Ukraine Fends Off Russian Assaults in Donetsk Region Despite Little Change on Front Lines
In a day marked by heavy shelling from Russian forces across various parts of the front line in eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian military reported minimal changes to its positions but successfully repelled over 45 enemy attacks.
According to the General Staff, the focus of the clashes was concentrated on Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Mariinka. The military acknowledged 17 air strikes and more than 20 strikes by multiple launch rocket systems, indicating a sustained effort from Russian forces to gain ground in the region.
The situation remains particularly dire for Ukraine's defenders in Bakhmut, where Russian forces have been attempting to take full control of the city. Ukrainian defense forces, however, managed to repel about 20 enemy attacks west of the city, according to the General Staff.
Meanwhile, Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander of Ukrainian Land Forces, claimed that Russian fighters and paratroopers had lost their myth of invincibility in Bakhmut, following discussions with soldiers and commanders. However, Syrskyi warned that "the enemy is weakening and trying to cover up its failures with new fakes about the capture of Bakhmut."
In other areas, fighting was intense, particularly northwest and west of Donetsk city. The General Staff reported that Ukrainian forces had repelled more than 20 assaults in these regions.
Despite these efforts, Russian forces have continued their months-long campaign to dislodge Ukrainian defenses in Avdiivka and Mariinka. Oleksii Dmytrashkivskyi, spokesperson for the military in the Donetsk area, acknowledged operational successes but noted that "the enemy is trying to attack our positions between Avdiivka and Marinka."
The situation remains complex, with losses suffered by both sides. Denis Pushilin, leader of the self-declared Donetsk People's Republic, claimed that Russian forces were still advancing in the Avdiivka direction, describing the situation as "extremely difficult for the enemy."
