Minneapolis Mayor Frey disputes DHS claims, saying ICE officer's actions were not self-defense.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fatally shot a woman in her car during operations in Minneapolis on Wednesday, claiming she was attempting to run over law enforcement officers with her vehicle. However, Minneapolis Mayor Frey strongly disputed these claims, stating that he saw video of the incident and believed the officer's actions were reckless and resulted in someone's death.
The victim was identified as a 37-year-old woman who was not driving her car towards the agent but rather was watching out for immigrant neighbors. Minneapolis police also stated that she was simply parked on the road, blocking it, when an ICE officer approached her on foot and two shots were fired, causing her vehicle to crash.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem described the incident as an "act of domestic terrorism," stating the ICE officers were attempting to push out their vehicle due to bad weather when they were attacked by a woman with her vehicle. However, Minneapolis Mayor Frey disagrees, saying he did not see anything that indicated she was the target of any law enforcement investigation or activity.
As many as 2,000 agents from ICE and Homeland Security Investigations could be deployed in the Minneapolis area for immigration enforcement and fraud investigations.
