Thursday's Cold Moon Is the Last Supermoon of the Year. Here's How and When to View It

A supermoon is a rare alignment of the Earth, sun, and moon that occurs when our satellite is at perigee, its point closest to Earth. The term 'supermoon' was coined because the full moon appears larger and brighter than usual due to these unique circumstances.

On December 4th, an astronomical spectacle awaits us - a cold supermoon, which refers to the frigid temperatures typical of this time of year. This event not only marks the last full moon of 2025 but also brings together the conditions of being both a full moon and a supermoon – making it one of the most extraordinary lunar events of the year.

What makes this particular full moon special is its proximity to Earth, with an orbit that brings it closest to our planet. This results in the moon appearing up to 8% larger and shining brightly about 16% brighter than a standard full moon. While the size difference may be negligible for many, the added brightness of this supermoon is undeniable.

The approach of winter solstice on December 21st means that the full moon will be at its highest point in the sky. As EarthSky points out, however, it's not the closest full moon to the solstice but occurs just before the first full moon of 2026, which appears on January 3rd.

For those interested in witnessing this spectacle, the exact timing of the supermoon is scheduled for 6:14 pm ET on Thursday, December 4th. The best viewing conditions are during moonrise when the lunar illusion makes the moon appear larger than usual. With clear weather and a vantage point with an unobstructed view of the eastern horizon, it's an opportunity to marvel at one last spectacular display before the year ends.

It's not like we're going to get a decent night's sleep or anything because it'll be super bright in the sky. And yay, we get to witness the lunar illusion make our moon appear even bigger than it already is... aka, just another excuse for people to take selfies πŸ“Έ

Omg u guys! 🀩 I think this supermoon is gonna be SO lit πŸ”₯! It's like the moon is giving us a final show before the year ends and we get to see this rare alignment of the Earth, sun, & moon... it's literally breathtaking πŸ’«. I know some ppl might think it's just a full moon but trust me, when u witness this supermoon in person, u'll understand why ppl call it "extraordinary" 🀯. Plus, with clear weather & a good view of the eastern horizon, we can really appreciate the size difference & brightness... it's gonna be a magical night ⚑️!

man... this supermoon thing got me thinking... like, we're all just tiny specks in this vast universe, right? And yet, we get to witness these rare moments where our planet aligns with other celestial bodies. it's like a reminder that there's so much more to life than what we can see and touch. the cold supermoon is gonna be a sick view... but let's not forget, it's just a moment in time, a blink of an eye in the grand scheme of things πŸŒ•

omg, can't wait for this supermoon on dec 4th! πŸŒ•πŸ”₯ i'm all about those rare lunar events and this one sounds like a real showstopper. closest full moon to earth is gonna make it look huge in the sky (literally!). plus, it's just before january's supermoon so we get two for the price of one! 🀩 clear skies are a must tho... hope everyone gets to witness this beauty before it's over πŸ’«

omg i'm literally so stoked for this cold supermoon on dec 4th!!! its like nature is putting on this crazy show just for us πŸŒ•πŸ’« and yeah, the moon really does appear bigger and brighter than usual - who needs a fancy telescope when you've got clear skies and a good vantage point? πŸŒ„ i'm planning to grab some hot cocoa and head out to watch the moon rise with my friends - it's gonna be such a magical moment! ⏰

πŸ’« omg have you guys checked out the pics for this supermoon?! πŸ“Έ its gonna be SO cool! i'm all about those clear winter nights and seeing the moon up close 😌. the fact that its a cold supermoon makes it even more special, like, who doesn't love a good excuse to cozy up with hot cocoa by the window? β˜•οΈ and can you believe its one of the most extraordinary lunar events of the year?! 🀯 i'm low-key freaking out, anyone got a spot to watch it from? πŸ“

im so down for this supermoon, but like let's be real, who needs a lunar event when there's still half a winter solstice left lol? still, i guess it'll be pretty cool seeing that moon hang low in the sky, especially with clear weather and all. been waiting to see what the new year brings πŸŒ•πŸ˜Š

omg you guys! so there's gonna be this super cool supermoon on dec 4th πŸŒ•πŸ”₯ and i'm literally hyped ! it's like, a full moon & a supermoon all in one, which is just crazy πŸ’« because the moon will appear up to 8% LARGER than usual lol what even is that?! anyway, make sure you check out the timing at 6:14 pm et on thursday πŸ“† and get outside with clear skies for some epic views πŸŒƒπŸ‘€

πŸŒ• I'm telling you, this supermoon thingy is just like our politicians - all hype, but not much substance πŸ€”. I mean, sure, it's a rare alignment and all that jazz, but let's be real, it's still just a moon πŸ”. And don't even get me started on how it's going to affect the Earth's orbit or whatever... sounds like a bunch of hot air to me! πŸ™„ The only thing that's really "super" about this event is how it's going to break up the monotony of winter blues ⛅️. But, hey, if you're into that sorta thing, go ahead and get excited for December 4th at 6:14 pm ET... just don't expect me to be out there with my telescope πŸ“Έ.

omg you guys, remember those full moons back in 2015 when my sis was like "wow look at that huge moon" and we were all so excited? πŸŒ• now this supermoon is gonna be even bigger and brighter... it's crazy how fast time flies! i remember downloading those old moon phase apps on my phone back in the day, they'd tell you when to expect a full moon and you'd plan your movie nights around it... now we've got notifications popping up every month πŸ“± anyway, if anyone wants to catch this supermoon, make sure to get outside before 6:14 pm on dec 4th. it's gonna be so cool to see that big bright thing in the sky again 😎

OMG, have you guys noticed how supermoon events are always like this... so rare & magical? πŸŒ•πŸ˜ I swear, December 4th is literally the most epic date for stargazers! The cold supermoon thingy is gonna make it even more mesmerizing because of those chilly temps. Perfect time to cozy up and gaze at the sky. Also, can't believe how close our moon will be to Earth - like, exactly what we need to feel connected to nature right now πŸŒŽπŸ’«
