As Christmas approaches, residents of Philadelphia are coming together to help those in need. Throughout December, several local organizations are accepting food, clothes, and gift donations to support individuals struggling with poverty.
For food, Share Food Program stocks pantries, community fridges, and other resources throughout the city, accepting raw produce, protein, pantry staples, cheese, and used clothing. Meanwhile, Broad Street Love provides meals and medical services to residents in need, while Caring for Friends delivers meals and pantry staples to seniors in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Community Fridges across the city offer a convenient way for people to leave and take food as they please. Additionally, Northwest Mutual Aid Collective delivers fresh produce and dry goods to low-income residents and people with disabilities, accepting monetary donations and allowing donors to ship wish lists of food items through Amazon and Walmart.
For clothing, Cradles to Crayons is partnering with two local entities for coat drives this winter, while Project HOME accepts new and gently used sweatpants, T-shirts, underwear, socks, and shoes. The Everywhere Project needs clothing donations throughout the year, and One Warm Coat has a searchable map to find the nearest coat drive in neighborhoods.
Gift donors can support organizations such as St. Francis Inn, Lutheran Settlement House, and Operation Santa. St. Francis Inn provides food, clothing, and job services to the Kensington community, while Lutheran Settlement House helps people who are homeless or impacted by domestic violence. Operation Santa accepts new and unwrapped gifts for families and seniors.
The USPS also offers its annual Operation Santa event, where donors can select a person and send requested gifts through December 13. Philly People of Hope is collecting toys and small gift sets for adults until December 20.
