6 deaths outside in NYC being investigated for links to the extreme cold

Six people have lost their lives outside in New York City during the extreme cold spell over the weekend. A 52-year-old man became one of them, found dead on a Queens street by police officers responding to a 911 call. His body was discovered at 96th Street and 34th Avenue in North Corona, Queens, where he had been left unconscious and unresponsive.

The death marks the sixth possible victim linked to the extreme cold that gripped the city, with five more people dying after being found outside on Saturday during one of the worst cold snaps New York has seen. The wind chill on both Saturday and Sunday plummeted well below freezing, putting those without shelter at risk.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, highlighting that the intense cold can be fatal for those who don't have access to warmth or shelter. He urged New Yorkers to report anyone in need of help by calling 311, which will now redirect calls to 911 during the "cold blue" emergency protocol. Social services workers are also checking on vulnerable residents.

The cause of death is still unknown and under investigation in all six cases. The medical examiner's office will determine the official causes of death once all the evidence is gathered.

This cold snap is just so sad πŸ€• I feel for those who can't get to a warm place, it's like they're stuck on the side lines watching everyone else be safe and cozy while they're out there freezing 😩 My kids were literally shivering in the car yesterday because we were waiting in line at the grocery store, and I was so worried about them 🀯 As a parent, you can't just leave your kids outside for hours when it's that cold, no matter how short the wait is. We're lucky to have warm homes and access to healthcare, but what about those who don't? It breaks my heart thinking about families having to go through this πŸ’”

I'm so sad about this πŸ€•. Those poor people must've been freezing their butts off out there on the streets. It's crazy how something as simple as cold weather can be life-threatening. I feel for the families of the victims and everyone who had to deal with it.

I'm thinking, what can we do better? Like, have more shelters or warming centers open 24/7? And why not just make 311 connect directly to 911 for emergencies like this? It's a no-brainer πŸ€”

Here's a simple flowchart of my thoughts:
```
+---------------+
Need help
(Call 311)
+---------------+
311
->
v v
+-------------------------------+
Redirect to 911
+-------------------------------+
```
We need to look out for each other, especially during extreme weather. Fingers crossed they can figure out what happened and make some changes to prevent this from happening again 🌟

OMG u guys 😱 this cold snap is getting crazy!! I was literally watching the news yesterday thinking "wow, 10 degree wind chill? that's harsh" but I didn't realize it would be THIS bad πŸ’€ like, what happened to people having umbrellas and hot drinks on the subway or something?!?! anyway, sad to hear about those 6 ppl who lost their lives... RIP πŸ™ can we pls just have a warm city for once? 🌑️ and btw, mayor mamdani's idea of reporting anyone in need is super thoughtful 🀝 gotta give it to him! πŸ’―

Ugh, this cold snap is getting crazy πŸ€•! Six people already lost their lives outside, that's just heartbreaking πŸ˜”. I'm living in NYC and I've been hearing about how bad it's been for those without homes or warm places to go. It's like they're literally being left out on the streets to freeze to death ❄️. We need more shelters, more services, and more help getting people to safety ASAP 🚨. And yeah, 311 redirecting calls to 911 is a great idea - we gotta make sure everyone knows how to get help when they need it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the medical examiner's office can figure out what went down in all these cases and give us some answers soon πŸ’‘

omg y'all cant even handle a lil cold β„οΈπŸ˜± 6 ppl gotta die from this ??! its not like they didnt see it comin', ppl been talkin bout dis for months now πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ news got a whole lotta hype but no action πŸ’Έ mayor's just makin promises, how many ppl really gonna step up 2 help ? πŸ€” 311 is still a hotline for tourist info, what makes u think its gonna do anythin new 4 the "cold blue" emergency protocol lol? 🚨

ugh this cold snap is really brutal 😩, i feel so bad for those 6 people who lost their lives outside... 52 years old man found dead on a street in queens, can u imagine? his body was just left there, unconscious and unresponsive 🀯. i know we have good social services in nyc, but it's still really heartbreaking to hear about ppl dying due to extreme cold. the mayor is trying to help by setting up an emergency protocol, which is a great start πŸ™. let's hope the 311 hotline gets more calls and ppl can get the help they need ASAP πŸ’•. we should all be thinking of those who don't have access to warmth or shelter right now ❀️.

oh man, this cold spell is straight up terrifying πŸ₯ΆπŸ˜¨ like, how can you be left outside for hours with no shelter and just... die? 😒 i'm so sorry to those families who lost loved ones. mayor mamdani's idea of setting up a 311 hotline that redirects to 911 during the "cold blue" emergency is a good one tho, it might make a difference if people can get help sooner 🀞 i wish more ppl would think about others when it gets cold outside, like, let's get each other outta harm's way or something πŸ’• we gotta take care of our neighbors!

Ugh, great, just what we need to make this week even more miserable - a bunch of poor souls losing their lives outside in the freezing temps . Like, can't we just have one warm day without someone going to sleep on the sidewalk and dying? I mean, I know it's not like it's exactly rocket science, but seriously, who needs access to heat when you've got 96th Street in North Corona?! πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ The city is always trying to find ways to help people, but sometimes I feel like they're just throwing us a bone. "Report anyone in need of help" sounds super convenient for the mayor's campaign trail, but let's be real, when it comes down to it, what does that even mean? πŸ™„

I'M SO SAD TO HEAR ABOUT THESE 6 PEOPLE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES OUTSIDE IN THE EXTREME COLD β„οΈπŸ˜±. IT'S JUST TERRIBLE THAT THEY WEREN'T AROUND SOMEONE WITH ACCESS TO WARMTH OR SHELTER TO HELP THEM THROUGH THE COLD SPELL πŸ’”. I FEEL FOR THE FAMILIES OF THE VICTIMS AND HOPES THAT THE CITY COMES OUT EVEN STRONGER TO HELP THOSE IN NEED 🚨πŸ’ͺ. MAYOR ZOHRAAN MAMDANI IS RIGHT ON POINT, WE SHOULD ALL BE TRYING TO LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER ESPECIALLY WHEN THE WEATHER GETS LIKE THIS β›ˆοΈ. I HOPE THE CITY'S SOCIAL SERVICES WORKERS ARE DOING EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO CHECK IN WITH VULNERABLE RESIDENTS 🌟.

Ugh I'm so sad about this πŸ˜”... Like, you see how they're saying it was an extreme cold spell? It's literally freezing out there! πŸ₯Ά I live in Queens and it was like -20 degrees on Saturday and Sunday, I couldn't even leave my house without bundled up like the Michelin Man 🀣. And people are dying outside, which is just crazy... My aunt knows someone who died during a cold snap a few years ago, it's still super messed up in her head πŸ˜•. The mayor is trying to do something good by calling 311 for help, but I feel like they should be doing more... Like, have more shelters and warming centers set up or something πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. Anyway, my heart goes out to the victims' families πŸ’”, and I hope whoever finds comfort in this news gets it 😊.

πŸ€• this is just heartbreaking, I mean 6 people lost their lives to extreme cold, it's just not right 🌫️ those without shelter or warmth are most at risk, it's like, we should be doing more to help them out, especially during emergencies like this ❄️ the city needs to step up its support for vulnerable residents, like providing more temporary shelters or warming centers. I'm all for the mayor's idea of reporting anyone in need of help, but it's not just about calling 311, we need actual resources on the ground 🚨

can't believe ppl r out there like that, freezing to death in their own neighbourhoods... it's not even that cold where i live but i can imagine how scary it must be when u don't got nowhere to go... and yeah, 311 should def be a thing, especially for emergencies like this 🚨πŸ₯Ά some ppl seem 2 think its no big deal but newsflash: hypothermia is real & can kill u in mins... btw, what's w/ the "cold blue" protocol? sounds like they're tryna cover up somethin or just makin it easy 4 ppl 2 report others who r strugglin πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

😱 This is just heartbreaking. Can't believe 6 ppl lost their lives out there. I was literally on my way to grab a coffee this morning when I saw people huddled together on the street, trying to stay warm... it's crazy how cold can get in NYC. 🀯 I feel so bad for that poor guy who got left alone and didn't make it. 311 is supposed to help ppl in need, but what's happening is that ppl are too scared to call cuz they're worried about being judged or whatever. We need to do better than this. Shelter programs should be more accessible ASAP! πŸ’”

I'm so sick of this cold snap already... ❄️‍♂️ I mean, come on, 6 people dead?! That's just crazy! What's going on with our city? We're one of the richest countries in the world and we can't even take care of ourselves during a freak cold spell. And now they're saying it's fatal for those who don't have access to warmth or shelter? Like, what kind of society are we living in?! πŸ˜” We need better solutions than just calling 311 and hoping someone shows up. Let's get some real action going on here! πŸ’‘

man that's super sad its crazy cold outside like people cant even stay safe whats goin on with homeless ppl in nyc? they deserve better shelters and stuff but at least mayor mamdani is tryna do somethin about it by reportin anyone in need of help to 311. thats a good start i guess, but we gotta see more concrete action from the city to help people out πŸ€•πŸ’”

awww man, this is super tragic πŸ€•... can't believe 6 ppl lost their lives in that cold snap ❄️. it's just crazy to think about how quick the situation can turn deadly when you don't have a warm place to go. like, we should all be thankful for that 'cold blue' emergency protocol tho πŸ™, at least we've got each other... and 311 is a great way to report anyone in need, hope ppl take advantage of it 😊. feels bad for the guy who was found dead on the Queens street tho, must've been so cold & alone πŸ˜”.

Man, it's like, we gotta do something about this crazy cold snap, you know? πŸ€• I mean, I've lived in NYC my whole life and never seen anything like this. People are literally freezing to death on our streets... it's just not right. The city's always talking about how great everything is here, but sometimes you gotta face the harsh reality. These poor guys who lost their lives, they didn't deserve that. And now there's a whole bunch of people out there in need of help and no one's doing anything about it... it's like we're all just sitting around twiddling our thumbs while people are freezing to death outside. We should be doing more, you know? Like, seriously, what's going on with social services and emergency protocols? Can't they do something to prevent this from happening in the future? It's just not cool, man...

Ugh, it's just so sad... I mean, I know we've had some bad winters before πŸ€•, but this one seems to be getting worse and worse. I remember when I was a kid, we'd get like, one or two really cold snaps a year, and the news would make a big deal about it for like, a week. Now it's just non-stop... 6 people have lost their lives? That's just heartbreaking πŸ˜”. And can you believe there's no clear cause of death yet? It's just so frustrating. I wish we had more resources to help people who are struggling to get by during the winter months 🀝.

Ugh, can't believe this cold snap is killing ppl πŸ€•πŸ˜© Like, what even is a wind chill? It's not like it's just gonna magically stop being that bad if you're outside for 5 mins. People need to get their act together and start looking out for each other πŸ‘₯🏻. I mean, I've been freezing my butt off in NYC this weekend too πŸŒ«οΈπŸ’£ but at least I had a hot cup of coffee to keep me going β˜•οΈ. Not everyone is as lucky, sadly πŸ˜”. Maybe the city should set up some emergency warming centers or something? That'd be a good starting point πŸ’‘. Just so frustrating that ppl are dying because they don't have access to basic necessities πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ.
