'That make-or-break feeling? I love it': can André de Ridder put ENO back on its feet?

André de Ridder, the new music director of English National Opera (ENO), is walking a tightrope as he attempts to put the struggling company back on its feet. With the company's funding uncertain and morale at an all-time low, De Ridder's enthusiasm and confidence are unwavering.

The 54-year-old conductor has taken up the role formally in 2027, after a period of turmoil that saw two previous conductors quit suddenly due to concerns over the company's future. Despite this, De Ridder is undaunted, believing that ENO offers opportunities for growth and innovation.

For De Ridder, Manchester represents a "great chance" to develop a new audience and showcase opera in a new and exciting way. He is excited about the prospect of collaborating with local artists and organizations to create something truly unique. The UK premiere of Du Yun's Angel's Bone, for example, promises to bring a fresh perspective to the opera world.

De Ridder's own history with ENO is well-documented. As a student in 1996, he watched productions at the Coliseum, including Bernd Alois Zimmermann's Die Soldaten. More recently, he conducted the premiere of Gerald Barry's The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant in 2000. His experience working with Richard Jones and Barbara Hannigan has had a lasting impact on his career.

Despite the challenges ahead, De Ridder remains optimistic about ENO's future. He acknowledges that the company faces significant problems but believes that he can make a positive difference. For him, the "make-or-break feeling" is one of excitement and possibility.

De Ridder's decision to leave Germany, where he currently holds the post of music director, was influenced by the country's comfortable funding and long rehearsal periods. In contrast, ENO faces significant financial and logistical challenges. However, De Ridder believes that this makes his role even more crucial in ensuring the company's success.

As he prepares to conduct Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny at the Coliseum, De Ridder is acutely aware of the pressure on him to deliver. Despite this, his enthusiasm for Weill's music and his commitment to ENO are unwavering. The future of opera in Britain hangs in the balance, but with De Ridder at the helm, there is a sense that things are about to change for the better.

In an industry where complacency can be deadly, De Ridder's arrival marks a new era of innovation and experimentation. His passion for ENO and his vision for its future will undoubtedly shape the company's trajectory in the years to come. One thing is certain: André de Ridder is ready to take on the challenge and put English National Opera back on its feet.

OMG I just got the most amazing new coffee machine 🤩 and I'm totally obsessed with it! It makes the most incredible latte art, you should totally come over and see it in action 😆. I was watching this documentary about coffee production the other day and it's crazy to think that most of the world's coffee is grown in just a few countries... anyway, back to opera 🎵...

omg I feel like the music director thing is so stressful!!! 😅 just imagine having to save an entire opera company from falling apart and it's like, you gotta be super confident and stuff. i wish André de Ridder was my teacher or something lol he sounds like a total boss tho! 🤩 his experience with ENO must be super valuable and I love that he's all about collaborating with local artists to make something new and exciting for Manchester. it's like, the future of opera is in good hands 😊

🤔 so another conductor comes in thinking they can save a sinking ship, but do they actually have a plan B? ENO's been struggling for ages 🚨💔 still waiting for them to sort out their finances... meanwhile de Ridder gets to enjoy the Manchester sunshine 🌞💃 with all the funding and rehearsal time he could ever want. hope he can bring some fresh blood (and $$$) to the company, but history repeats itself...

I'm low-key excited about André de Ridder taking the helm at ENO 🙌! The guy's got some serious guts, considering the company's been through all that drama 😬. I mean, who else would wanna join a sinking ship and try to turn it around? 🚢 But for real, De Ridder seems like he's got a good vibe going on - he's all about innovation and collaboration, which is exactly what ENO needs right now 💡. I'm intrigued by his plans to bring in local artists and organizations, too - could be a game-changer for the opera world 🤔. Fingers crossed De Ridder can make some magic happen at the Coliseum! 🎭

omg, i'm so hyped about André de Ridder taking over as music director of ENO 🎶👏 he's like the ultimate underdog story - I mean, the company's been through some tough times but this dude is all in 🤩 and I love how passionate he is about opera 🌟 Manchester is gonna be buzzing with energy when he starts conducting shows! And can we talk about his history with ENO? the guy's got experience pouring out of every pore 💖 let's give him all the support and cheers, pls 🎉

Just read about the new music director of English National Opera, and I gotta say, he's got his work cut out for him. The company's in a tough spot, but De Ridder seems like a positive force - really passionate about opera and wanting to bring some new energy to the table. I'm intrigued by the prospect of him working with local artists and organizations to create something fresh, especially with that UK premiere of Du Yun's Angel's Bone on the horizon 🎵. The fact that he's got experience under his belt (literally, in 1996) is a big plus too. Fingers crossed for ENO - they need someone like De Ridder to shake things up and get the company back on track 🤞

🤔 I'm curious, how do you think the arts are affected when there's uncertainty about funding? Is it hard for artists like De Ridder to make decisions about their future? 🎭💸 I mean, ENO is such an iconic place, what if they don't turn things around? Will that be a loss for opera in the UK? 🤕

I'm not sure about this new music director, André de Ridder... I mean, yeah, he's enthusiastic and all that, but we've seen a lot of "innovations" in opera companies before that haven't exactly worked out so well 🤔💡 He's talking about collaborating with local artists and making it more exciting for a new audience, which sounds nice, but have you thought this through? What if he's just throwing money at problems without really solving them? We need to be careful not to just throw our hands up and say "oh, this is going to fix everything"... that's just the opposite of how it usually works 🙃

I think it's great that ENO has someone like De Ridder at the helm, he seems like a total pro 💪. I mean, you can tell he's passionate about opera and wants to bring some fresh energy to the company. The fact that he's willing to take on the challenges and uncertainties head-on is super admirable 🤓. Manchester being his new base is also a win, I've heard the city is really coming into its own and I love how he's excited about collaborating with local artists 🎨. Fingers crossed that he can make some magic happen and turn ENO around! 💫

im so hyped about eno getting a new music director! 🎵 like, the company needs all the luck it can get right now, but i think andre de ridder might just be the guy to turn things around 💪 he's got some serious experience under his belt and is all about pushing boundaries with opera. i'm really intrigued by his idea of collaborating with local artists and organizations - that could bring some fresh energy to the scene 🌈

I'm so nervous for André De Ridder as he takes over ENO 🤞! I think it's awesome that he's optimistic about the company's future, but let's be real, it's not gonna be easy 😬. Those long rehearsal periods in Germany? Luxe 💁‍♀️... ENO is struggling to make ends meet over here. Still, I believe De Ridder has a good vibe and wants to shake things up, which might just be what the company needs 🌈. Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny at the Coliseum is gonna be epic 🎭! Fingers crossed De Ridder can bring some much-needed excitement back to the opera scene in Britain 👍

OMG, I'm so stoked about André de Ridder taking over as music director of ENO 🎵👏! The opera scene in the UK has been kinda stagnant for a while, and someone with his passion and vision is just what it needs 💖. I love that he's all about innovation and pushing boundaries – that's exactly what we need to keep art forms fresh and exciting 🔥. And can we talk about how inspiring it is that he's willing to take on the challenges head-on? 🙌 The fact that he's leaving Germany, where funding is more stable, just shows how dedicated he is to making a difference here 💪. Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny at the Coliseum is gonna be EPIC! Can't wait to see what he has in store for us 🎟️

I'm low-key hyped about this new music director at English National Opera 🤩! André de Ridder's got that fire, you know? I mean, he's taking over a company that's been struggling, but he's not worried - he's all about growth and innovation 💡. And I love how he's thinking outside the box, like collaborating with local artists to bring something new to the table 🎨. The fact that he's coming from Germany, where funding is more stable, makes his role even crunchier, but I trust him to make it work 💪. He's all about putting ENO back on its feet and making opera cool again 🔥. Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny better bring the heat 🎵!

I'm not sure I'd believe him if he said ENO was gonna be alright, but I do think De Ridder's got that old-school opera magic 💫🎶. Reminds me of when I used to watch opera at the Glyndebourne back in '98 – that place was like a different world then! Anyway, I'm kinda excited to see how he'll shake things up at ENO and bring some new energy to the table 🤔. And hey, if anyone can make it work, it's De Ridder – he's got the passion and expertise to pull it off 🔥. Still, you've gotta feel for the bloke; taking over a company in crisis mode is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline 🚒😬. Fingers crossed he'll be able to turn things around!
