China overturns death sentence of Canadian in sign of diplomatic thaw

China has suddenly lifted its death sentence for Canadian Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, a move that appears to signal a thawing of diplomatic relations between Ottawa and Beijing. The decision was announced by China's highest court on Friday, which overruled a 2019 retrial that had sentenced Schellenberg to death for his role in smuggling narcotics to Australia.

Schellenberg, who has maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal, will now face a new trial by the Liaoning high people's court. His lawyer, Zhang Dongshuo, revealed that he met with Schellenberg on Friday and described him as "relatively relaxed" despite the uncertainty surrounding his fate.

The development is seen as a significant shift in China's stance on Schellenberg's case, which had become increasingly contentious since his detention in 2014. The arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver in 2018 further strained relations between Canada and China, with Beijing detaining two Canadian citizens on espionage charges.

China-Canada ties were at an all-time low before Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to Beijing last month, where he sought to boost trade relations with the country. Carney has repeatedly stated that Ottawa needs a good relationship with Beijing to safeguard its economic future, particularly as the US imposes tariffs on Canadian goods.

While Global Affairs Canada declined to comment on whether diplomacy during Carney's visit influenced China's decision, Schellenberg's lawyer expressed optimism that his client would receive a favorable outcome. Zhang noted that Carney's visit had raised hopes of a more positive development in Schellenberg's case.

The release of Meng Wanzhou and fellow Canadian detainees Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig in September 2021 marked an important milestone in the easing of tensions between Ottawa and Beijing. The Chinese government has made overtures to relax its stance on Canadian citizens, including those facing death sentences for alleged crimes.

It remains to be seen how this decision will play out, but it is clear that China's sudden change of heart may signal a renewed willingness to engage with Canada on diplomatic and economic fronts.

just hope schellenberg gets a fair trial now lol... china seems to be having a bit of an identity crisis lol... like one day they're all about the death penalty, next thing you know they're being all relaxed and friendly πŸ€”... gotta keep an eye on this tho, don't wanna get too excited just yet πŸ˜…... hope carney's visit did help with the diplomatic relations, but at the same time, china's still got some major issues to work through πŸ’Έ... fingers crossed for schellenberg's new trial and a positive outcome 🀞

🀞 about this whole thing, i think china's trying to smooth things over w/ canada rn. they're like "hey, we messed up, let's just give this guy a second chance" πŸ™. it's all about the trade deals and whatnot - prime minister carney was in beijing last month trying to get china on board w/ canada, and now china's all like "alright, alright, we'll lift the death sentence". πŸ€‘ i'm not saying carney's all powerful or anything, but if he's got a magic touch, that's what it looks like 😏. anyway, schellenberg's lawyer is hyped about this new trial, and who can blame him? his client might actually get a fair shot now 🀞.

just saw the news about chinas decision to lift robert schellenbergs death sentence lol what a huge turnaround 🀯 i mean china was super tough on canada like forever but now its all chill 😎 hopefully this means we'll see more trade deals and less spy drama between the two nations πŸ€‘ zhangs optimism is totally justified btw - prime minister carneys visit to beijing was a great move πŸ™Œ fingers crossed schellenberg gets a good outcome πŸ‘

πŸ€” Just read about Robert Schellenberg and I gotta say, its crazy how China just dropped the death penalty thing for him! πŸ™Œ It seems like things are finally cooling down between Ottawa and Beijing after that Huawei fiasco in 2018. πŸ‘€ I mean, who wouldn't want to keep Canada happy with all those tariffs being imposed on US goods? πŸ’Έ Mark Carney's visit must've done some good, right? 😊 His gamble paid off! Now we'll just have to wait and see how Schellenberg's new trial plays out. Fingers crossed for the guy! 🀞

πŸ€” China lifting the death sentence for Robert Lloyd Schellenberg seems like a pretty big deal! Maybe they're trying to ease tensions between Ottawa and Beijing? πŸš£β€β™‚οΈ It's been a rough patch for Canadian-Chinese relations after Meng Wanzhou got arrested in 2018... πŸ‘€ Did Carney's visit to China last month have something to do with this sudden change of heart? 🀝

just hope schellenberg gets a fair shake now 🀞 his lawyer seems pretty optimistic about things, which is good. you know, i was thinking maybe canada-China ties will get better if they just focus on trade and stuff like that... no more spy games or whatever 😊. it's always good to see a thawing of relations between countries, especially when it comes to humans being treated fairly πŸ™. might be a sign of things to come, who knows?

πŸ€” This is just a PR stunt by China... I mean, why now? Did they really think keeping Schellenberg in death row for years would look good? πŸ™„ It's all about saving face. And what about Meng Wanzhou and the other Canadians who got released? Was that just a token gesture or is there some real change happening here? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ I'm not buying it. This could be a temporary fix to get Canada off their back before the next big incident... mark my words! πŸ˜’

😊 I'm reading about this crazy news about Robert Schellenberg and I gotta say...it's like a breath of fresh air, you know? 😌 After all those years, it seems like China is finally willing to listen and work things out with Canada. It's like they're flipping the page and saying "you know what? Maybe we don't have to be enemies all the time." 🀝

And let's be real, this comes at a really good time too. I mean, trade relations between Canada and China are super important for our economy, and it's awesome that PM Carney is trying to make things work. πŸ’Ό Plus, Schellenberg's lawyer seems pretty optimistic about his client's chances, which is great news! 🀞

It's like...we're all on this wild ride together, you know? Trying to navigate the complexities of international relations and whatnot. But sometimes, it feels like we get a little too caught up in the drama and forget that there's always hope for change. 😊

πŸ€” I'm not buying the whole 'diplo thaw' narrative here 🚫. We've got no concrete evidence that Carney's visit had any direct impact on Schellenberg's case, just some vague optimism from his lawyer πŸ‘€. And what about the other two Canadians who were detained for alleged espionage? Are we supposed to forget about them now too? πŸ™„ This sudden change of heart smells like a PR stunt to me, and I need to see some actual proof before I start getting excited about this "renewed willingness" business πŸ’Ό. Can someone point me in the direction of some credible sources that support this claim? πŸ”

πŸ€” I think this is a classic case of diplomacy winning over hardline policies. The fact that China has suddenly lifted its death sentence for Robert Schellenberg, despite previous convictions and retrials, shows that the Chinese government is willing to show flexibility when it comes to their relationships with other countries 🌎.

It's also interesting to see how this move can be seen as a response to Prime Minister Carney's recent visit to Beijing. Is China trying to send a message to Ottawa by showing restraint in their dealings? Or is this just a strategic move to improve relations and boost trade? Either way, it's clear that Canada has been able to use its diplomatic charm to get China to reconsider their stance on Schellenberg's case 🀝.

The question now is what's next for China-Canada relations. Will this be the start of a new era of cooperation, or just a one-time gesture? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure – Ottawa's got some serious bargaining power right now πŸ’ͺ.

πŸ€” Interesting that China just dropped the death penalty on Schellenberg. This new trial sounds shady tho. Did Carney's visit really put pressure on them? Maybe they're trying to get good vibes from us? 😏 Still, it's a big deal for Ottawa-Beijing relations. I hope Schellenberg gets a fair shake this time around. πŸ‘€

πŸ€” so china's all like "hey canada we're good now" after being super harsh for years...and it's only because some canadian PM visited beijing? 😏 i mean, mark carney's visit was actually pretty last month lolol what a coincidence πŸ™„ anyway, schellenberg's lawyer is hopeful he'll get off scot-free but let's not get our hopes up just yet. still a bit of a mystery what china's real motives are here πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

πŸ€” I'm kinda confused about this whole thing... like, I think China just decided to lift the death sentence for this Canadian guy Schellenberg? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ But at the same time, I'm not entirely sure that's a good idea... πŸ˜• Like, what if he's still guilty and they're just trying to save face or something? πŸ€”

I mean, I know China has been trying to improve relations with Canada lately, but you can never be too careful, right? πŸ’― And what about all the other Canadians who are still behind bars for espionage charges? 🚫 Shouldn't they get some kind of justice too?

But on the other hand... 🀝 like, maybe China is finally showing that it's willing to listen and work things out with Canada. That would be a major win for diplomacy and all that jazz! πŸ’¬ And who knows, maybe Schellenberg will get a fair trial and prove his innocence? 🀞

Ugh, my mind is all over the place on this one... πŸ˜‚ Can't decide if I'm for or against it...

This is kinda awesome I guess πŸ€”... I mean, who doesn't love a good underdog story? Robert Lloyd Schellenberg was stuck in the dark for years, facing death for something he claimed wasn't even his fault... it's wild that China is suddenly showing some mercy πŸ’‘. The timing of this development, with Prime Minister Carney visiting Beijing and all, does seem pretty suspicious πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ... but I guess you can't rule out the possibility that diplomacy actually worked in this case 😊. It's crazy to think about how far Canadian-Chinese relations have come since the Huawei drama broke out back in 2018... now it feels like they're starting fresh 🌱. Let's keep our fingers crossed for Schellenberg and hope he gets a fair shake πŸ’•.

🌱 I'm glad to hear the news about Robert Schellenberg! This feels like a super positive development for both Canada and China πŸ™. It's crazy how much impact diplomacy can have, right? 😊 Like, Carney's visit to Beijing was supposed to boost trade relations, but now it seems like this move is kinda related πŸ€”. I'm all about giving people second chances, and Schellenberg has been through so much already πŸ•ŠοΈ. It'll be interesting to see how his new trial plays out, but for now, let's just take a deep breath and enjoy the possibility of improved relations between our two nations πŸ˜ŒπŸ’š

πŸ€” China suddenly lifting the death sentence for Canadian Robert Lloyd Schellenberg? That's like me deciding to give up pizza πŸ• after 10 years of being addicted to it... unlikely, right? 🍴 Anyway, I think this move is a good sign that Beijing wants to improve relations with Ottawa. Carney's visit must've done some good πŸ€‘. Now let's see how Schellenberg's new trial goes down βš–οΈ. Fingers crossed he gets a fair deal and doesn't end up back in the slammer 😬. This could be the start of something positive for Canada-China ties... we'll just have to wait and see how it plays out 🀞

🀯 I'm so over these constant twists and turns in Schellenberg's case... it's like they're playing this whole thing out like some twisted game of chess πŸ€”. One minute he's dead, the next he's not - what even is that? πŸ™„ It makes me wanna pull my hair out just thinking about how many times I've had to check back for updates on his case 😩.

And now with Carney's visit and all this diplomatic haggling going on... it feels like we're dealing with some masterful puppet masters pulling the strings behind the scenes 🎭. Is China finally willing to swallow their pride and play nice with Canada, or is this just another clever move to get out of something? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Ugh, I don't know how much more of this I can handle... all these lives hanging in the balance like a game show prize πŸŽ‰. Schellenberg's lawyer sounds like he's got a real shot at getting his client off scot-free, but we still gotta wait and see what happens next... this is just too much drama for one person to handle πŸ’₯
