Conor Benn Now Within Touching Distance of World Title, Eyes Fight Against Ryan Garcia or Mario Barrios.
Conor Benn believes he's now in the perfect position to claim his long-sought world title, with the WBC welterweight championship currently held by Mario Barrios. A showdown between Benn and Barrios is imminent, as the British boxer will be pitted against either Ryan Garcia or Barrios' mandatory challenger following his Las Vegas bout on February 21.
Having moved down from middleweight to achieve his ambition, Benn expressed confidence that he's now "within touching distance" of becoming WBC world champion. His recent win over Chris Eubank Jr has provided a significant boost, and the Brit is eager to capitalize on his momentum.
"I said I'd be WBC champion, it was always the dream, so to be within touching distance and be made mandatory for the WBC world title, I'll be there ring side and I want the winner," Benn told Sky Sports. "No doubt it will be Garcia β Garcia vs Benn, I like the sound of that."
With fellow Brit Dalton Smith recently crowned as the new WBC super-lightweight champion, Benn believes he would draw a massive crowd to a UK venue if given home advantage. The prospect of another stadium fight has also piqued his interest.
"There's something great about what Dalton Smith did, so I'd love to do it in Las Vegas but I feel like I'll bring it here to the UK for the supporters," Benn stated. "Another stadium fight sounds good, doesn't it?"
Benn will have to wait and see who emerges victorious against Barrios before making his next move. Trainer Tony Sims, however, believes that Garcia would be a suitable opponent for Benn.
"We're hoping it's Ryan Garcia next. Obviously the fight with Barrios is on February 21 and Conor is mandatory," Sims revealed. "Provided Garcia comes through then Conor would be looking to fight him."
