Elgin mayor blasts federal agents’ actions against protesters: 'It discourages me. It disgusts me'

Elgin Mayor David Kaptain has issued a scathing rebuke of the actions of federal immigration agents who used excessive force against protesters outside an apartment complex. The use of tear gas, pepper spray, and flash-bang grenades "discourages" him and leaves him "disgusted".

Kaptain took to social media to express his outrage at the lack of respect shown by ICE agents to the community. He highlighted that Elgin was founded on its diversity and mutual respect between residents, values that were callously disregarded during the standoff.

The protests erupted when federal agents pursued a man into an apartment complex, with agents escorted from the building around 3 pm. The situation quickly escalated as tear gas and pepper spray were deployed against the crowd.

Kaptain has called on the community to come together in response to Saturday's events. He vowed that Elgin would "work its way through this problem" and continue to respect each other, even as the country grapples with immigration issues. The mayor emphasized that Elgin's residents have a history of coming together to overcome challenges and build a better city.

The incident has left many in the community feeling frustrated and disrespected. As one resident noted, the situation was "a travesty" that highlights the need for greater understanding and respect between law enforcement and immigrant communities.

man... it's like they're supposed to be helping people but instead they're just causing more drama 🤯... Elgin is all about embracing diversity and being a welcoming community, but what's happening now feels super opposite of that ❤️... the mayor said something right though, we need to come together as a community and support each other, rather than letting one bad incident tear us apart 💕... it's not like they're trying to be malicious or anything, but sometimes their actions can be super misguided 🤷‍♂️... anyway, I think it's awesome that the mayor is calling on everyone to work together, maybe we can find a way to resolve these issues peacefully 😊

OMG 🤯 what's goin on with these ICE agents tho?! Tear gas & pepper spray? That's straight up brutal! 🚫 I'm low-key glad Elgin Mayor David Kaptain is speakin out against this, 'cause it's about time someone stood up for the community. I mean, can you imagine if it was your fam or a friend who got caught in that mess? 🤕 It's all about respect & understanding, man. We gotta come together to make our cities safe & welcoming for everyone 🌎💖

man this is really disturbing 🤯...ice agents just showing up unannounced with all that heavy equipment and pepper spray? it's like they think they're above the law or something. and mayor kaptain is right, elgin was built on a foundation of community and respect, not fear and aggression. what's going on here is a huge disservice to people who are already feeling marginalized and vulnerable. we need to have a serious conversation about police training and accountability, as well as how law enforcement can better serve diverse communities 🤝

just saw this news about elgin mayor david kaptain talking about the protests outside an apartment complex 🤔.. i think both sides need to take a deep breath and try to understand where each other is coming from... like, we get that the protesters are upset, but can't they see that the agents just wanna do their job? maybe there's a way to find a middle ground here? like, community events or dialogue groups to help people connect and build trust with law enforcement 🤝.. it's not rocket science, right? just empathy and understanding 💡... elgin was founded on diversity and mutual respect, let's keep it that way 🌎

OMG, this is so not cool 🙄! I'm literally livid when I think about those federal agents using excessive force against protesters who were just trying to make their voices heard 👊. It's like, what even is the point of having a community come together if you're gonna disrupt it with all that noise and chaos?! 😱 I feel for Elgin Mayor David Kaptain, he's literally speaking truth to power and calling out the systemic issues that lead to situations like this 🙌.

I gotta say, though, I'm kinda inspired by his response - calling on the community to come together and show some love ❤️. It's all about unity and respect, you know? Like, we can disagree without being disagreeable 😐. And, honestly, Elgin's history of diversity and mutual respect is something we could all learn from 🌎.

It's time for law enforcement and immigration authorities to get their act together and understand that these communities are not just statistics or news headlines - they're human beings with feelings and stories ❤️. We need more empathy and less tear gas 😭!

OMG u guys 🤯 I'm literally livin' in 2025 rn & this is just WILD 🌪️ Elgin Mayor David Kaptain is straight up CALLING OUT ICE agents who used excessive force on protesters 🚨! Like, what even is the point of law enforcement if u just gonna gas people and spray pepper spray all over the place? 😷 It's so sad to see the community feeling disrespected like that. I feel for the ppl in Elgin, they've got a history of comin' together & buildin' a beautiful city 💕 but this is just a major bummer 🤕 we need to do better as a country, u know? 🌎 let's keep the vibes positive & work towards that mutual respect! 💖

I'm still trying to process what happened at that apartment complex 🤯... I mean, can you imagine having tear gas and pepper spray used on your own community? It's just not right 😡. As a resident of Elgin myself, it's heartbreaking to see the values we hold dear being trampled like that. Our city was founded on diversity and mutual respect, and it looks like those values are being tested right now 🤝.

I'm with Mayor Kaptain all the way on this one - we need to come together as a community to stand up for what's right 💪. It's time for us to take back our city and show those in power that we won't be silenced or disrespected 😤. We'll work through this problem, just like we always do 🌞. And to the residents of Elgin, I say - let's rise up together and make some noise 💥!

Man, this is getting crazy! 🤯 The way ICE agents handled themselves at that protest is straight up unacceptable. Using tear gas, pepper spray, and flash-bang grenades? That's not how you resolve a situation, fam! It just makes people more angry and scared.

I'm with Mayor Kaptain on this one - Elgin's all about being inclusive and respectful to everyone. You can't just come in here and start treating people like that. It's gonna take some serious community effort to rebuild trust and make things right.

And you know what really gets me? The fact that it happened outside an apartment complex, where people are trying to live their lives without all the drama. It's like, hello! Can't we all just get along? 😩 This incident is a major wake-up call for our country - we need to find a way to balance security with compassion and respect for everyone.

.. just got word from Elgin and it's like totally messed up 😩. Mayor David Kaptain is FREAKING OUT on social media about what happened outside an apartment complex - they used tear gas, pepper spray, and flash-bang grenades on protesters! Like, what even is that? 🤯 And the worst part is, Elgin was all about being a diverse community with mutual respect... now it feels like ICE agents just disregarded that whole vibe. I'm not surprised though - we've seen this kind of stuff happen so many times in the news lately 🤕. The mayor's calling on everyone to come together and figure out what went down, but honestly, it's hard to feel hopeful when things get so heated 🔥.

OMG, what's going on with ICE agents?! 🤯 They're literally discouraging people from speaking out against their actions? That's so not right! I'm all about the city of Elgin being a melting pot, where everyone gets along and respects each other. It's like, what happened to that vibe? 😐 The idea that they'd use tear gas and pepper spray on innocent protesters is just sickening. And can we talk about how the mayor is calling for unity in response to this? I'm 100% with him on that. We gotta come together as a community to show those ICE agents that their tactics won't be tolerated! 💪

🤯 Just saw this crazy news about the ICE agents using excessive force on protesters in Elgin! Like, what's going on? Tear gas, pepper spray, flash-bang grenades... so aggressive! 🚫 I'm all for keeping people safe, but not at the cost of respecting our communities. It's like, we're already divided enough with immigration issues - do we really need to escalate it further? 🤦‍♀️ Mayor David Kaptain is speaking truth, and I love that he's calling on the community to come together and rebuild their city's values. That's what I'm talking about! 💖 We gotta respect each other, no matter how different we are. Can't we all just get along? 🤝

omg i cant even believe what went down in elgin!!! 🤯 those ice agents totally lost it using tear gas and pepper spray on peaceful protesters... its so sad that the community is feeling discouraged and disrespected 😔 but im glad mayor david kaptain is speaking out against this brutality 💪 he's right, elgin was founded on diversity and respect, and we need to continue striving for that 🌎 what's even more concerning is that this kind of thing is happening all over the country... we need to come together as a community and support each other, especially those who are marginalized or targeted 😊 let's keep spreading love and positivity in these trying times 💕

omg, what's with these ICE agents tho? 🙄 like, can't they just chill at a protest without resorting to fancy tear gas and pepper spray? Elgin's diversity is literally the best part of that city, and it looks like those federal agents forgot that ASAP 💸. I mean, who does that? David Kaptain needs to take a deep breath, though - he can't change the whole country's immigration policies from his mayor spot 🤷‍♂️. still, kudos to him for calling out this major bummer and urging everyone in Elgin to come together... that's what community is all about 🌎
