A first look at Google’s Project Aura glasses built with Xreal

Google's latest attempt at making augmented reality (AR) glasses, Project Aura, is starting to look like a solid contender in the industry. The device was recently demoed by the author, who got hands-on experience with the sleek and chunky prototype. The most striking thing about Project Aura? It's essentially a headset masquerading as glasses.

The device has several impressive features, including a 70-degree field of view, wireless connectivity to Android devices, and support for Google's Gemini AI assistant. In fact, everything the author tried on the device had originally been developed for Samsung's Galaxy XR headset, showing that Xreal can tap into existing tech without having to start from scratch.

One of the most significant advantages of Project Aura is its compatibility with Android apps. This means that smaller players like Xreal can access apps developed for Samsung's headset, providing a level of interoperability that could give them an edge in the market. In contrast, Meta's hardware has struggled to gain traction due to limited app support.

The biggest question mark surrounding Project Aura is how well it will hold up to launch and user adoption. While the device seems promising on paper, there are concerns about its ability to avoid past mistakes made by Google with its original Glass project. However, Xreal CEO Chi Xu argues that partnering with other companies like Uber and Warby Parker can help them overcome these challenges.

Ultimately, Project Aura is a breath of fresh air in an industry dominated by giants like Meta and Apple. Its focus on interoperability and compatibility could give it a fighting chance to succeed where others have failed. One thing's for sure – this device has some big shoes to fill, but its potential is undeniable.

Lmao what's up with these AR glasses, they're so bulky 😂 I mean, can't we just get sleek and thin already? Project Aura does look solid tho, the fact that it's compatible with Android apps is a major win 🤩 but what about its battery life? Like, how long will you be able to wear this thing all day without dying 💀. And omg don't even get me started on the price, if it's gonna be one of those "premium" devices we're talkin' 💸. Can't wait to see how this thing shakes out 🤔

I'm kinda excited about Project Aura 🤔, but let's not get ahead of ourselves just yet. I mean, it does seem like Google is making a solid effort with the AR glasses, and the 70-degree field of view is definitely impressive. But, at the end of the day, we're still talking about a device that's essentially just a headset masquerading as glasses... 😂. And what's up with the fact that all those features were developed for Samsung's Galaxy XR headset? That does make it easier for Xreal to tap into existing tech, but it also raises questions about how much of their own R&D is actually going on.

And let's not forget the elephant in the room – user adoption and longevity 🙅‍♂️. Google's original Glass project was a total disaster, so we need to be careful not to make the same mistakes again. But at the same time, Xreal CEO Chi Xu's partnership with Uber and Warby Parker does seem like a smart move. Fingers crossed that they can avoid some of the pitfalls that other companies in this space have faced 💯.

🤔 I gotta say, Project Aura is looking pretty fire right now! I mean, the fact that it's using tech already developed by Samsung is a huge win for Xreal. It shows they're not reinventing the wheel, but rather building on what others have created. That compatibility with Android apps is a major game-changer - it could totally level the playing field for smaller players in the industry.

But, at the same time, I'm still kinda skeptical about how well it'll hold up to launch and user adoption. Google's got a history of messing up with AR tech (remember Glass? 😳), so it'll be interesting to see if they've learned from those mistakes this time around. Still, if Xreal can navigate those challenges, Project Aura could be the real deal.

I'm also loving the fact that they're partnering with companies like Uber and Warby Parker - that's some solid strategic thinking right there! And let's not forget about the potential for interoperability - it could open up a whole new world of possibilities for AR tech. Fingers crossed they can make it happen! 👏

I gotta say, I'm kinda excited about these new AR glasses... they look super sleek 🤖! I mean, who wouldn't want to see a whole new world in front of their eyes? And the fact that it can connect to Android devices and use Gemini AI assistant is like, totally awesome 💻. But at the same time, I'm a bit skeptical about how well it's gonna hold up in real life... my friend got those stupid Google Glass back in the day and they were just, like, super awkward 🙄. Still, if Xreal can learn from their mistakes and get some solid partnerships going on, who knows? This thing might just change the game 🔥

omg u guys i just tried out google's new ar glasses project aura and lol they're SO chunky!!! 🤣 but seriously the tech is insane 70 degree field of view wireless connectivity to android devices it's like having a mini computer on ur face 🤖 and i was thinking about how cool it would be to have access to all those apps without having to switch between my phone and headset 😂 like what if xreal just integrated with uber and warby parker and their whole ecosystem thingy?? that'd be crazy!!! 🤑

I'm so stoked to see Google trying again with Project Aura 🤩! Their approach of using existing tech from Samsung's Galaxy XR headset is genius 💡. I mean, who doesn't love the idea of not having to reinvent the wheel? It's all about collaboration and making things work together seamlessly, right?

And can we talk about how awesome it is that Project Aura supports Android apps? That's like, a total game-changer for indie devs 📱! I've seen so many cool projects come and go because of the lack of support for smaller platforms. This could be the wake-up call they need to get more apps made specifically for AR glasses.

Now, I'm totally curious about how well this thing will hold up in real life 🤔. We've all been there, right? You get excited about a new tech gadget, and then it's just...meh after a while 😐. But if they can avoid the mistakes of Glass 1.0 (RIP, Google), I think Project Aura could be something special 🔥!

I'm kinda hyped about Project Aura 🤩 - Google's AR glasses seem like they're finally hitting the nail on the head! 🎯 The fact that it can connect wirelessly to Android devices and support Gemini AI assistant is a major win. I mean, who wouldn't want to experience immersive AR with seamless app integration? 📱 It's also interesting to see Xreal partnering up with companies like Uber and Warby Parker - hopefully they can avoid the mistakes of Google's original Glass project 💡. The compatibility factor alone could give Project Aura a leg up on the competition, but we'll have to wait and see how it performs in the real world 🕰️. One thing's for sure, it's about time someone shook things up in this industry! 😎

I'm kinda hyped about Google's Project Aura! I mean, who wouldn't want to try out AR glasses that can actually do something new and innovative? The fact that it's compatible with Android apps is a huge win for smaller players like Xreal. They don't have to start from scratch and develop their own whole ecosystem, they can just tap into what already exists.

I'm also loving the design of the thing - sleek and chunky sounds like a solid combo to me! And I'm curious about how it'll hold up in real life vs just looking cool on paper. Chi Xu's strategy with partnering with big companies is definitely worth watching, that could be the key to overcoming some of the challenges Google faced with Glass.

It's funny you mention Meta's struggles with app support... I feel like we've been seeing that with a lot of other tech companies lately too! But hey, at least Project Aura has some momentum going into 2025

OMG, I'm so down for Project Aura 🤩! Like, who wouldn't want AR glasses that can seamlessly integrate with their existing Android phone? It's genius how Xreal is leveraging existing tech instead of trying to reinvent the wheel from scratch. And let's be real, compatibility is key when it comes to user adoption – I mean, who wants to start over on a new platform every time they want to try out a new app? 😂 The fact that Uber and Warby Parker are backing this project gives me hope that Xreal can avoid the mistakes of Glass and really make a splash in the market. Can't wait to see how this all plays out! 🤔

idk why people still got faith in Google 🤔 they've been messing around with AR glasses since like 2010 and what do we got? A bunch of prototypes that never make it to market 🚫 Project Aura might be solid, but I'm not buying the hype yet 🤑 what's up with all these big companies trying to copy each other's tech instead of innovating 🤯 Xreal might have a chance if they don't get too caught up in playing catch-up 🏃‍♂️ and btw 70-degree field of view is still pretty limited 😐

lol I mean I'm low-key hyped about Project Aura! It's like Google's finally caught up with everyone else in the AR game 🤯. The fact that it can tap into existing tech without having to start from scratch is a huge win for them. And the fact that it's compatible with Android apps means smaller companies like Xreal can finally play in the big leagues 👊. I'm also loving the whole headset-in-glasses disguise - who wouldn't want a fancy new ' specs' to upgrade their daily routine 💻? My only concern is that they gotta deliver on user adoption, because if it's gonna be another Google Glass experience... no thanks 😐. But with Uber and Warby Parker on board, I'm feeling more optimistic about this thing 🤞

omg I'm so hyped about Project Aura 🤩! I mean, who wouldn't want AR glasses that can seamlessly connect with their Android phone? 📱 The fact that Xreal is partnering with companies like Uber and Warby Parker is a genius move - it's gonna make the device super appealing to users 💁‍♀️. And let's be real, Meta's hardware has been meh for ages 😐. This could be the game changer we've been waiting for in the AR space! 🚀

I'm loving how Google is finally bringing AR glasses to the table! 📱💻 I mean, who wouldn't want to ditch those clunky phone screens and just use their face to interact with info? Project Aura seems like a solid effort, especially if they can tap into that existing tech from Samsung's Galaxy XR headset. The fact that it's compatible with Android apps is a huge win – smaller players like Xreal can finally compete with the big boys! 🤩 My only concern is whether Google can avoid the pitfalls of their original Glass project (RIP). But hey, partnering with companies like Uber and Warby Parker sounds like a solid strategy. Fingers crossed it does well on launch day! 💪
