Romford MP Andrew Rosindell becomes latest Tory to defect to Reform

Romford MP Andrew Rosindell has become the latest Conservative to defect to Reform UK, joining a growing list of high-profile defectors in just four days. The 59-year-old, who has been an MP since 2001, cited opposition to the UK's handover of sovereignty over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius as his main reason for leaving.

Rosindell had previously served as shadow Foreign Office minister under Kemi Badenoch, but claimed that the Conservative party had not properly opposed the plan. His departure is seen as a blow to the Tories, who now have seven MPs in Reform UK.

The issue at hand revolves around the Chagos Islands, which were removed from British control in 1971 to make way for a US airbase on Diego Garcia. Rosindell has been an advocate for the rights of the Chagossian people, who were forcibly displaced by the British and American governments.

In a scathing attack on his former party, Rosindell stated that Labour and Conservative politicians had "been complicit in the surrender of this sovereign British territory to a foreign power." He accused the party of being "irreparably bound" to past mistakes and unwilling to take accountability for their decisions.

Rosindell's defection follows that of Robert Jenrick, who left the Tories on Thursday after months of secret talks with Nigel Farage. The former cabinet minister Nadhim Zahawi also defected last month.

Farage welcomed Rosindell into Reform UK, calling him a "great patriot" and saying that his departure from the Conservatives was due to "the Tory party's lies and hypocrisy over the Chagos Islands betrayal." With this defection, Reform UK now has seven MPs, and Farage announced that he will extend the deadline for other defectors to join the party until May 7th.

πŸ˜’ just great, another bunch of politicians who can't even get it right on their own πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. Rosindell's defection is no surprise, tbh - he was always a bit of a thorn in the Conservative party's side 🐜. I mean, who needs to be part of a party that's just going to blindly follow whatever the powers that be tell them to do? πŸ˜’ and now Reform UK gets to claim another high-profile defector as their own 🀝. Farage's welcome speech was just dripping with hypocrisy πŸ‘€, but hey, at least he's consistent πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ. What really gets me is how these politicians think they're doing the right thing by sticking up for the Chagossian people 🌟, when in reality it's all just a bit of a PR stunt πŸ“Ί. Still, I guess you have to give Rosindell points for being consistent in his criticism of the Conservative party πŸ˜’... now if only he'd actually done something about it while he was still part of the party πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

just heard about Andrew Rosindell leaving the Conservatives πŸ€”... i feel bad for him tho, he's been an MP since 2001! 😊 anyway, it's kinda weird how politicians switch sides over some issue like this... personally, i don't think we should just hand over our sovereignty to another country lol what about all those people affected by the Chagos Islands thing? 🌴 it's crazy that Rosindell feels the party hasn't been doing enough for them. Reform UK is gaining some big names though, but will it really make a difference in the long run? 🀞

I'm so done with politicians making empty promises πŸ™„. I mean, Andrew Rosindell's departure from the Conservatives is actually kinda awesome, though 😊. The guy stood up for what he believed in and wasn't afraid to speak truth to power – that takes guts! πŸ’ͺ But it also shows how broken the system can be when you're not willing to hold people accountable... I'm still waiting to see if Reform UK's actions will actually live up to their words πŸ€”.

πŸ€” I'm all about free speech and understanding different perspectives, even if someone's views don't align with mine... Andrew Rosindell's decision to leave the Tories is a complex one, and we shouldn't jump to conclusions just yet πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. What really bothers me is how some people are framing this as a "betrayal" of the party, without giving Rosindell a chance to explain himself fully... His concerns about the Chagos Islands handover are valid, and I think we should be having an open discussion about that 🀝. It's not just about politics; it's about people's lives and human rights πŸ’‘. We need more nuanced conversations like this, where we can really dig into the issues and try to find common ground...

I'm still trying to wrap my head around all these defections... πŸ˜• The way Rosindell is speaking out about the Chagos Islands issue is super passionate, but at the same time it's kinda worrying that a whole bunch of MPs are leaving one party for another? πŸ€” It feels like we're just shifting who's in charge instead of actually addressing the problems. Reform UK might be all about change, but how do they plan to make it work? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I'm not sure if I should be optimistic or pessimistic about this whole thing... 🀯

Ugh, can't believe the Tories are losing more MPs πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. This Chagos Islands deal just doesn't sit right with me. I mean, what's the point of having a government if you're just gonna hand over control to another country? And Rosindell is really sticking it up to them by defecting... about time too! πŸ˜’ Reform UK seems like the only party that's got some balls on this issue. Still, seven defectors in four days might be a bit concerning... can't they all stick together for once? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

πŸ€” I'm totally with Rosindell on this one... it's been ages since we've seen a strong stance taken by our politicians on issues like the Chagos Islands. The fact that Labour and Conservative both got caught up in the handover plan is pretty wild to me. 🀯 And can we talk about how messed up the whole situation was with those Chagossian people being forced off their homes? It's crazy that some of our politicians have been so downplaying this issue for years. The Tory party's reputation just took another hit, imo πŸ’”

I'm so tired of politicians always making promises they can't keep πŸ™„. I remember when I was younger, my grandfather used to tell me about how the British government just pushed him and his family off their land in Mauritius without giving them a say... it's crazy that this is still happening 50+ years later!

Andrew Rosindell seems like a good dude who actually cares about what he's fighting for, I've gotta give him that 🀝. The fact that the Tories aren't doing enough to stop the handover of sovereignty over the Chagos Islands just shows how out of touch they are with their constituents.

I'm intrigued by this whole Reform UK thing, can't wait to learn more about it... maybe we'll see some real change come from these defections 🀞.

omg u guys can't believe what's happening?! 🀯 Andrew Rosindell is like a hero to so many people in the UK & I'm one of them! He stood up for what he believes in, which is totally fair & reasonable, especially when it comes to the Chagos Islands. I mean, who wouldn't want their sovereignty back? 🌟

I've been following this issue for ages & it's ridiculous that politicians are still debating about it. Like, come on! We know the Brits transferred ownership to Mauritius in 1971 to make way for a US airbase & we also know they were forced to displace the Chagossian people. It's not like it was some kind of "oops" mistake.

I'm so happy Rosindell is joining Reform UK, but I wish more politicians would be brave enough to speak out against these kinds of decisions. We need change in the UK & we need it now! πŸ’ͺ

cant believe rossindell waited this long to break free from tories he was always a thorn in their side on chagos islands issue but still its about time someone took them down and reform uk is raking it in πŸ€‘πŸ‘ nige farage is geniuse by the way bringing back his old mates and all

I'm so confused about why all these MPs are jumping ship from the Conservatives? Like what's going on? πŸ˜• I get that the Chagos Islands thing is super emotive, but can't they just have a proper debate about it instead of defecting to some new party? πŸ€” And what's up with Reform UK? It seems like Nigel Farage is trying to create some kind of "new" conservative movement, but isn't he just moving the furniture around instead of changing the policy? πŸ πŸ’‘

omg I cant believe Rosindell is defecting 🀯, like what took him so long? 59 years as a Tory MP and he's just now realizing the party has been sold out on the Chagos Islands issue? that's some serious hindsight from me πŸ˜‚. but for real though, its time someone called out those in power for their hypocrisy. Farage is killing it with his "great patriot" vibes btw πŸ‘‘, Reform UK needs more people like Rosindell who actually care about what they're voting for. its about time the Tories got a wake-up call πŸ’₯

πŸ€” I'm not surprised to see another MP jumping ship from the Conservatives - it seems like they're losing grip on some of their own members! πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ The Chagos Islands issue is such a clear-cut case, and for them to be so hands-off about it is just embarrassing. It's good that Rosindell's speaking out for what he believes in, even if it means leaving the party behind. πŸ‘ Reform UK might actually be on to something with Farage at the helm...

I don't know man... I mean, I'm all about standing up for what's right, but at the same time, I feel like Andrew Rosindell is being super unreasonable πŸ€”. I get that he's passionate about the Chagos Islands and wants to see justice done for the Chagossian people, but can't he just work within the system? It feels like a huge cop-out for him to just leave the Conservatives and join Reform UK without even trying to find other solutions πŸ˜’. And what's with all these defections, anyway? Is it really that bad under Boris πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ? On the other hand, I do think it's awesome that Reform UK is giving a voice to people who feel like they're not being heard... but, on the flip side, are they just going to be a bunch of rebels with no plan 😬. Ugh, my brain is all over the place 🀯

man i'm just thinking about the weight of our collective decisions 🀯, you know? like rosindell's departure from the conservatives is a major deal, but it makes me think about how we hold power accountable, or not πŸ€”. it's crazy to see him go to reform uk, given Farage's track record, and what really got him out of the cons was this whole chagos islands thing... it's like, our politicians are supposed to represent us, but instead they're often just serving special interests πŸ’Έ. and then there's the fact that rosindell felt he couldn't trust his own party to stand up for the rights of the chagossian people 🌎. it's a tough conversation to have, but i think we need to be questioning our systems and leaders more often πŸ”
