Bodies of 17 people found in boat off of Greece’s Crete

At least 17 Migrants Found Dead in Deflated Boat Off Greek Island of Crete

The bodies of 17 migrants and asylum seekers have been discovered in a partially deflated boat off the Greek island of Crete, Greece's coastguard has confirmed. The victims were found on Saturday, about 26 nautical miles southwest of Crete.

According to officials, two survivors are in critical condition and have been hospitalized. Autopsies will be conducted as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the sinking of the boat.

The Greek coastguard said that all 17 victims were men. They had spotted the boat earlier by a Turkish cargo ship, which alerted authorities, who then rushed to the scene.

The rescue effort was aided by the European Union's border agency Frontex, which sent a boat, an aircraft, and a Super Puma helicopter to help in the rescue operation.

In July, Greece's conservative government had suspended asylum hearings for migrants, particularly targeting those arriving on Crete from Libya.

According to the United Nations refugee agency, over 16,770 people seeking asylum in the EU have arrived since the start of the year.

🤕 this is just a symptom of a bigger problem - Europe's migration crisis isn't going anywhere anytime soon 🌪️. These people are fleeing war, poverty, and persecution, and we're treating them like statistics instead of human beings 💔. We need to rethink our approach to asylum seekers, not just suspend hearings or rely on international aid (which can be slow and unreliable) 🚫. What's the real cost of suspending these hearings? Are we willing to sacrifice lives for the sake of a "tough" stance on immigration? 😱

🚢😨 just read about a boat off Crete with 17 dead migrants, all men... and only 2 survivors who are in critical condition 🤕 meanwhile europe is dealing with over 16k asylum seekers already this year it's getting super sad 💔 cant believe they even suspended asylum hearings in july think its gonna get worse before it gets better 🚫😞

Ugh, can't even browse the news without feeling like I'm drowning in a sea of suffering 🤕. 17 innocent lives lost at sea, and it's just another statistic on a platform that doesn't care about human stories 📰. I mean, what's the point of reading about this if there's no commentary or even a thread to discuss it? Just a bunch of info dumped on us like we're not even worthy of compassion 🤷‍♀️.

And have you seen the state of some of these comment sections? It's like everyone's just shouting over each other without really saying anything substantial 💬. I swear, if I have to scroll through one more thread about "both sides" or "not enough info", I'm going to lose it 😩. Can't we just have a respectful discussion for once? 🤞

just saw this news and it's bloody horrific... 17 innocent lives lost at sea 🤕. can't believe the EU is doing so little to prevent these tragedies 🚫. suspending asylum hearings won't help, just more people getting pushed into the unknown 🌊. what's going on with all these migrant boats? are we really expected to believe it's just a matter of chance they get lost at sea? 😒. and the stats from the UN refugee agency... 16,770 since January alone, that's not exactly helping my case for trusting any more tech 'solutions' to these problems 🤖.

😩 this is just getting outta hand... like what's gonna happen 2 these ppl? 🤯 i mean, 17 dead is crazy. u think its just a coincidence dat they suspde asylum hearings in july? 🙅‍♂️ it feels like the system is breakin down here. we need 2 talk about the root of this issue, not just jump on the bandwagon w/ the gov. 🤝 anywayz, my heart goes out 2 those survivors who made it thru... 😊

Ugh, just what I needed to see on a Sunday morning... another tragedy at sea 🤕. 17 lives lost and it's not even a big deal for the powers that be. "Oh, we'll suspend asylum hearings if there's some controversy"... meanwhile, people are literally dying out there 💀. And let's not forget, the EU is all like "oh, we're doing our part by sending a boat and an aircraft" 🚣‍♀️🛩️, but what about actual action? When do they ever take responsibility for these tragedies? It's just heartbreaking...

🚣‍♂️💔 "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." - Nelson Mandela These numbers are heartbreaking and it's like they're getting lost at sea... 😩 The system is clearly broken and we need to work together to fix it. We can't just keep talking about this issue, we need to take action 🤝🌎

😔 this is just devastating, another tragedy at sea... 17 lives lost is a number that hits you hard... it's like, what are we doing to prevent these tragedies? 🌊 and the fact that these guys were trying to reach safety, but ended up in such a horrific situation... Greece needs more support from the EU, and from other countries, we need to work together to help these people... the stats are mind-boggling, 16,770 people already arrived this year... it's like, we're not doing enough to process asylum claims, or provide safe passage... 🤯

ugh this is so heartbreaking 😩... like, what's going on with these boats? one minute they're sailing along, next they just sink and everyone dies... it's not fair to those families who are trying to make a new life for themselves 🤕. I know the EU has been saying we need to do more to control borders, but is that really worth sacrificing lives like this? 🚣‍♂️. And what's up with Greece suspending asylum hearings in July? it's just not solving anything, it's just pushing people into more danger 💔. we need to find a way to help these people without putting them in harm's way... 17 is too many 😢.

😱 this is like, totally heartbreaking what happened with that boat... 17 people lost their lives at sea it's just so sad... 🤕 i think we need to talk more about why these things are happening and how we can prevent them in the future... 🚣‍♀️ the EU has to step up its game on refugee crisis, it's not just a Greek problem, it's an European one... 🌎 what do you guys think? Shouldn't we be doing more to help those who are trying to escape war and persecution? 🤝

Ugh, this is just so heartbreaking 🤕... can't believe those poor guys had to go through that. The EU's gotta do something about these makeshift boats and the conditions they're living in. 17 lives lost is just devastating 🤯. Greece needs more help, not less with all these suspensions of asylum hearings. The system is already so broken, this just makes it worse 😔. I'm still holding out hope that Frontex and other EU agencies can do better to prevent these tragedies. At least the 2 survivors are getting the medical attention they need 🙏... let's keep fighting for those who didn't make it 🌟

Ugh this is just another heartbreaking disaster 🤕! How can they expect us to feel safe when we're already dealing with so many broken boats and tragedies like this? And Greece's decision to suspend asylum hearings is just crazy, it's not like it's going to stop people from coming here in search of a better life. We need to be helping these people, not turning them away 🚫. This is just so sad and tragic for the families who lost loved ones... can't we do better? 🤷‍♀️

😱 this is just heartbreaking what is happening to all these ppl trying to escape war and poverty I feel like we're just pushing the problem to another island or country instead of finding a real solution to address the root causes 🤔. 17 people lost their lives in one boat it's too much already can't we just have an open discussion on how to help these ppl safely? 🌊

😔 Can't believe this is still happening... 17 lives lost at sea just doing what they have to do for a chance at a better life. We need more efforts from our governments and NGOs to make these journeys safer, not just band-aid solutions. The fact that it's a Turkish cargo ship that spotted them first tells me we're missing the mark on international cooperation. We should be working together as humans, not just as separate countries. 🚣‍♂️💔 The system is broken and until we fix it, these tragedies will keep happening...

😱🌊 this is just getting outta control 🤯 like how can a boat even sink like that? was it a storm or what? and 17 people die... my heart is literally breaking for those poor souls who didn't make it back home 🌎 why do they always have to suffer on the middle of the sea? it's just so cruel 😭 and the fact that 2 people survived is like, what even is that supposed to be a consolation? a super puma helicopter comes in and saves 2 lives... meanwhile 15 others are gone 💔 i don't know what to say or do anymore these numbers keep piling up and it's just so heartbreaking 🤯 we need to do something about this before more people die at sea.

🤕 this is just so heartbreaking, can we talk about how we're supposed to address these situations? i mean, we know there's a lot of pressure on the migration systems but it feels like every time someone dies at sea, it's just another number and not really a person anymore. 💔 have we forgotten that these are human beings who were trying to find safety and a better life?

i'm worried about the way asylum hearings are being suspended in Greece right now... it feels like we're not taking the root of the problem seriously enough. is there a way to balance the need for security with the need to provide help to people who are genuinely seeking protection? 🤔

This is just heartbreaking 🤕😔... another tragedy at sea and innocent lives lost. The way this is happening on a regular basis is just too much for me. We need to take action now! 💪🌟 #MigrantRights #SeaRescue #StopTheTragedies

I mean, what's the point of suspending asylum hearings if we're not going to help these people? It's all about sending signals that no one is welcome here 🚫💔. The numbers are just staggering - 16,770 and counting... it's a crisis! 📈 #RefugeeCrisis #EuropeanUnion #Frontex

We need more transparency, more support, and more action from our leaders 💪🏽👥. We can't just sit back and watch this happen... we have to do something! 🌟💫 #BeTheChange #HumanityMatters

I just saw a video of those cute little penguins at the San Diego Zoo and I was thinking how they're so chill, you know? They just swim around all day and play with each other... anyway, back to this story... it's just so sad what happens to people trying to escape their homes. You'd think that by now we'd have better systems in place to help them, but nope. I mean, I'm not saying Greece is at fault or anything, but it seems like they're kinda pushing the migrants back out to sea... *sigh* And those 2 survivors are in critical condition 🤕🚑 what's the deal with that? Can't we just have one day without a tragedy at sea?

💔 just heard about this horrific news and it's like something straight out of a movie, you know? it's like that scene from "The Martian" where Matt Damon's character is stuck on Mars with limited supplies... it's like they were in a similar situation but instead of being stranded on an alien planet, they were at sea trying to escape war or persecution. 😱 the fact that 17 people lost their lives and two others are still fighting for survival is just heartbreaking. what's going on with the world right now? we need more heroes like those from "Captain Phillips" who risk their lives to save others 🙏
