No charges yet for NYPD sergeant in fatal crash, but she's already filed for pension

Off-Duty NYPD Sergeant Taps into Retirement Benefits Amid Ongoing Probe Into Fatal Crash.

Sergeant Tiffany Howell has taken an unprecedented step, filing for retirement just days after her off-duty driving led to the fatal crash of 61-year-old Manuel Boitel on the Taconic State Parkway in Peekskill. The move could potentially safeguard her pension if she faces disciplinary action following a possible arrest.

The NYPD sergeant, who returned from a police function with blood-alcohol levels still being examined by state authorities, collided head-on with Boitel while driving southbound in the wrong direction of the northbound lanes. Authorities have yet to determine whether Howell's impairment played a role in the crash.

As the investigation into the incident unfolds, sources close to the case suggest that Howell is involved with various community organizations, including a local Catholic fraternal society and an event planning service. However, officials remain tight-lipped about her personal life and activities leading up to the tragic events of last week.

With the department's 30-day notice period for termination looming, NYPD leaders are weighing their options regarding Howell's employment status. A spokesperson declined to comment on the matter. The New York attorney general's office is also probing the incident as required by state law when a police officer is involved in a death.

Howell has served with the NYPD for 18 years and worked on the department's Crime Control Strategies unit before the fatal crash. As the probe continues, it remains to be seen whether she will ultimately face disciplinary action or retain her position within the force.

I don't know... 🤔 Like, I get that she wants to protect herself financially, but at the same time, isn't retirement kinda... premature? 😅 I mean, if she's going to file for retirement now, shouldn't she just be honest about what happened and face whatever consequences come her way? But then again, I've heard stories of cops getting off scot-free due to their connections in the system, so maybe it's a good idea for her to play it safe... 🤑 And what if she doesn't get disciplined? Does that mean she'll be able to keep on working without any repercussions? That just doesn't sit right with me... 🙅‍♀️

Ugh, this is just great 🙄... so she's trying to retire to get away from this mess, huh? I mean, who wouldn't want to tap out after getting caught driving drunk and killing someone? 🚗💀 It's not like she should be worried about losing her pension or anything, right? That'd be the least of her problems. The fact that she might face disciplinary action is probably just a formality, considering she's got connections with "community organizations"... yeah, sure...

And the NYPD's 30-day notice period for termination? Good luck getting fired without some serious scandal brewing 🤔. I'm guessing they're gonna have to let her off the hook one way or another. The AG's office is poking around, but it's not like they can actually do anything about it at this point. It's all just a big mess waiting to happen...

🐈😒 Oh my goodness, this is so crazy! I don't get how someone who's been doing police work for 18 years can just retire after being in a fatal crash on the job? And what about the investigation into the crash itself? It sounds like they're still trying to figure out if she was drunk or not... it's all so suspicious 🤔. And why is she filing for retirement now, just days after everything went down? Is she trying to get her pension before things get worse? 🤑💸

omg did you guys ever try that new apple airpop earbuds? i mean they're so comfy and sound quality is insane 🎧💥 i was using them on my morning commute yesterday and it totally changed my daily routine. no more tired ears from the subway vibes lol anyway back to this sergeant thing... 18 years of service is crazy what's going through her head right now? 🤔 is she even thinking about the whole thing or just thinking about retirement already?

I'm totally confused about this whole thing... I mean, I get why she'd wanna retire early if she's in trouble with the law, but it's just so sad that it had to come to this. I've heard of officers facing consequences for their actions on and off duty, but a crash that results in someone's death is a whole different story 🤕. I'm not buying the idea that her impairment didn't play a role, though... I mean, 0.12% BAC isn't nothing, you know? And what about all those community orgs she's involved with? Just saying.

It's also kinda weird that nobody's talking about the fact that this could be a huge test case for police accountability and pension rules 🤝. I hope the AG's office keeps digging into this. Anyway, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens next...

omg can u believe people get away with driving drunk and killing someone? like seriously how did she even think that was okay 🙄 anyway i had the craziest dream last night about flying over NYC on a Vespa and landing in Central Park I swear it was so real 🌃💨 what's up with the prices of avocados though? 5 bucks for one of those things is just crazy 🤯
