Snow Mice! review – Christmassy critters play hide and squeak in winter wonderland

Snow Mice! - A Charming Winter Wonderland Adventure

The Egg theatre has once again delivered a festive treat with Snow Mice!, an hour-long adventure aimed at children aged three to nine. Based on the popular early years show, this new production brings together a talented cast of puppeteers and musicians to create an enchanting experience for young audiences.

As the story begins, we meet three siblings who have relocated from the city to the countryside, with only the promise of adventure and discovery to keep them company. The town mice, however, are quick to warm up to their new neighbors and encourage them to explore and appreciate the wonders of their surroundings.

With its whimsical set design, created by Zoe Squire, the theatre is transformed into a magical winter wonderland, complete with a doll's house that doubles as bunk beds and a snowy landscape that blankets the auditorium. The lighting design by Katy Morison adds an extra layer of enchantment to the scene, making it feel like freshly fallen snow.

Under the direction of Alex Byrne, the cast brings the characters to life with impressive puppetry skills, created by Marc Parrett based on Edwina Bridgeman's design. The cast's improvisational abilities shine through in their interactions with the audience, adding a delightful level of spontaneity to the performance.

The score, composed by Greg Hall, is a perfect blend of mystery and mischief, perfectly capturing the playful spirit of the Snow Mice! The actors join in on various instruments, making it feel like an intimate concert experience. The charming incongruity of Hall's tuxedo-clad character adds a delightful touch to the show.

One of the standout aspects of Snow Mice! is its realistic sibling dynamic, with the cast delivering a convincing portrayal of the ups and downs of family life. The parallels drawn between this production and C.S. Lewis's The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe are particularly clever, adding an extra layer of depth to the story.

Overall, Snow Mice! is a delightful winter wonderland adventure that is sure to enchant young audiences. With its talented cast, charming set design, and catchy score, this production is a must-see for families and children of all ages.

OMG, I remember watching Sesame Street when I was a kid 🤣 and now they're making shows like this for my little nephews! It's so cute how they got to explore the countryside and make friends with the mice 🐭🌳. The music sounds super catchy too 🎵, I can already imagine my nephew singing along in the car 🚗. And isn't it great that the show is all about sibling love and adventure? My cousins had those same kinds of fights when they were kids 😂. Can't wait to take my nephews to see this show with me! 👍

I just saw this show with my grandkids last week 🎄🐭 and let me tell you, it was pure magic! The way the puppeteers brought those little mice to life was incredible 🤩. I loved how they incorporated the whole family dynamic, even for a 5-year-old who's not really into "dramas" anymore 😂. It's amazing how something so simple can be so cleverly done. And that set design? Wow! I felt like I was right there in the snowy wonderland with them ❄️. My kids were laughing and clapping throughout, and even my 62-year-old self was smiling from ear to ear 😊. It's not often you see a show that can do that to an oldie like me... 👵
