‘The Musical’ Review: A Middle-School Drama Teacher Certainly Brings the Drama in an Off-Kilter Comedy

Giselle Bonilla's latest effort, "The Musical," is an offbeat comedy that revels in its unapologetic misanthropy, finding humor in the misfortunes of a middle-school drama teacher. The film centers around Doug Leibovitz, played by Will Brill, a nerdy and permanently aggrieved educator who seeks revenge on his better-paid and better-looking love rival through an ill-fated school production of "West Side Story."

The plot is a masterclass in satire, tackling topics like cancel culture, representation politics, and social anxiety. However, Bonilla doesn't delve too deeply into these issues, instead focusing on Doug's petty vendetta against his boss, Brady (Rob Lowe), who has quickly stolen Abigail's affections. The film finds its strength in Brill's performance as the titular character, bringing a sense of relatable loneliness and malevolent excess to the role.

While Bonilla's direction occasionally falters, veering towards shrill amplification over deadpan understatement, the overall effect remains riveting. Mateo Nossa's score perfectly captures the film's chaotic energy, punctuating Heller's witty and shocking writing with style. A climactic musical number featuring Enigma's "Return to Innocence" feels like a deliberate flourish, rather than an attempt to gild the lily.

Ultimately, "The Musical" is a work that embodies its protagonist's anti-earnestness, delighting in its own brazen humor and outrageous antics. While it may be acquired bad taste for some viewers, it stands out from the festival pack with its refusal to play by the rules of traditional comedy. The film's unapologetic skewering of systems where tokenism trumps meaningful change will resonate with audiences looking for a fresh perspective on satire.

Brill shines in his most substantial film role yet, bringing depth and complexity to Doug's character that makes sense of his malevolent excesses. With its razor-sharp wit and outrageous humor, "The Musical" is an acquired favorite that will leave viewers divided but ultimately entertained.

🤔 I think the new movie "The Musical" sounds like a wild ride 🎬! The plot's got me intrigued, especially with the whole satirical take on cancel culture and social anxiety 💁‍♀️. Will Brill seems to bring a lot of depth to his character Doug, and that musical number with Enigma's song is already stuck in my head 🎵. Not sure if I'd want to watch it alone though 😅

I gotta say 🤣, this movie sounds like a wild ride! I love how it pokes fun at all the stuffy systems that try to control us - cancel culture, representation politics... it's like the film is saying "screw you, let's just have some laughs!" 😂 And Will Brill's performance as Doug is on point - he brings this lovable loser energy that makes me wanna root for him (despite all his petty antics). The musical numbers sound insane, I'd love to see Enigma's "Return to Innocence" come alive on screen 🎵. But at the same time, it's not without its flaws - sometimes the satire feels a bit too snappy and doesn't really explore anything too deep. Still, it sounds like a breath of fresh air in the comedy world, and I'm here for that 💪

🤣 what a total weirdo show! I love how the film leans into its protagonist's misanthropy like it's some kinda badge of honor 🛡️. Like, who needs likable characters when you can just be a miserable, rage-filled nerd? 🤪 But seriously, Will Brill's performance is top-notch – he totally embodies that awkward, lovable loser vibe 😂. And I'm low-key obsessed with the musical number featuring "Return to Innocence" – what a sick choice! 👏 Mateo Nossa's score is straight fire 🔥. Overall, this show is for anyone who enjoys laughing at people who can't even get their love lives together 🤦‍♂️. Am I right or am I right? 😜

I'm torn about this one 🤔. On the one hand, I love how it pokes fun at cancel culture and tokenism - those are issues we need more satire on 🙌. But on the other hand, I'm not sure if it's going too far in its ridicule of "sensitive" people... I mean, I get that Doug is a bit of a grump, but does he have to be so mean-spirited about it? 😒 Still, Will Brill brings some much-needed depth to the character and Mateo Nossa's score is fire 🔥. Overall, I'd say it's a wild ride that might not be for everyone, but if you're looking for something with an edge, this is definitely worth checking out 💁‍♀️

I'm not sure about this one... I mean, it's definitely got some bold moves 🤪, like tackling those super sensitive topics in a way that's more silly than serious. It feels like the film is more focused on being weird and funny rather than making any real commentary or change. But at the same time, Will Brill's performance as Doug really brings this character to life 💥, and the musical numbers are ridiculously catchy 🎵. I'm not sure if it's a masterpiece or just a bunch of absurd fun... but I do know it'll be interesting to see how people react to it 😂

omg u guys i just watched the new film "The Musical" with my bf and omg we are DYING from laughter like it's soooo ridiculous in a good way lol I love how the main character is just so extra and petty towards his boss it's like we've all been there right? 🤣 but what i loved most was how it pokes fun at cancel culture and stuff which is kinda ironic because sometimes u just wanna be able to laugh at things without getting cancelled 😂 anyway i also loved the music in it mateo nossa did an amazing job it's like the score is just so on point with the chaos of the film 🎵 and bradley rob lowe was just perfect as the antagonist lol idk if u guys would love it but i think its kinda genius?

I don’t usually comment but I gotta say, this movie is like a train wreck you can't look away from 🚂💥. It's all over the place with satire on cancel culture and social anxiety, but I think it's actually kinda brilliant in its unpredictability 🤯. Will Brill as Doug Leibovitz is like the human version of a broken record – you know he's gonna be annoying and miserable, but somehow endearing too 😒. The musical numbers are wild and the score is infectious 🎵. It's not for everyone, I get it, but if you're into that offbeat humor vibe, then "The Musical" is like a dark comedy goldmine 💃🏻😂.

I'm telling you, something fishy is going on with this movie... 🐟 I mean, think about it, a film that's all about mocking the system and being anti-establishment? Sounds like the government trying to send us a message, right? 🤔 And what's up with Will Brill's character, Doug Leibovitz? He's so whiny and bitter... sounds like someone who's been playing the victim for too long. 😒 And have you noticed how the film is just poking fun at all these "sensitive" topics like cancel culture and social anxiety? I think it's just trying to distract us from the real issues. 💁‍♀️
