Dangerous cold in NYC but minimal snow as 'bombogenesis' approaches

New York City Braces for Harsh Cold Snap Ahead of Bombogenesis

A powerful low-pressure system, or "bombogenesis," is barreling towards New York City, threatening to unleash a few inches of snow on the city, but mostly leaving residents to face biting cold temperatures that could feel like near-zero. Just days after at least 10 people died in a devastating storm, officials are warning of another life-threatening weather event.

The National Weather Service is predicting a low-pressure system will intensify rapidly and edge closer to the region, potentially passing just far enough offshore to spare NYC from the worst impacts. While some snowfall is possible, especially on Sunday, the chances of significant snow are decreasing as the storm approaches.

Instead, residents can expect unseasonably cold temperatures that could drop into the teens and lower 20s during the day, with early morning temperatures plummeting even further. New Yorkers should bundle up tightly to stay safe, warns Dominic Ramunni, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service's New York office.

"The elements exposed can be devastating," he said. "It's crucial to dress in layers, limit time outdoors, cover skin that's exposed – fingers, neck, ears – as these are the first areas to feel the cold."

This prolonged stretch of below-freezing temperatures is a rare event for NYC, not having experienced such a prolonged cold snap in about eight years. The city has seen a lackluster winter so far, with snow and cold temperatures being scarce.

What's remarkable, however, is that Ramunni notes this current cold snap could be even more intense – seven consecutive days of high temperatures 15 to 20 degrees below normal. This would be an impressive weather event in the meteorology field.

Thursday night will see temperatures drop to lows around 11 degrees, with windchills making things worse. It won't start warming up until midway through next week, when highs are expected to crack the 30-degree mark – still far from average for this time of year.

While some thawing is possible due to warmer temperatures, Ramunni warns that February often brings brutal winter weather as well. So, residents should stay vigilant and monitor the forecast closely over the next few days.

ugh i no how ppl r gonna struggle w/ dis 😩 these temps are like, crazy low 4 a nyc winter. newsflash: it's feb already & we shd b all dressed 4 snow & freezing temps by now lol anyway, gotta feel for those who rnt prepared...idk how much more of dis cold ppl can take 🤪

ugh I'm so done with these crazy weather patterns in the city already had a devastating storm just last week and now this bombogenesis is coming our way? 😩 low-pressure system is gonna bring biting cold temps and near zero feels... like we're living in the arctic or something 🥶 can't wait to break out the heavy winter gear and hot chocolate ☕️ anyone else have to deal with a prolonged cold snap?

Ugh, NYC is gonna freeze its butt off this week 😩. Like, who needs snow when you can have temps below 0? And I'm all for a good cold snap every now and then, but seven consecutive days of -15°C+ is just excessive ❄️. Not to mention the windchills making it feel like -30°C. Can't even remember the last time I went outside without freezing my fingers off 💀. And don't even get me started on the lack of snowfall, it's like they're taking the fun out of winter ☔️. Bring on some decent snowfall already! 🤯

Ugh I just got back from a crazy road trip last weekend 🚗😴 and I'm still trying to shake off the jet lag. Have you ever tried driving through the night with someone who's been sleeping for like 5 hours straight? 😂 It's chaos! Anyway, what's with the snow in NYC? I've always wanted to visit the city during winter but never had the chance 🌃💔 I guess this is a good excuse to start planning a trip... or just stay indoors and drink hot chocolate while I watch Netflix 🍫📺

Ugh, can't we just have a normal winter for once? I mean, I get it, New York City doesn't get to enjoy a white Christmas every year, but seven straight days of -20°C temps? That's just harsh 💉. And what's with the whole 'it could be worse' thing? Like, yeah no kidding! We already had 10 people die in the last storm... 🤕 shouldn't we be trying to prevent these kinds of events rather than just bracing for impact?

🥶 ugh another cold snap in nyc...like we didn't just go through a devastating storm like 5 mins ago 🙄 what's with the 'bombogenesis' thing tho? sounds like something from a action movie 😂 anyway, temp warnings aside, can we just talk about how ridiculous it is that our city's 'weather service' thinks we're gonna be fine if we just bundle up? lol i mean, layer up, limit time outdoors, cover skin...like we didn't learn those lessons last week 🤷‍♀️ and btw, 7 consecutive days of -15°C temps sounds like a record breaker...i'm literally living in a icicle ❄️

Ugh, another crazy cold snap hitting NYC 🥶😩. I'm not saying it's a total disaster, but 7 consecutive days of freezing temps? That's a stretch even for me 💀. I do think it's crazy that they're warning people to dress in layers and limit time outdoors, 'cause, yeah, the cold can be pretty brutal. But, at the same time, I'm not expecting much snow either... just a bunch of grey skies and wind chill. On the bright side, if we get 7 straight days of sub-freezing temps, that's actually kinda impressive from a weather perspective 🤓. But still, I'd rather be enjoying some actual winter wonderland vibes, you know? 😒

man oh man, this cold snap is gonna be bad 🥶😩 NYC is already dealing with the aftermath of the last storm and now this... it's like the universe is trying to give them a break 😒. but you know what? I think people are being super prepared for this one, they're stocking up on supplies and making sure their homes are all cozy 🏠. I mean, 7 days straight below 15 degrees is crazy ❄️, but at least it's not expected to snow too much which would make things even worse 😅. we should all just be a bit more considerate of each other during this time, you know, check in on the elderly and vulnerable folks 🤗. anyway, fingers crossed that everyone stays safe and warm 💕.

Ugh, can you believe we're having another polar vortex situation here? I mean, I love New York City in the snow, but like 15-20 degrees below normal for a whole week? That's just too much. I'm already dreading Thursday night when it's gonna be like -11 with windchill... brrr 🥶

And yeah, I know the city hasn't had a cold snap this intense in years, so that's kinda cool (in a weird way). But still, can't we just get some decent snowfall instead of freezing our butts off? Like, what's up with February being the worst month for winter weather?

Anyway, I hope everyone stays safe and cozy during this bombogenesis event. Just remember to bundle up like Dominic Ramunni said... layers, layers, layers! ☃️
