Ospreys' Challenge Cup campaign came to a crushing end as they suffered a 31-26 defeat at the hands of Montpellier in Bridgend. The French side, who have won all four of their Challenge Cup games this season, proved too strong for the Welsh region, earning themselves top spot in the group stages.

The match was a nail-biter from start to finish, with Ospreys coming back from 21-7 down at halftime to trail 21-14. However, Montpellier's forwards ultimately told the story, as they scored two crucial tries and kicked four conversions to seal the win.

Replacement flanker Ross Moriarty played a key role in Ospreys' comeback, scoring two tries including the bonus-point effort that gave his team the lead for the first time. However, Hounkpatin's late try sealed the victory for Montpellier.

The defeat is a significant setback for Ospreys, who finished fourth in their pool behind Zebre and Connacht. The Welsh region will now face either Benetton or Ulster away in the last 16, depending on the Italian side's result at Lyon on Sunday.

Head coach Mark Jones made several changes to his starting lineup, with 13 personnel adjustments from the team that lost to Zebre. However, he was unable to prevent a second consecutive defeat for Ospreys.

The match also saw some interesting performances from individual players, including Wales and British & Irish Lions full-back Stuart Hogg, who kicked four conversions for Montpellier.

I don’t usually comment but... I feel bad for the Ospreys lads, they had that game in the bag and then just lost their momentum 🤦‍♂️. That comeback from 21-7 down was insane! Ross Moriarty was on fire, scoring those two crucial tries 💥. But in the end, Montpellier's forwards just took over, and it was a tough pill to swallow for Ospreys fans 😔. Still, props to Mark Jones for trying out some different lineups – you can't win 'em all 🤷‍♂️. And that Stuart Hogg performance? Unbelievable! Four conversions in a row is no easy feat ⚡️. Maybe the Welsh region will regroup and come back stronger next season 😊

I'm so gutted for the Ospreys 🤕! They had that one coming back to them after halftime, but just couldn't quite get over the line. Ross Moriarty was a total legend on the pitch, though - two tries is insane! 💥 Still can't believe they're out of the Challenge Cup now. Hope they bounce back strong for the next round 🤞
 
I feel bad for the Ospreys team 🤕. It's easy to get complacent when you're winning, but Montpellier showed that they were a force to be reckoned with from the start. Sometimes, you gotta take a step back and re-evaluate your strategy, like Ross Moriarty did out there on the pitch. He took charge and led his team back into the game! man this ospreys season has been all over the place 🤯 they had so much promise but just couldn't seem to get it together... i feel bad for the guys who gave it their all, though - 31-26 is a tough loss 💔 mark jones must be feeling the pressure now 😬 but on the bright side, stuart hogg was fire 🎯 can only imagine how proud he's gonna be of himself after that game! anyway, gotta give it up for montpellier too - they're on a roll 🔥 hope ospreys can regroup and come back stronger next season 💪

I think head coach Mark Jones made some tough decisions with his lineup changes, but you can't fault the guys for giving it their all 💥. Now they've got a tough one coming up against either Benetton or Ulster... fingers crossed they can turn it around 🤞. Montpellier was definitely the stronger team on the day, but I think Ospreys will bounce back from this loss 👍.

Ospreys were up by 7 points at halftime but then just fell apart and let the French team walk all over them. like what happened to their game plan? I swear Ross Moriarty's tries were the highlight of the whole match, but it wasn't enough.

and oh man Stuart Hogg is on fire this season!!! 🤩 four conversions in one match is insane! I'm just so frustrated for Ospreys, they've got such a talented squad and they're always getting knocked out of these big tournaments. it's like they just can't catch a break.

And what's up with the head coach's lineup changes? He makes like 13 personnel adjustments but can't win a game? It's all about execution and teamwork, Mark Jones needs to get his tactics right.

Stuart Hogg's performance was actually pretty interesting though. I mean, four conversions is no joke 🤓. Maybe he'll be the one who saves Ospreys' season with some magic performances in the last 16.
