Some fans whistle as Lionel Messi’s name is announced as Paris Saint-Germain’s season hits new low | CNN

Lionel Messi's Return to Paris Saint-Germain Hits New Low as Fans Turn Against Him

Paris Saint-Germain suffered a dismal home defeat against Lyon on Sunday, marking the team's second straight loss. The result has sent shockwaves through the Ligue 1 title race, leaving PSG struggling to stay ahead of Lens and Marseille.

The poor performance was preceded by a rather embarrassing moment for the team when fans whistled as Messi's name appeared on the big screen during the starting lineup announcement. This reaction seemed out of place given Messi's return to the club earlier this month, which was expected to be a game-changer for PSG.

However, despite the high expectations surrounding Messi, the Argentine superstar has yet to replicate his past success with the team. His 34 goal contributions in all competitions so far this season are second only to teammate Kylian Mbappe's 38. Head coach Christophe Galtier refused to pinpoint Messi as the main reason for the team's struggles.

"I found it hard to listen to," Galtier said, "There may be expectations for Messi and Mbappé to unlock difficult situations. Messi tries very hard, they didn't all work out; but around him, the other players also need to do their jobs."

It seems that PSG is struggling with a case of 'Champions League or bust' mentality, as Laurent Blanc, head coach of Lyon, argued in an interview. "Paris's problem is when the No. 1 objective of the Champions League is no longer accessible, it seems that the season no longer exists – and at all levels," he said.

The pressure on PSG will only intensify with a crucial week ahead, including a match against unbeaten Nice and hosting Lens at home. The team's recent losses have raised questions about whether they can overcome their struggles and claim another Ligue 1 title.

As for Messi, it seems that fans are starting to lose patience with the Argentine superstar, who is expected to be instrumental in PSG's quest for success. It will be interesting to see how the team responds to this growing pressure and whether Galtier's tactics can turn the season around.

man i dont get why ppl r so salty towards messi rn hes been doin his thing out there but its like expectations r way too high 4 a guy who just came back from a long break u gotta give him time 2 settle in & gel w/ team, cant expect him 2 carry the whole squad 2 victories alone 🤔💭

🤔 psst... messi's gotta step up his game if he wanna save psg from the dumpster fire 🚮💔 fans r gettin tired of him not deliverin like he should be 🙄 34 goals is decent but when u r expected to do magic, u need to perform 🔮 still got faith in galtier tho 👊 gotta mix it up and find that winning formula 🔄

lol @ these PSG fans think they're so harsh but let's be real, Messi is still putting up stats that are crazy high 🤯 38 goals? yeah he might not be as clutch as Mbappe but he's still one of the best forwards in the world! and btw what's wrong with whistling when his name comes on screen? it's a classic soccer moment lol 😂 PSG needs to get over itself and focus on playing some solid football. Galtier is right, everyone needs to do their job not just rely on Messi to save the day 🤓

idk whats goin on w/ messi at psg... 2 yrs ago he was the king of ligue 1 now hes just another player tryna fit in & his fans r gettin restless lol what happened 2 him?? didnt see it comin 4 them 2 lose 2 lyon like dat 😱⚽️ anywayz i think messi still got game but psg needs 2 figure out their formation & tactics 1st b4 he can lead em 2 victory 💪

I'm low-key salty about Messi's return to PSG not living up to expectations yet 🤷‍♂️. I mean, I know he's still working on his game and all that, but it feels like fans are already piling on him for not being the magician he was at Barca 🔮. Newsflash: nobody expects him to be the same player he was in his prime anymore! 🙅‍♂️ And yeah, maybe the 'Champions League or bust' mentality is real 💥 - if PSG can't even get by Lyon and Nice on home turf, what are they gonna do against bigger teams? 😬

OMG 🤯 PSG is having a major identity crisis! 💔 They're struggling to stay ahead of Lens and Marseille, and now fans are literally booing Messi on the big screen 😱? That's not the PSG I know! 🙅‍♂️ Anyway, did you guys see these stats? 📊 PSG has been averaging 1.5 goals per game this season, which is way down from last year 📉 They're also losing to teams they shouldn't be beating 😳. Meanwhile, Messi's goal contributions are actually pretty decent compared to Mbappe's 😎 34 goals in all comps isn't too shabby! 🤷‍♂️ Galtier's gotta step up his game and get those other players on board ASAP 🚀 I'm keeping an eye on this one... 👀

⚽👀 so i think ppl r getting a lil too harsh on messi... 34 goals ain't bad, considerin his age n the squad r still gettin used to havin him back 🤔

galtier's right tho, it's not just messi's job, other players need 2 step up their game ⚡️ and let's not forget lyonnais got a solid team themselves 💪

the "champions league or bust" mentality r really puttin pressure on PSG 🤯 might make 'em get all the way to the final but can they hold it down? 🤔 only time'll tell

I think PSG is overthinking things 🤔. They're putting too much pressure on Messi, like he's the only one who can save them ⚠️. Newsflash: even Messi isn't that good! 😂 Fans need to chill out and support their team instead of booing the star player 👎. It's just a game, after all 🏀. And what's with this "Champions League or bust" mentality? That's not fair to the players, especially if they're not feeling it 🔥. Maybe PSG needs to take a step back, regroup, and remember that there's more to football than just winning championships 🤝.

man... i feel bad for messi 🤕 he's been playing some trash games lately but u gotta remember he's still trying his best 😔 psg fans r getting a lil too hard on him lol, like they're expectin him to be invincible or somethin 💪 christophe galtier is right tho, the whole team needs to step up their game if they wanna win some titles 📈 u can tell the pressure's gettin intense now, especially with the champions league on the line 🔥 i think messi will bounce back, he's a pro, he'll find his groove again 💫

🤔 You know when you think someone should be a hero, but they're not living up to your expectations? Like Messi, he's back at PSG where fans expect him to save the day, but it's not happening 🏃‍♂️. It's like, we all put pressure on ourselves and others, thinking that one person can fix everything 💪. But the truth is, success is a team effort 🤝. You gotta work together, support each other, and trust that everyone's doing their part 💕. Maybe PSG needs to take a step back, re-evaluate their strategy, and remember that it's not just about one superstar, but about the whole squad 👫.

🤔😐 I'm not surprised by this turn of events, to be honest. People tend to remember the big names, but sometimes it's about the team effort that matters most 🏆 PSG has a talented squad, but if they can't work together and find consistency, it's gonna be tough to catch up with those ahead 🔴⚽

😐 I gotta say, I'm kinda surprised by how quickly Messi's return to PSG has gone sour 🤔. I mean, the guy is a legend, right? But fans are super vocal about it now... I think that's because expectations were sky-high after his departure 🌪️. The team needs to step up their game and get that "Champions League or bust" mentality outta here 💪! If they can't do it now, I don't know when ⏰. Galtier seems like the right man for the job, though... he's not making excuses 🙅‍♂️. Maybe PSG just needs a little shake-up? 😊

idk if ppl r really mad at messi lol, i mean we just saw him play 2 games after his return n didnt exactly set fire to the pitch 🤷‍♂️. fans are always hyped 4 a reason 2 let it cool down a bit u feel? also galtier sounds like he's trying 2 avoid blame, instead of saying messi's not doing enough, he's all about the team effort... or is that just an excuse? 🤔

man... i feel bad for messi, he came back to paris saint-germain with so much hype but its like the team is struggling to even get things right 🤔. fans are getting restless too, it was pretty awkward when they whistled during the lineup announcement tho 😳. u gotta think that christophe galtier's got a point tho, the other players need to step up their game if messi's not scoring like he used to. but at the same time, its hard not to expect great things from him, especially considering his past success with the team 🤞. i'm gonna keep an eye on this season and see how psg turns it around 💪

idk what's going on w/ messi rn... ppl are still hyping him up after that epic comeback in 2022 but since he came back, psg's been struggling lol? like, i get it, expectations are high and all that but 34 goals isn't bad tho 🤷‍♂️. fans need to chill out a bit & give the guy some time to settle back in 👍. maybe galtier has a point about needing other players to step up their game too 💬

🤔 I feel like PSG needs to stop putting all the pressure on Messi 🙅‍♂️, you know? The guy's still an amazing player, but he's not getting the same level of support as Kylian Mbappe is 💪. It's like they're expecting him to be a one-man team or something 😳. And honestly, I'm starting to think that the "Champions League or bust" mentality is just too much for them 🏆...

I think PSG is facing a tough situation here, kinda like the UK's current economic crisis 🤯. They need to figure out who's leading the pack and not just rely on Messi or Mbappe to carry them through. It's all about teamwork and strategy, you know? If they want to stay on top in Ligue 1, they gotta think outside the box – or should I say, outside the squad? 😊

🤔 Messi's return was hyped up like crazy but now fans are getting a bit salty... 🙄 I mean, he's still putting in the goals, just not breaking that 50+ mark yet 😐. The pressure from PSG fans is building up and it's gonna be tough for Christophe Galtier to turn this season around 🔥 PSG needs to get its mojo back ASAP! 🎯 Lens and Marseille are closing in fast so they can't slack off... ⏰ It'll be interesting to see if Messi can redeem himself by the end of the season 💪

Ugh, this is getting ridiculous 🤯! I mean, I get it, we all expected Messi to be the hero again, but come on! The fans are being super harsh and it's not fair to him. PSG had a rough start, and now they're under so much pressure to perform that it's like they're already losing before the game even starts 🙅‍♂️. And Galtier just dodged all the blame by saying Messi tries hard but the other players need to step up? Like, what did we expect from him again? 😒
