I think this new direction from Detroit Opera is super interesting

. I mean, people might say they're oversimplifying the issues in Weill's opera by calling it a "Black American love story", but I don't see how that's a bad thing? It's like, what's wrong with focusing on love and sacrifice for once? And Still's piece is really powerful, it's like he's speaking straight to your soul

. The way they're using folk music in the opera is genius too, it's like they're bringing America into the opera house

.
I also get what they're saying about spectacle vs intimacy, I think it's time for opera to be more raw and real

. Not that it has to be all doom and gloom, but maybe just less pretend? Detroit Opera is taking a risk by focusing on marginalized voices, but if it pays off, it could be really good for the art form

.
I'm excited to see what else they come up with this season
