Civic Center BART station reopens after blown insulator causes fire and damages track, agency says

BART Station Reopens After Electrical Fire Causes Track Damage

The Civic Center BART station in San Francisco has reopened after an electrical fire on one of its tracks, according to the transit agency. The fire was caused by a blown insulator that made contact with the third rail, resulting in thick plumes of smoke and an explosion.

Crews from the San Francisco Fire Department arrived at the scene around 11:30 am and extinguished the fire using dry chemical. There were no injuries reported during the incident.

The BART system reported that one track would need to be repaired after the damage, but service resumed on the repaired track around 2 pm. Passengers were still stunned by the event, with some describing it as "wild" and "never seen anything like that before."

An investigation revealed that a 'foreign object' was discovered on the trackway, which came into contact with the third rail, sparking the fire. BART has not identified what the object was.

This incident comes after a series of disruptions in recent months, including issues related to vandalism and equipment problems. The Civic Center BART station is just one of several Bay Area stations that have been affected by track problems.

man this is crazy 🀯 electrical fires on train tracks are always so unpredictable they should really step up their safety checks btw I'm glad no one got hurt but can you imagine being stuck in a crowded BART station with smoke and flames everywhere? 😷 at least the repairs were done pretty quickly, just hope they find out what that foreign object was before something like this happens again πŸ’‘

I'm so glad they were able to reopen the Civic Center BART station, but this whole thing freaks me out 🀯. I mean, an electrical fire on a train track? That's like something out of a movie! And no one got hurt, which is definitely a positive, but can you imagine what could've happened if that fire had gotten worse?

This incident just makes me think about the state of our infrastructure and how it's being maintained. I know BART has been dealing with some issues lately, like vandalism and equipment problems, so this just adds to my concerns πŸ€”. We need to make sure that our public transportation systems are safe and reliable for everyone.

It's also interesting that they found a 'foreign object' on the trackway that caused the fire. I'm guessing it was probably something that got lost or dropped by a passenger, but how do you prevent those kinds of incidents from happening in the first place? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

can't believe they reopened that train station already 🀯 it's like they're gonna rush into everything without even thinking about safety lol what if there's more damage we don't know about? and what's with all these 'foreign objects' just lying around on the tracks? shouldn't they be super strict about this kinda thing? anyway, glad no one got hurt tho πŸ˜…

lol what's up with these electrical fires on the BART system?? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ like who leaves a foreign object just chillin' on the tracks waiting to cause chaos? and another thing, can't we get some better maintenance going on here? it's not like they're trying hard or anything... 1 track needs repair after that explosion? what if something else happens while they're working on it? πŸ€” BART's got some 'splainin' to do πŸ™„

Wow this is insane 🀯! I mean I've heard about electrical fires happening before but never on a train like that! Thankfully no one got hurt tho 😌, can't even imagine the scare factor right now. BART needs to get that track fixed ASAP though, it's not safe for anyone to be riding on that damaged part πŸš‚πŸ’¨. Glad they got it sorted out so quickly and everyone's back to normal πŸ‘!

Wow, can u believe that crazy electrical fire at the Civic Center BART station? 😱 I was like "what just happened?" when i saw the news... seems like a blown insulator caused the whole thing, and it was so intense that there were thick plumes of smoke and an explosion! 🀯 thankfully no one got hurt, but that's gotta be super scary for passengers. and now they're saying one track is damaged, so that's gonna cause some disruptions... hopefully they can get it fixed soon! πŸš‚πŸ‘

omg can u believe this happened at a bart station?! i mean i know electrical fires are bad but an explosion too? that's crazy! so they found out the fire was caused by a blown insulator and a foreign object on the trackway... i hope they figure out what the object was cuz it could be something we use everyday now. anyway, glad no one got hurt tho. and yay for them reopening the station after like an hour or so? still weird that there's been all these issues with vandalism and equipment problems in bay area bart stations lately.

Ugh 😬 just had to deal with delayed trains at Civic Center BART all day 🚫😩 my train was stuck on the platform for like an hour πŸ•°οΈ waiting for them to fix the tracks πŸ’ͺ finally they got everything fixed and we were able to leave πŸš‚πŸ‘‹ so glad no one got hurt by that electrical fire πŸ”₯πŸ’₯ anyway, I'm just glad it's over now 😌 let's just hope it doesn't happen again 🀞

Man I'm still shakin' my head about this 🀯 Electrical fires are crazy! In my day we didn't even hear about stuff like this happenin' on the rails. Nowadays it's like a scene from a movie, all these sparks and smoke everywhere πŸ”₯πŸ’₯ And then they had to shut down the whole thing, I guess that's what safety is for πŸ˜… You gotta feel for those train crew members who were dealin' with this mess, just waitin' around for hours to put out a fire. An investigation, huh? Hope they figure out what happened, can't have stuff like this happenin' all the time... it's enough to give you the heebie-jeebies 😬

Ugh πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ I know some people are saying it's good they got the station reopened, but how stressful was this for parents with kids trying to get to school?! 😩 My kid had a soccer practice and had to take an Uber because BART was closed... that bill is gonna be expensive πŸ’Έ And what about all those people who work on public transport? Do they get time off to deal with these issues? 🀯 It's just so frustrating when you're already running late and then BAM! Electrical fire on the tracks 😱

Omg, can you even imagine an electrical fire causing chaos at the BART station? 😱 Like what was going through that person's mind who left a 'foreign object' on the trackway? πŸ€” Anyway, glad no one got hurt, but seriously, how did this happen?! The SF Fire Dept. saved the day with dry chemical, btw. They're like superheroes πŸ’ͺ. One track down, multiple problems... hope they fix it ASAP so we can get back to our daily commute without any drama πŸ˜’.

man this is crazy 🀯 electrical fires can be super dangerous like what if the fire got bigger? Thankfully no one was hurt but still it's a big disruption for people who use bart. i feel bad for them πŸ˜”. and now they're saying there was a foreign object on the trackway which is just weird i dont get how that thing came into contact with the third rail. hope they figure out what happened so they can fix the tracks properly πŸ‘

πŸš‚πŸ˜± so yeah i think this electrical fire thingy is like super concerning but also kinda not surprising at all you know how old some of these trains are and stuff it's like, we knew there was gonna be a problem eventually πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ and now they're saying that some foreign object just came into contact with the third rail i mean what even is that πŸ€” should've seen this coming tho since they say the bart system has had a series of disruptions in recent months maybe they shoulda looked into it more or something like, invested in some new tech πŸ€‘
