Bluesky Unveils Ambitious 2026 Roadmap to Take on X and Twitter
In a bid to build a formidable rival to Elon Musk's X platform, social media app Bluesky has revealed its ambitious 2026 development roadmap. According to the plan, the company aims to make its app feel more "live" by incorporating interactive features into feeds during live events.
"We're exploring new features and interactions within feeds that make them feel less like just scrolling through posts and more like hanging out," said Alex Benzer, product head at Bluesky. "We're also working on making the app feel more 'live' in general."
The company is experimenting with real-time and event-focused features, aiming to create a more immersive experience for users. While specifics are scarce, Bluesky is expected to continue exploring these innovations throughout the year.
Beyond enhancing the user experience, the 2026 roadmap also highlights improvements to basic features such as drafts, longer videos, faster video uploads, and better follow-suggestion algorithms. A dedicated team will be tasked with managing Bluesky's Discover feed, while topic tags are being explored to make it easier for users to find relevant posts and interests.
With around 1.5 million daily active users, Bluesky still has a long way to go before it matches the user base of X or Threads. However, by focusing on building for "live moments," the company aims to position itself as a refuge for X users who miss the pre-Musk era of Twitter.
As Benzer noted, "We need more sense-making these days. We miss having fun on the internet." Bluesky appears to be capitalizing on this sentiment, offering a platform where users can engage with each other without feeling trapped in an extractive propaganda machine owned by a billionaire.
