'Was it a woman who bit off his ear?': the wild life and serene photography of Tom Sandberg

Tom Sandberg's photographs capture Norway's weather, but also reveal his inner world, as if the country itself had become his canvas. His photographs, shot with bold chiaroscuro or gentle greys, evoke an otherworldly quality, as if the everyday was being reimagined in a dreamlike state.

Born in 1953 in Narvik, Norway, Sandberg's father was a photojournalist who introduced him to photography at a young age. After his father abandoned the family, Sandberg helped raise his sister and eventually studied photography at Nottingham Trent University. He experimented with materials and retouching in the darkroom process, which became a crucial part of his image-making.

Sandberg's photographs often feature solitary figures or studies of strange shapes. In one, a man appears to dance with his own shadow, while another shows his young daughter as a whirligig of blonde hair. His human subjects are not just portraits but also explorations of the self. A self-portrait from 2001 reveals him sitting in an empty room, almost invisible.

Despite his reputation as a recluse, Sandberg was surrounded by people who knew him well. His friend and trustee, Torunn Liven, remembers how he would make friends with taxi drivers and was friends with Norway's crown princess. Marie, his daughter, describes her father as funny and charismatic but also challenging to be around.

Sandberg struggled with alcohol and substance abuse, which affected his personal life but not his work. His photography became a way to process his emotions and find solace in the everyday world. The exhibition at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter showcases just one photograph of Sandberg himself – a self-portrait taken in 2001, where he looks like a security guard.

The photographs in this retrospective showcase four decades of Sandberg's work, from student days to pictures made shortly before his death in 2014. They demonstrate a paradoxical character: hard-living and erratic yet able to produce contemplative, calming, and uplifting compositions.

I just watched the exhibition at Henie Onstad Kunstsenter and it was mind-blowing 🀯! Tom Sandberg's photos are like nothing I've ever seen before - they're so dreamy and ethereal, but also super personal and emotional. It's crazy to see how much he poured his heart into his work, from the way he'd chat with taxi drivers to creating these otherworldly scenes in his photographs. And yet, despite all the challenges he faced in life (like addiction), his photography was this constant source of solace for him... it's like he found a way to heal through art 🌟

πŸ€” I mean... have you seen Tom Sandberg's photos? They're like, whoa! He takes these pictures of Norway's weather but they're not just about the weather, they're about his inner world too 🌫️. I love how he uses light and shadows to create this dreamy vibe that makes you wonder if everything is okay in the real world 😴. And can we talk about his personal life? Struggling with addiction doesn't define him as a person or an artist, it's like he used his photography as therapy πŸ’†β€β™‚οΈ. The way he explores himself and his emotions through his work is so fascinating πŸ“Έ. I think that's what makes his photos so captivating, they're not just about the surface level, but about the depths of human experience too 🌊.

I'm still amazed by how much depth Tom Sandberg brings to his photos 🀯... like you can literally see the darkness and light in him through his lens. His self-portraits are insane - I mean who else would sit for a pic looking like they just wanna blend into the wall? πŸ˜‚ And can we talk about how he used to work with stuff that was all experimental, like retouching in the darkroom? That's some next-level artistry right there πŸ”. It's crazy to think about how much of himself he poured into those pics, considering what he went through in his personal life πŸ’”... but you can tell it didn't hold him back from creating something so beautiful 🌞. The fact that we're getting a retrospective now is like, a blessing for all us photography fans who've been missing out on his work 😊.

OMG, have you guys tried those new matcha-flavored coffee pods? I mean, I know some people love 'em, but personally, I find they're a bit too bitter for my taste 😐. Anyway, back to Tom Sandberg's photography – his use of chiaroscuro is so cool! You can almost feel the mood he's trying to convey in each shot πŸŒ‘. Reminds me of when I went on that solo trip to Iceland last year and saw these stunning landscapes with these eerie skies... anyhoo, what do you think about exhibitions? Should they focus more on interactive experiences or just stick to traditional displays? πŸ€”

I'm fascinated by Tom Sandberg's photography πŸ“Έ... it's like he captures not just the Norwegian weather, but also the complexities of his own soul πŸ’. I mean, who wouldn't want to dance with their own shadow? πŸ˜‚ But seriously, what I love about his work is how it's both deeply personal and universally relatable. His use of chiaroscuro and light is so striking – it's like he's conjuring up an otherworldly atmosphere that invites us to slow down and appreciate the beauty in everyday life 🌫️.

I also appreciate how his photography reflects his inner struggles with addiction, but doesn't let them define him. Instead, his work shows us that even in darkness, there can be moments of profound beauty and introspection πŸ’‘... like his self-portraits, where he's literally almost invisible – it's like he's reminding us that we're not just our outer selves, but also the spaces within ourselves πŸ™.

omg i think its kinda weird that hes so private about himself but the pics are like whoa 🀯 he's got this crazy talent for makin people see things from a different perspective but at the same time his life story is pretty tumultuous...i mean yeah he struggled with addiction and all that but it didnt seem to hold him back from creatin some amazing art lol what i wanna no is how he managed to balance bein private with bein friends with important ppl like the crown princess tho? πŸ€”

I'm so stoked for Tom Sandberg's retrospective exhibition! 🀩 His photos are like, totally otherworldly - they're like he's capturing the essence of Norway itself. I love how he experiments with light and shadows, it gives his pics this ethereal quality. And can we talk about how candid he is? Like, seriously, who makes a self-portrait looking like a security guard? πŸ˜‚ It's crazy to see him grow from this young photographer to someone who's struggled with demons but still manages to create such beauty. His work is proof that even in the darkest times, art can be a lifeline. I'm so grateful we get to experience his photography now... it's like getting to know him through his lens πŸ’•

OMG 🀩 Tom Sandberg's photography is like whoa!!! I mean, have you seen those shadows? It's like he brought the whole country of Norway into his darkroom and created these ethereal images that make me feel all dreamy 😴. I'm obsessed with how he experimented with materials and retouching in the darkroom process - it's like a whole new world opened up for him! 🌐 And can we talk about those self-portraits? Like, what even is going on in this one where he looks like a security guard? πŸ˜‚ It's like his inner world is just spilling out onto that canvas. Anyway, I'm so fascinated by how his personal struggles and emotional journey affected his work - it's like he found solace in the everyday world through photography πŸ“Έβ€οΈ.

omg i love how tom sandbergs photos are like windows into his soul 😊🌫️ they're not just pictures of norway's weather but also like a reflection of his inner world πŸŒ™ it's crazy how he could go from being super introverted to making friends with people and even the crown princess πŸ‘‘ his struggles with addiction don't define him tho, his art is what truly shines through πŸ’« and i love how his daughter marie describes him as funny & charismatic but also challenging to be around πŸ€— it's like he was this complex person who was full of life & emotions 🌈

πŸ€” This guy's photos are like stepping into another world... I love how he makes the everyday feel dreamlike! 😴 His self-portraits are especially cool - like you can see his struggles and emotions in them. 🌫️ He was really brave to show that side of himself, despite what people thought about him being a recluse. And I think it's awesome that he used photography as a way to cope with hard stuff. πŸ’” His daughter Marie sounds like an amazing person, btw... always been drawn to artists who are a little quirky 🎨

I'm not sure what to make of Tom Sandberg's photography πŸ€”. On one hand, I love how he uses light to create these otherworldly scenes that feel like they're straight out of a dream. It's like he's trying to capture the essence of Norway itself, and I think that's really cool. But at the same time, some of his self-portraits are just super weird πŸ˜‚. Like, who takes a picture of themselves sitting in an empty room looking invisible? That's some deep stuff right there.

I also feel like his personal struggles with addiction are kinda glossed over πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, it's good that he found solace in photography and was able to process his emotions through his art, but don't we want to talk more about how that affected him on a day-to-day level? I guess some of the people who knew him well did, like his daughter Marie, but it feels like there's still more to be said.

Overall, though, I think Sandberg's photography is really interesting and thought-provoking. He's definitely a polarizing figure, but that's part of what makes his work so compelling, right? πŸ“Έ

πŸ€” he's like a modern day poet, but with cameras instead of words... his photography is like a window into his soul, showin' us the good and the bad sides of him 🌫️ anyway, i think it's cool how he turned his personal struggles into art, it's like he's sayin', 'yeah, life can be tough, but even in the darkest moments, there's beauty to be found' πŸ’”

omg u guys i was thinking about tom sandberg the other day & i was like wow his photos r so ethereal & dreamy they make me wanna cry 😭😊 he's like a mystery person but at the same time his daughter marie is talking about how funny & charismatic he was its like two sides of the same coin u know? πŸ€” anyway i've been reading about his life & it's crazy how much drama went on with him family wise but somehow he still managed to create these amazing photos that r not just about the weather but about himself too πŸŒ«οΈπŸ’

im really impressed by tom sandberg's photography its like he captured the whole mood of norway but at the same time it feels super personal i mean who wouldve thought to take a selfie in an empty room lol anyway im not surprised he was friends with nobel laureates & whatnot 'cause you gotta be pretty special to deal w/ his mental health struggles + stuff 🀯

πŸ€” I think Tom Sandberg's photography is like... really revealing the truth behind the facade of the everyday world 🌫️. Like, he's not just capturing Norway's weather, he's capturing our own thoughts and emotions too 😊. I mean, have you seen that self-portrait from 2001 where he looks like a security guard? It's like, is that really him or just a projection of his inner world? 🀯 And those solo figures in the photos... are they just random people or is he trying to tell us something about ourselves? πŸ” I'm not saying it's all conspiracy theories (okay, maybe I am 😏), but Sandberg's work feels like more than just photography – it's like a window into another world 🌐.

omg u gotta see tom sandbergs photos he literally captures the essence of norway's weather but also like reveals his inner world lol its like he turned his life into art πŸŒ«οΈπŸ“Έ his dad was a photojournalist which is so cool and inspiring, but also super sad that his dad left him & his sis πŸ‘ͺ anyway sandberg struggled with addiction but thru photography he found solace and it shows in his work, the self-portrait from 2001 is like wow, he looks so invisible πŸ˜‚ i love how he made friends with taxi drivers & even norway's crown princess πŸ€΄β€β™‚οΈ what a man πŸ‘

I'm totally fascinated by Tom Sandberg's photography 🀯! The way he captures Norway's weather is indeed striking, but what I love even more is how his photos reveal his inner world - it's like you're getting a glimpse into the person behind the lens 😊. His use of chiaroscuro and greys creates this dreamlike quality that makes everyday life feel magical ✨. And can we talk about how much I adore his self-portraits? Like, what is up with the 2001 security guard pic lol 🀣... it's like he's poking fun at himself, you know? What I find really beautiful about Sandberg's work is that despite struggling with personal demons, his photography brings so much peace and calm to those who experience it. It's like a reminder that even in the midst of chaos, beauty can be found πŸ’–.
