COP30 seals uneasy climate deal that sidesteps fossil fuels

UN Climate Summit Fails to Secure Commitments on Fossil Fuel Phase-Out, Leaving Global Emissions Efforts in Limbo.

A contentious and inconclusive climate summit in Belém, Brazil has wrapped up with a deal that studiously avoids the issue of fossil fuel phase-out, causing widespread frustration among nearly 80 countries that had advocated for more rapid commitments. The UK and EU were among those who strongly pushed for nations to agree on phasing out oil, coal, and gas to mitigate climate change.

Despite UN warnings about the failure of global efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, delegates were unable to reach a consensus on this critical issue. Fossil fuel-producing countries resisted, arguing that their right to use these energy sources to support economic growth should not be restricted. The summit's outcome has left many questioning the effectiveness of international cooperation in addressing climate change.

Hanna Hundal, a delegate to the UN Climate Change Conferences, expressed her disappointment at the lack of progress on this key issue.

I'm so bummed about what happened at that climate summit 🤕😔 The fact that they couldn't agree on phasing out fossil fuels is just a major letdown. I mean, we're still talking about the UK and EU pushing for it hard, but those other countries just weren't having it. It's like they thought their economic growth was more important than saving the planet 🌎💸. I get that there are different perspectives, but come on! We need to take drastic action now if we want to limit warming to 1.5°C. The UK and EU were right on this one, in my opinion 🙄. It's a shame that it all fell through. I'm not sure what's going on with the UN and their ability to bring nations together... it just feels like they're not doing enough 👎

ugh, what a massive letdown 🤕! I mean, i get it, fossil fuels are a huge part of our economy and all that jazz, but c'mon guys... we need to take action ASAP if we wanna save our planet from total disaster 💥. it's like, 80 countries showing up to the table and not getting anywhere on this one crucial issue? that's just crazy talk 🤯. i know some folks might say they're just trying to protect their economic interests, but honestly, how's that even a thing anymore? 🤑 shouldn't we be prioritizing the future of our planet over profits? anywayz, hope hanna and others can regroup and try again in the next summit 🤞.

I'm so done with these talks 🤯! I mean, we're still stuck on fossil fuels? It's like our teachers always say "think globally, act locally" but it seems some countries just don't wanna listen 🗣️. The UK and EU were pushing for us to phase out those bad energy sources but other countries just said nope 💔. I get that they want economic growth too, but come on guys! We can't just keep burning fossil fuels like there's no tomorrow ⏰. It's so frustrating knowing we could've made a big difference if only everyone was on the same page 📝. And what about all those UN warnings? 🚨 I feel like we're just putting Band-Aids on our climate problems and not actually solving anything 💉.

Ugh, what a total letdown 🤦‍♀️! I knew something like this was gonna happen. All these countries just gonna keep on fossil fueling their ways and ignoring the fact that it's destroying our planet. It's all about economic growth, right? 🤑 Don't even get me started on how some of those countries are just gaslighting everyone with their "right to use energy sources" nonsense. It's like, come on guys! We're talking about saving the world here! 😩 And now we've got these super weak commitments that are basically worthless. What a waste of time and resources. I'm so done with all this 🙄.

omg i cant even believe whats happening 🤯😡 climate is literally dying and we're still debating about fossil fuels!!! 1.5c is not a suggestion its a goal dont they understand thats like saying dont eat for a week if ur trying to lose weight lol its basic math fam. EU UK was right on this one but i guess some countries just dont wanna change their ways 🤷‍♂️ and now we're stuck in limbo what's next gonna be the summit where we all agree that we cant agree on anything 😅

I'm so bummed about this... 🤕 I was really hoping we'd get some serious commitments from the fossil fuel-producing countries to start reducing emissions ASAP. It's like, we know what needs to be done - transition to clean energy and stuff - but it seems like those with a vested interest in keeping things status quo just aren't willing to budge.

I mean, I get that economic growth is important too, but come on! We can't keep burning fossil fuels like they're going out of style if we want to save the planet. The 1.5°C thing is super crucial and it's clear that not enough countries are on board. It's kinda worrying when you think about all the polar ice caps melting and sea levels rising... 🌎😩

I'm literally gutted by the outcome of this climate summit 🤕. I mean, we know that limiting warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels is basically a non-starter if we don't get everyone on board with phasing out fossil fuels ASAP ⏰. It's mind-boggling that nearly 80 countries were pushing for more rapid commitments and yet the UK and EU couldn't even get all the major players to agree 🤝.

I get it, fossil fuel-producing countries have a vested interest in keeping their energy sources open for business, but come on, can we really afford not to make some concessions here? The science is crystal clear – if we don't take drastic action now, we're looking at catastrophic consequences down the line 🔥. It's just so frustrating that the summit ended up being a wash 🚮.

I'm also worried about the implications of this failure for global emissions efforts going forward 🤔. If major countries can't agree on phasing out fossil fuels, how are we supposed to make meaningful progress on reducing our carbon footprint? It's time for some serious rethinking and recalibration of our climate strategy – and fast ⏱️

man this is soooo underwhelming 🤯 i mean what's the point of even having a summit if you're just gonna kick it around and not make any real changes? 🤔 fossil fuels gotta go, we need to start transitioning ASAP or else we'll be stuck in some serious climate hell 🔥 i'm not sure what the EU and UK were thinking, pushing for phasing out but not being willing to actually take concrete steps... that's just not gonna cut it 😐 and now Hanna Hundal is left to deal with all this disappointment 🤷‍♀️ hope she can get some real change happening from the inside 💪

man what a bummer 🤕 just like my aunt's cooking - always good but never gets any better lol. seriously though, 1.5°C is like that one friend who's always showing up late, still needs to get its act together on fossil fuels. I mean i get it, economic growth is important, but can't we all just get along and not pollute our planet? 🌎♀️ anyway, guess the summit was more of a 'coal'ition effort than expected 💔. hope they get it right next time, or at least someone brings some snacks 🍿

I'm so worried about our kids' future 🤕🌎 I mean, how are we gonna be able to tell them that we didn't do enough to protect the planet? It's like, we knew what was coming and we just kinda... waited around instead of taking action 💔. I get that it's not easy, but some countries really need to step up their game 🙄. I'm all for economic growth, but at what cost? Our air quality is already suffering because of pollution from fossil fuels... it's like, can't we just find a way to transition to renewable energy or something?! 🌞💚

😔 I'm soooo disappointed!!! 🤕 The world needs more concrete steps towards reducing those dirty emissions ASAP! 💨 Fossil fuels are literally sucking the life outta our planet 🌎 It's crazy that some countries just aren't willing to put their money where their mouth is, you know? 🤑 We need urgent action not these half-hearted agreements that do nothing to stop climate change from ravaging our future 🌪️ Let's keep pushing for better, stronger commitments, and hold each other accountable! 💪🏽💫

I was just thinking about trying out that new plant-based café downtown 🌱🍔 and I'm curious if they'll have any fossil fuel-free menu options now that the UK's calling for a ban... anyway, it's crazy to think we're still debating this stuff after all these years. And don't even get me started on how much more I want to travel once the carbon credits are sorted out ✈️🌎. Like, can you imagine a world where flying isn't such a dirty word? That'd be amazing! But anyway, back to that café... have you tried their vegan burgers?

OMG, 1.5°C is like, super close for our planet 🌎💔 and we just kinda... stopped trying to make it happen? I mean, fossil fuel phase-out is a no-brainer, right? 🤦‍♀️ We gotta switch to renewable energy ASAP or else we're toast 🔥.

But seriously, have you seen the stats on how much CO2 emissions are still spiking every year? It's like, over 42 billion metric tons in 2020 alone! 📊 That's not progress, that's just a whole lotta bad news 😔. I'm all for economic growth and development, but can't we find a way to do it without destroying the planet?

I mean, what's the deal with fossil fuel-producing countries? Don't they know that climate change is affecting their economies too? 🤷‍♂️ Have you seen the pics of flooding in Europe and Australia lately? That's not just some weather event, folks! It's a sign that we need to take drastic action 💦.

I'm so disappointed that the summit didn't deliver on phasing out fossil fuels. We need more countries like Sweden and Costa Rica leading by example 🌈. Let's keep pushing for change and maybe next time we'll get it right 🤞🔥

🤦‍♂️ Still no commitment to phasing out fossil fuels? Not exactly what we need right now 🌎💨. Global emissions efforts are stuck in limbo and it's only gonna get worse if we don't take drastic action ASAP 💥

I'm soooo bummed about this news 🤕. I remember back in 2015 when all those world leaders got together for the Paris Agreement and were like "we gotta do this" to save the planet 🌎. And now, it feels like we're right back where we started – with nothing concrete to show for our efforts. The UK and EU were so on point pushing for that fossil fuel phase-out deal 😤. I mean, what's taking everyone else so long? It's like they're not even listening to the science 📊. I'm starting to think that all those years of watching documentaries about climate change have prepared me more than actual world leaders 👀. Anyway, this is just a huge letdown 🎉. We need to get our act together and start making some real progress on this before it's too late ⏰...
