A look at how electric vehicles perform in extreme weather

Electric Vehicle Performance in Extreme Weather: A Game-Changer for the Environment and Your Wallet

As the world shifts towards a more sustainable future, electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming an increasingly popular choice for drivers looking to reduce their carbon footprint. But what happens when you put these eco-friendly cars through extreme weather conditions? Can they still deliver on their promises?

According to Cars.com Editor-in-Chief Jenni Newman, once she's driven an EV, she doesn't want to go back. "It's that great of a driving experience," she says. Newman's own vehicle has been tested in harsh Chicago winters, and she loves how easy it is to warm up her car quickly when plugged in.

However, EV manufacturers warn that extreme weather can impact the performance of the battery, not unlike traditional gas-powered vehicles. "How aggressive are you driving it?" asks Jerry O'Sullivan, central regional marketing manager at Kia. "Do you need the heat on? Is it windy?" The ideal range of an EV like the Kia EV6 is around 271 miles, but in extreme conditions, that number can drop to 225.

Despite these limitations, proponents of EVs say they're simpler machines than their gas counterparts, requiring less maintenance and saving owners money. "Just having a simpler vehicle means there's less need to go into the dealership all the time," Newman says. This reduced maintenance also translates to lower costs for drivers, making EVs an attractive option for those looking to cut their expenses.

But what about the bigger picture? As O'Sullivan notes, people are starting to pay attention as they get older and consider the carbon footprint of their actions. "What are we leaving behind for the next generation?" he asks. By choosing EVs, drivers can make a positive impact on the environment while also saving money on fuel costs.

In conclusion, electric vehicles may not perform flawlessly in extreme weather conditions, but they still offer many benefits that make them an attractive choice for drivers looking to reduce their carbon footprint and save money. As technology continues to evolve, it's likely that EVs will become even more efficient and reliable, making them a great option for those looking to drive into the future.

I was out with my bf yesterday and we had this crazy snowstorm in our area πŸŒ¨οΈπŸ˜‚ but anyway back to electric cars... I've been thinking of getting one because I'm trying to cut down on my carbon footprint and save money on gas πŸ’ΈπŸŒŽ and I have to say, it's kinda tempting to see all the pros about how they're just simpler machines and require less maintenance πŸ€“πŸ’ͺ but what really gets me is that if we choose EVs we can actually make a positive impact on the environment which is just amazing ❀️ and I'm all for that!

I'm all about giving electric vehicles a chance πŸš€πŸ’š. I mean, sure, they might not be perfect in extreme weather, but that's like saying a hot cup of coffee isn't awesome on a cold morning β˜•οΈ. EVs are still way better for the environment and your wallet than gas-guzzlers. Plus, think about all the maintenance costs you'll save not having to deal with oil changes and whatnot πŸ€‘. And let's be real, it's not like we're gonna be driving our cars until they literally fall apart πŸ’€. We can just keep innovating and making EVs better. I'm not saying it's a perfect solution, but for the little imperfections, I think the benefits totally outweigh them 😊.

tbh i'm so over people sayin evs r not practical just cuz they dont handle extreme weather πŸ™„ like who drives in blizzards every day? its not about the car it's about the owner's habits. and yeah, battery range might drop but thats still 46 miles more than gas cars on a long haul lol kia ev6 is a solid choice tho

πŸš—πŸ’¨ so I was thinking, if electric vehicles are gonna be a game-changer for the environment, shouldn't we also consider how they perform in extreme weather? Like, if you live in Chicago like Jenni Newman does, it's pretty harsh in the winters. But at the same time, EVs can warm up way faster than gas-powered cars, which is a big plus. I guess what really gets me is that manufacturers are saying we gotta be more careful when driving them in extreme weather, but still... isn't that kinda contradictory? We're trying to reduce our carbon footprint here, not make it harder for ourselves πŸ˜…. Anyway, I think EVs are definitely the way to go, even if they don't perform 100% flawlessly in every situation πŸŒŽπŸ’š

I gotta say, people think EVs are all rainbows and unicorns just because they're eco-friendly 🌈. Newsflash: no, they don't perform well in extreme weather like -40°C or something. I mean, Newman's experience in Chicago winters is cool and all, but it's not a universal truth that EVs will magically warm up your car in the freezing cold. And what about when you're driving in 50mph winds or -20°C temps? The ideal range of 271 miles just drops to 225? That's like me saying my favorite coffee shop is always perfect, and then you go there on a rainy Monday morning... it ain't gonna happen ☁️

OMG 🀯 I'm so down for EVs! They're like, totally game-changers for the environment πŸ’š and our wallets πŸ’Έ! I mean, who doesn't want to save cash on fuel costs? Money in my pocket πŸ€‘ is always a good thing. Plus, less maintenance means fewer trips to the dealership πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ, which is a total win-win. And let's be real, driving an EV can be so much fun 😎! The warm-up feature is literally life-changing on cold days ❄️. Sure, extreme weather might affect performance, but that's just part of the journey πŸš—. As long as we're making eco-friendly choices and reducing our carbon footprint, I'm all for it 🌟. Bring on the EVs and let's drive into a sustainable future πŸš€!

omg i cant believe how much more range these evs can have when its not freezing lol like 271 miles in normal conditions but only 225 when its -20 degree outside 🀣 think about all the ppl who gotta take public transport or drive gas guzzlers bc of weather and now they got evs as an option πŸš€ which would u rather save $$$ on fuel or have a cleaner conscience 😊

I'm so down on these new electric cars πŸš—πŸ’¨, especially when it comes to extreme weather conditions. I mean, sure, they might not be perfect, but at least you know you're doing your part for the planet 🌎. And can you believe how much money you'll save on gas? It's like, crazy! πŸ˜‚ My friend just got an EV and she's obsessed with it, she says it's way easier to keep warm in the winter than her old car. But, yeah, I guess you gotta be careful not to drive too aggressively or your range will drop like a shot ⏱️. Still, for me, it's all about going green and saving those dollars πŸ’Έ.

I'm thinking... EVs are gonna be super popular soon I guess. They're eco-friendly, which is awesome, but like, what about when it's freezing or super hot outside? My friend just got an EV and he said it's still pretty cool (pun intended). But, I get what the manufacturers are saying - battery performance can take a hit in extreme weather. Still, the pros say they're simpler machines, so maintenance is less of a problem, which saves you money πŸ’Έ. And, like, think about the environment... we should all be trying to reduce our carbon footprint, right? It's not perfect, but EVs are definitely a step in the right direction πŸš€.

omg yes!! electric vehicles are defo the way forward πŸš€πŸ’š i mean who needs all that hassle with gas when u can just plug n go? and like, dont get me wrong extreme weather might affect their range but isnt that what we want for our planet anyway? to make it a better place for future genz? πŸ’– let's not forget about the benjamins too - saving money on fuel costs is a total win! πŸ€‘ i can totes understand why ppl like Jenni love driving EVs, its defo an amazing experience 😊

I was at the beach last summer with my family and we rented an e-scooter πŸ›ΉπŸ’¨. It was so much fun! We were all excited to try it out but I was a bit nervous about the battery life πŸ€”. Turns out, it lasted way longer than expected and we got to ride around for hours without any issues πŸ˜…. Now, I'm thinking of getting an electric bike for my daily commute - that would be awesome! πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ Plus, think of all the money I'll save on fuel costs πŸ’Έ... it's a win-win situation!

EVs are like your aunt at family gatherings - they might not be perfect, but they're still pretty awesome πŸ˜‚πŸ”‹. And who needs perfection when you can save some cash on fuel costs? πŸ’ΈπŸ’Έ

I gotta say, I'm still not convinced about these electric vehicles πŸ€”. Yeah, they're good on paper, but have you thought about all the extra costs of charging? Like, what if you run out of juice in the middle of nowhere and can't find a charger for hours? And don't even get me started on the maintenance thing - just because it's simpler doesn't mean it's free from problems 🚫. And those extreme weather conditions? Yeah, that's just a recipe for disaster. I mean, who needs to drive around with their car freezing up or blowing hot air all over the place? Not me, that's for sure πŸ˜‚. Give me my gas-guzzler any day!

πŸš—πŸ’¨ EVs are still awesome even in crazy weather! I drove mine on a rainy day last weekend & it was smooth sailing πŸŒ‚οΈ. Don't believe the hype about batteries dying fast. Just chill, use AC less & you're good to go 😎

omg i cant believe they say evs need less maintenance lol its like, yeah no thanks πŸ™„ but seriously though ppl are finally starting to care about the environment and its awesome... i had my hyundai kona electric charged over the weekend in snow and it was so smooth 😎 didnt even lose much range dont get me wrong evs gotta do better tho when it comes to extreme temps

The environmental debate is heating up again πŸ’‘. It's clear that EVs are gaining traction, but what about the consequences of our 'eco-friendly' choices? Are we just delaying the inevitable, only to pass on the problem to our grandkids? πŸ€” Those Kia reps bring up a valid point – if we're relying solely on tech to save us from climate change, aren't we just putting our faith in innovation rather than systemic change?

I mean, 225 miles in extreme weather still beats driving a gas guzzler that's pumping out emissions like there's no tomorrow πŸš—πŸ’¨. And Newman makes a solid argument about reduced maintenance costs – it's all about the benjamins, folks! πŸ’Έ But let's not get too caught up in the individual benefits; what about the broader societal implications? Are EVs just a Band-Aid solution for our addiction to cars? πŸš—πŸ’‰ We need to think about the bigger picture and how these choices fit into the larger ecosystem.

😩 I mean, can you believe it? People are still debating whether electric vehicles are really better or not?! 🀯 Like, have you driven an EV in a harsh winter already?! It's like butter, smooth and warm in seconds! πŸ’¨ No more shivering your butt off waiting for the car to heat up. And don't even get me started on how nice it is to just plug it in and go... no more gas stations or fuel prices fluctuating all over the place. The pros are clear: EVs are where it's at, folks! πŸš—πŸ’š

idk about these extreme weather tests... they're just testing how well an ev can handle wind chill and stuff πŸ€”. like, who needs 271 miles of range when you gotta be able to drive without freezing your butt off? also, i'm still on the fence about evs - all that hype about saving money on fuel costs seems a bit sketchy to me... what's the actual cost of charging an ev vs just filling up a gas car? πŸ€‘
