sorta exists in the story and then suddenly she's leading this whole escape plan thingy 🐄🏃‍♀️ without much build up or motivation from her side of the coin. And don't even get me started on how they handled the giant 🤯 Brian Cox's voice is still pretty cool though, I'll give it that 👍

I mean, I love the whole idea of reimagining classic tales for the modern age, but Caroline and the Beanstalk just didn't quite work out for me 🤔. Don't get me wrong, Suzie McAdam as Caroline was amazing - her voice is literally udderly stunning! 👏 But the whole thing felt like it was missing that special something that makes Jack and the Beanstalk so beloved. The pacing was all over the place, with too much focus on exposition and not enough on the magic of the story itself 📚.

And I agree with you, the songs were definitely a highlight - Lisa Darnell's choreography was fire 🔥! But even with all that talent, it felt like they were trying to cram too many messages into this show. It wasn't just about Caroline escaping the petting zoo, but also about teaching us lessons on teamwork and perseverance 🤝.

I think what really let the show down was how much they relied on Brian Cox's booming voice as the giant - it was just a bit too much 😂. But hey, at least it kept me entertained, and I loved the effort that went into creating this fresh take on a classic tale 👏.

I just saw the trailer for Caroline & the Beanstalk 🤠 and I'm not sure what to think 🤔... The plot sounds kinda whack 🤪 but I guess that's the point of reimagining a classic, right? 😐 I mean, Suzie McAdam as a cow in a petting zoo is pretty funny 🐮, but at the same time it feels like they took all the magic out of the original story 🌕... Still, I'll be checking it out when it comes to Dundee Rep on Dec 30th 🎟️... [https://www.dunderep.org/whats-on/c...erep.org/whats-on/caroline-and-the-beanstalk)

idk about this one lol 🤔 they're tryin' to reimagine Jack & the Beanstalk with a cow as the main character and its just not feelin right 😐 i mean, what happened to the magic of the original story? now it's all about some cow makin' poor decisions and gettin' rescued by her animal friends 🤷‍♀️ and dont even get me started on those annoying songs 🎶 they need to work on the storytelling a bit more

lol what's up with all these reimagined fairy tales? like can't we just leave the classics alone? 🤷‍♂️ anyway i was thinking about trying out that new ice cream place downtown, have you tried Glen and Sherry's yet? they got this flavor called 'honeycomb heaven' that sounds pretty interesting... also did you know that pigs are actually pretty smart? like way more intelligent than people give them credit for 🐖

OMG, I'm so confused about this whole Caroline and the Beanstalk thing 🤔... I mean, I love a good reimagining as much as the next person, but honestly, can't they just stick with the original story? It's what made Jack and the Beanstalk so magical in the first place 🔮. Now it's all about this cow who's just kinda... meh 🐄. And don't even get me started on the songs - I mean, I love a good musical number as much as the next person, but when are they going to make sense? It feels like they're trying too hard to be edgy and hip 🤷‍♀️. But hey, Suzie McAdam is definitely bringing her A-game to that power ballad 😍...

🤔 I'm not sure about this one... I mean, I get the whole "modernizing" thing, but does it really need to be so... corny? 🌽 The original story was all about the thrill of the beanstalk and the giant's lair - now it's just a bunch of misfit animals trying to escape. And what's up with the song numbers? They sound like they belong in a bad musical comedy 😂. I mean, I loved Suzie McAdam's performance as Caroline though! She totally nailed that power ballad 💖. Still, I'm not sure if this "fresh take" is just rehashing old ideas without adding anything new 🤷‍♀️.

idk what's up w/ these modern retellings of classics... just wanna see the original magic & wonder left in 😒 they're tryin' too hard 2 make it relatable 4 now, but honestly, less is more 💁‍♀️ this cow Caroline seems cool n all, but she's not a patch on jack 🐮♂️ the music sounds like a bunch of random genres thrown together 🎵 & the choreo? who cares 🤷‍♀️ maybe I'm just an old soul, but sometimes u just wanna be transported 2 another world 😴

I gotta say, I'm kinda underwhelmed by this reimagining of Jack and the Beanstalk 🤔. I mean, don't get me wrong, Suzie McAdam's got some serious pipes on her, and that power ballad Udderly Alone? Give me chills every time 😍. But for me, it feels like they took all the magic out of the original story and replaced it with a bunch of cynicism and poor life choices from the humans 🙄.

And can we talk about how the show's trying to teach us lessons through exposition? It feels so heavy-handed, like they're hitting us over the head with a spoon 🥊. I mean, I get what they're trying to say, but it doesn't feel natural or organic to the story at all.

That being said, the cast is definitely talented, and that musical direction by Isaac Savage? Fire 🔥. And hey, if you're into Americana-influenced tunes and vaudeville vibes, then I guess this show might be up your alley 🎵.

For me, though, it's like they're trying to rebrand a classic tale with a bunch of modern trappings instead of actually doing something new and exciting 🔒. Maybe I'm just not buying it 😐?

I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed with this reimagining of Jack and the Beanstalk 🤔... like what happened to the magic? The cow Caroline is definitely cute though 😊, but she's got some serious issues, you know? She's all about that artisanal ice cream life, but when things go south, she just becomes a meek little cow 🐮. And don't even get me started on the giant - Brian Cox's booming voice is always a winner 🤩! But overall, I'm not sure if this one's gonna make it to the top 📈... the showbiz illusion thingy doesn't quite land for me 😐. Still, McAdam shines in that power ballad, and those harmonies are 🔥! Maybe give it another shot?

I'm underwhelmed by the reimagining of Jack and the Beanstalk, Caroline and the Beanstalk just doesn't live up to its promise 🤔. The shift in focus from a timeless fairy tale to a high-stakes caper feels forced and results in a narrative that's more contrived than captivating. The addition of a plucky cow as the protagonist is an interesting twist, but Suzie McAdam's performance is let down by a script that relies too heavily on exposition 📚. The show's attempt to inject modern lessons into the story comes across as heavy-handed and overly simplistic. On the other hand, the musical numbers are indeed lively and well-executed 👏.
