"Chefs do that": The underappreciated holiday joy of "The Long Kiss Goodnight"

For many of us, the holiday season means an onslaught of festive cheer – twinkling lights, warm cookies, and cozy movie nights with loved ones by the fire. But for some, it's a time-honored tradition that gets all the attention: baking from scratch.

As I load up my oven to whip up this year's batch of Christmas treats, I find myself gravitating towards a favorite holiday flick – one that defies expectations and celebrates the messy, imperfect joys of cooking and motherhood. "The Long Kiss Goodnight" (1996) may not be on everyone's radar, but for me, it's become an annual ritual.

This action-packed romp stars Geena Davis as Samantha Caine, a mild-mannered schoolteacher whose secret life is that of a deadly assassin. When the past and present collide, she must navigate her dual identities – all while whipping up a mean baked Alaska. Yes, you read that right: baked Alaska is the catalyst for an explosion of violence, laughter, and female empowerment.

The film's script, penned by Shane Black, masterfully balances witty one-liners with heartwarming moments of domesticity. For Samantha, cooking isn't just about nourishment – it's a form of self-care, a way to connect with her past while embracing the present. When she whips up a storm in the kitchen, donning an apron and trading banter with her partner, Hal (Tom Amandes), it's a testament to the transformative power of food.

In today's world, where artisanal products masquerade as homemade masterpieces, it's easy to lose sight of what truly matters. For many women, especially those in the kitchen, "The Long Kiss Goodnight" speaks directly to our experiences: the juggling act between roles, the pressure to perform, and the joy found in imperfection.

So, grab some popcorn, pour a glass of wine (or two), and indulge in this holiday classic. Who knows? You might just find yourself cheering on Charly Baltimore – aka Samantha Caine – as she takes down bad guys with equal panache and a mean sugar cookie.

I'm so done with all the pressure to make perfect baked goods for Christmas 🍪🎄. Like, what even is the point of having friends over if you're just gonna stress about your decorating skills or whoever eats the most cookies? My fave holiday movie "The Long Kiss Goodnight" always hits me in the feels - Samantha's all about embracing her messy sides and finding self-care in cooking. Can we please just make some ugly, burnt baked goods and call it a day? 🤪

I love that people have such strong feelings about the movies they watch during the holidays! I personally don't get to see this one much, but it sounds like it's got some awesome themes about female empowerment and cooking 🍰👩‍🍳 The idea that cooking can be a form of self-care is really interesting - I've definitely had times where whipping up something delicious helped me relax. And yeah, it's weird how often people try to make things seem more "homemade" than they actually are... anyway, hope you enjoy watching the movie! 😊

omg i love baked alaska 🍰🔥 so does charly baltimore lol what's with the oven on 12? can you make it at 350 tho? btw is geena davis still alive? and did samantha have a favorite holiday movie too? 🎬 i just wanna know more about her baking habits

I'm loving the festive vibes but let's be real, who needs all that commercialism when you can whip up some delicious baked goods and have a movie marathon 🍪🎥? I'm a total sucker for movies like "The Long Kiss Goodnight" – it's all about embracing imperfection and finding joy in the everyday moments. Can we please give Samantha Caine 👩‍🍳 more screen time? The way she balances cooking, self-care, and being an assassin? 💁‍♀️🔪 Total boss lady goals 🤩

I'm so done with the pressure to make perfect homemade Christmas treats every year 🙄! It's all about the joy of cooking and spending time with loved ones, not about creating Instagram-worthy masterpieces 😂. I love that this movie celebrates the messy, imperfect moments of motherhood and self-care – who needs a flawless baked Alaska when you can have a deliciously imperfect one? 🎨🍰

🍪 I'm not sure about this one... I love Geena Davis, but "The Long Kiss Goodnight" is an action movie? 🤔 It's definitely a classic chick flick, but I'm not sure it's the perfect holiday watch for everyone. Maybe it's too intense or violent for some people's taste. And while I can relate to the themes of female empowerment and self-care, I think the film's focus on assassin-dom might be a bit much during the holidays. 🎄 Let's just say I need something a little more... merry to get me in the mood! 😊

🍪🎄 omg have you tried those new instant mashed potatoes they came out with at Walmart last week? like i know some ppl love 'em but i was skeptical and now i'm hooked! they're literally just as good as makin' from scratch... kinda 🤔 but hey, who needs the hassle of butter and milk when u can just use a packet right? 🤷‍♀️ anyway back to the holiday season... have u seen those cute animated shorts on Netflix with the little girl cookin up a storm in her kitchen? so adorable! 👧

I love how "The Long Kiss Goodnight" has become a holiday tradition for you! 🎄🍪 It's awesome that you've found a movie that speaks to your experiences, especially the imperfections of cooking and motherhood. I mean, who hasn't had those messy moments in the kitchen? 😂 As much as I love baking, I'm more of a "buy from the store" kinda person myself... but hey, having fun with it is what matters! 🍰 What I do think is cool about this movie though, is how it shows Samantha embracing her dual identities and finding empowerment through cooking. That's something we can all get behind! 💪

🎄 I'm so down for a holiday movie night with some good old-fashioned action, comedy, and female empowerment! "The Long Kiss Goodnight" is such an underrated gem - who wouldn't want to see Geena Davis kick butt in the kitchen? 🍳 It's amazing how this 90s film still holds up today, celebrating the messy, imperfect joys of motherhood and cooking. Let's give it some love and make it a new holiday tradition! 💕

🤦‍♀️ I'm so over the new feature on my favorite streaming service that allows you to "enhance" your videos with AI-generated special effects 🎥😒 It's just a lazy way for them to try and make their content more appealing, but honestly, it's always going to look fake. Can't they just leave some of our content as is? 🙄 And don't even get me started on the fact that you can only customize this feature with their pre-approved options... where's the creativity in that? 🤔
